Thats Amaury’s News and Commentary: Wild card Kansas City Royals long time in the making 29 years host A’s

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

KANSAS CITY–The Oakland Athletics have been frequent flyers to the playoffs in recent years, although they still have not won a World Series since 1989 when they defeated the San Francisco Giants in a four game sweep in the Earthquake Series. This Tuesday in Kansas City, the A’s (#2 Wild Card team)will send lefty Jon Lester to the mound against James Shields, two #1 pitchers that were acquired by these teams, Lester recently, Shields this past off season.

26 of the Royals players on their roster today were not born in 1985. The Royals won the division by one game over the California Angels and then won the ALCS against the Toronto Blue Jays in seven games, winning the World Series against the St Louis Cardinals also in seven games.

This is the first postseason experience for the Kansas City Royals in 29 years. It was in 1985 during the famous I-70 World Series, between the two Missouri teams the Royals and St.Louis Cards. Pitcher Bret Saberhagen won two games during that series and was the Most Valuable Player. Some of the names on that Royals roster:

Pitcher Bud Black, today the manager of the San Diego Padres, pitcher Marc Gubicza, today television analyst for the LA Angels, George Brett, partner-owner of the Royals and then some of these names you might remember: Jim Sundberg, Frank White, Willie Wilson, Onix Concepción, Omar Moreno, Jorge Orta, Lonnie Smith, Daryl Motley, Hal McRae, Dan Quisinbery, and Denis Leonard, just to mention a few.

1985 was:

-The first year where all World Series games where held at night

-The last year where the Designated Hitter was not used in an American League park.

-Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees (today LA Dodgers Manager) was the American League MVP

-Bret Saberhagen was the World Series MVP

-Oakland A’s home attendance 1,334,599

-San Francisco Giants home attendance 818,697

-Oakland A’s total payroll $9,058,606

-San Francisco Giants total payroll $8,221,714

-Highest paid player – Mike Schmidt (Philadelphia) $2,095,967

-A gallon of gasoline was $1.20

-The medium price for a home nationwide was $27,000

-The top movies were: Comando, Rocky IV, and Back to the Future

-#1 Song in the US: “Careless Whispers” WHAM/George Michael

-Ronald Reagan,73, takes oath of office for the second-term as 40th President

One game series outlook: Power: A’s, Batting Average: KC makes more contact, but only 95 HR last in MLB. Speed: KC #1 in MLB with 153 stolen bases. Bullpen: KC.most powerful bullpen in baseball. The A’s had a September not to forget, but they made it with fumes in the tank. It is imposible to predict a ONE game elimination game. The KC fans are going to go crazy after 29 years without one single visit to the postseason, they could be standing all the way, that may play as the tenth man on the field for them.

Because of these factors, the two starting pitchers are key here. If KC has the lead after the sixth they could coast to a win. Kansas City has lots of speed, and I expect Manager Ned Yost to run on the A’s catcher(s)that is part of their offense, since they do not hit home runs. If the A’s score first, it could calm the crowd down and the A’s could roll, they need some of that good hitting they had in the first half. Reddick is the only guy hot these days, they need some other bat(s) to pick it up…

But, here is the thing, it is only ONE GAME, you can flip a coin. A bad hop, and error, a bad call by an umpire(judgement call), not the ones you can challenge?

Prediction: I am 100X100 positive that the team that scores the most runs, will advance and play the LA Angels in the Divisional Series, (best of fiive) starting this weekend at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

All the exciement of the game(live) can also be heard in Spanish on KIQI 1010AM Oakland/San José/San Francisco….KATD 990AM Sacramento/Stockton…KWRU 1300AM Fresno/Visalia—KEJY 790AM Eureka, the Oakland Athletics Spanish Radio Network, PDT 5PM this Tuesday the 30th of September.

NCAA Commentary: USC on right track with third win; FSU Winston throws for 365 yds

by Michelle Richardson

USC (3-1) 31-Oregon State (3-1) 10-USC has always been strong the Trojans throughout their history have had defenses that knew how to handle quarterbacks and the opposing lines. Oregon State not so much but it does compare to USC head coach Pete Sarkisian’s defense and their there for business to do work and get USC the ball.

That has always been the key in So Cal’s offensive production because the defense tires out the opposing offense or overpower the offensive line which happened against Oregon State on Saturday. That’s pretty much what the Trojans are doing right now. Their keeping their offense fresh and ready to go and they get the ball back for the quarterback and the quarterbacks do what they need to be doing.

Florida State (4-0) 56 vs. NC State (4-1) 41- The Seminoles had a tough game last week against Clemson where FSU quarterback Jameis Winston wasn’t allowed to play. That’s the one thing about this team, they aren’t as good as they were last year. They realized they lost some very tough weapons and they have to make up for that and their playing with more heart now than they played last year.

Winston got to come back Saturday and he threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns and missing one week will make you rest and think things over. He got to rest for two weeks because he came off the win at the Citadel on Sep 6th 37-12 and FSU had a bye the next week before they were to come home and play Clemson and previous to making his obscene remarks in the FSU student cafe.

Winston sat out the bye week and the Clemson game the following week, for Winston’s ignorant remarks he was out for two weeks of action and your only good for the last time you played. Winston played against a team Citadel and was almost taken out in the second half of that game. He really needs to get that ball in his hands and make things happen he certainly did against NC State on Saturday.

Fresno State (2-3) 35 vs. New Mexico State (1-3) 24- When Mexico State hired Bob Davie for head coach he’s not the right guy. He’s better than Mike Locksley the previous coach and the Lobos are playing a little better but he’s just not that guy. Fresno State went into New Mexico St and they handled their business. New Mexico they were turning over the ball for the Lobos it was just yuk.

Fresno State went in and did what they had to do and keep playing hard in order to make their goal for a bowl game. I’m at a loss of words to describe what that game was, UNM I think they can be good, if they can get the players they could be good. As far as the coaching is concerned the Lobos head coach Davie is really not the right guy for the job.

There has to be some candidate out there that can make it happen at UNM but right now it’s more of the same. That’s been going on for over a decade. The Lobos haven’t had any winning season since 2007 since the last time they went to a bowl game. The Lobos keep trying and they keep hoping, they have a lot of potential on that team and they have players who can get things going. It comes down to the leadership and Davie is not the right coach.

49ers and Raiders commentary: Eagles have all the right offensive weapons; Raiders adjusted to London time at the right time

by David Zizmor

SANTA CLARA–The match up between the San Francisco 49ers (1-2) and Philadelphia Eagles (3-0) is tough for the 49ers. You can expect an offensive game between the two teams. The Eagles are one of the best offenses in all of football right now. Their scoring at will and there’s not too many other teams that can do that. Its tough to be able to score whenever you need it.

You think of the Denver Broncos their one of the team’s that can do that, Philadelphia might be at that level they have so many weapons and Chip Kelly the Eagles head coach is one of the best offensive minds in all of football. It’s one of those situations where you have to be on guard every single play in case somthing big is happening.

The Eagles are team that can pull off the big offensive stunts, they have the weapons like running back LeSean McCoy in the backfield Darren Sproles the other running back. Wide reciever Jeremy Maclin has emerged one of the best receiving threats in the league. Wider reciever Jordan Matthews their rookie had a great game last week and it doesn’t hurt that he’s Jerry Rice’s cousin.

The Eagles are a team that have every kind of offenisvie weapon inclduing quarterback Nick Foles who the Raiders remember as the guy who threw seven touchdowns against them last season. Kelly has taken his up and down offense and really transformed this Eagles team into an offensive threat.

Oakland Raiders update: Anytime you have to travel to London and play a regular season game after already losing three hours playing on the east coast which the Oakland Raiders (0-3) did last week in New England the Oakland Raiders stayed on the east coast and flew to London during last week. No use flying back to Oakland and lose more hours as the team flew out of Boston.

This was a smart move on the Raiders part, it’s already a tough flight from the Bay Area to go from New England back to Oakland and then from Oakland to London is ridiculous. The Raiders were smart, the other thing that’s smart is they’ve been in London all week. They’ve had a full week to adjust to the jet lag and the time change.

In contrast the Miami Dolphins (1-2) reportedly didn’t get into London until Thursday night-Friday morning anybody who has been to Europe especially from the west coast knows it’s a six hour time change even from the east coast that’s a time tough change. It could be a little difficult when your going from east coast to west coast and that’s three hours.

It’s six hours from the east coast even from Miami, that time difference is a big deal and I wouldn’t be shocked if Miami had some trouble in the game just because their body clocks are off by that huge time difference. That’s one thing the Raiders have going in their favor, this London game the NFL has designed them to having a team in London sometime in the future, when that will happen is anybody’s guess.

Giants and A’s commentary: Weight of season rests on Mad Bum’s shoulders; A’s can’t lose anymore ground

by Michael Duca

San Francisco Giants update: The Giants are headed for the Wild Card playoffs and they’ll start there little adventure in Pittsburgh on Wednesday. The Giants have had trouble against the Pirates this season and that’s when the Pirates couldn’t win at home at PNC in Pittsburgh. Now their the best home team in the National League with a home record of 51-30 tied with the St.Louis Cardinals.

The Bucs are on a huge roll right now they’ve won 13 of their last 17 going into the playoffs. The Giants are going to Pittsburgh with half the line up that they had with no Angel Pagan for sure, no Micheal Morse, no Buster Posey maybe, Hector Sanchez, Matt Cain, and Brandon Belt are already gone for the season, Tim Lincecum has been used to set up and relieve there’s not too many weapons to go to war with for the Giants.

The Giants couldn’t ask for too much more than asking pitcher Madison Baumgarner to do what he has done all season and it’s nothing better than having your Willie McCovey Award winner and Cy Young contender start Wednesday’s wild card game. Nothing better than having Mad Bum going in a one game means everything situation. Unfortunately Baumgarner will be your best hitter in the line up on Wednesday.

There is only so much a pitcher can do for you in a scoreless tie, unfortunately baseball doesn’t go to a penalty kick. Mad Bum does remind you a little bit of former Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson who used to pitch and hit the lights out of the ball. Baumgarner with three home runs has the Giants franchise record for a pitcher in San Francisco that is.

Lincecum got his 100th win off the Padres on Friday night and is in his eighth season with the team. Baumgarner can achieve that and he is a very, very special young man. 26 years old who dropped the B word on the Dodgers Yesil Puig and had the approval of his peers which means more.

Oakland A’s update: For the A’s to get the home advantage that would mean the Kansas City Royals would have to lose twice and the A’s would have to win twice. Recent history doesn’t suggest that’s likely to happen. The A’s also have a minuscule shot at not making the playoffs at all, if they lose twice and Seattle the Angels twice which imminently possible because the Angels are going to rest as many people as they can for the playoffs.

Then everything can go far south as possible and the A’s could find themselves waking up on the wrong side of the border. The A’s Josh Reddick said “go Angels” after their game with the Texas Rangers. The Angels are playing in Seattle but the A’s need to worry about themselves and not worry about getting help from anybody else. If the A’s don’t get in by winning a couple of games their not going to get in.

Right now with the A’s pitching they’ve got to handle games they won 6-2 on Friday night and have to keep things rolling. Earlier they couldn’t score any runs to speak of to support their pitching. A’s pitcher Jeff Samardzija had a number of one run loses this year, I’m sure nothing would please him more in taking the mound in the bottom of the first inning with a three or four run lead.

Sonny Gray starts for Oakland on Sunday and it could be a crucial game for Gray and the A’s and the A’s have to be a little concerned with what they’ve seen in the second half. Pitches are up and I don’t know what it could be but it seems like Gray has struggled as he approaches 180 innings. Maybe Gray will have to go for some strengthing conditioning in the off sesaon to get what he had back again.

Kings downtown arena: Opponents say subsidy was more than reported figure

by Jerry Feitelberg

SACRAMENTO–Opponents against the subsidy for the Sacramento Kings new arena at Downtown Plaza are holding tough with their lawsuit claiming the City of Sacramento over subsidized their payment to help construction for the new arena for the Sacramento Kings. The lawsuit was filed because the city overpaid their claim of $255 million as the opponents filed a “secret subsidy” lawsuit.

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Timothy Frawley who overruled previous lawsuits by oppnents has kept most of this lawsuit intact although he had knocked out part of the suit. A December hearing was scheduled to hear further arguments in the case which was filed by three arena opponents Issac Gonzalez, James Cathcart, and Julian Camacho.

The opponents said the city overpaid the Kings in the tens of millions, the trio said that the secret subsidies are “illegal and wasteful” and said that the City Council was irresponsible and they represent “abuse and discretion.” The opponents also plan to challenge the bonds the city plans to use to help finance the public subsidy.

The city and Kings have already started construction at Downtown Plaza which started in August, a great portion of the plaza has been torn apart and small businesses have stated that they remained but have moved out of the plaza due to a lack of foot traffic. Yummy Yogart moved out ten days ago as the owner said that with a lack of foot traffic and overhead it wasn’t worth staying.

River City Brewery a long time tenant at the plaza said that the large space and lack of customers were killing business and that neither the Kings or the city has invited the 21 year old tenant to stay at the plaza once the arena gets up and running, “nobody has reached out and said to us, ‘we want you to stay we want you to be part of the arena’ Beth Ayers co-owner of River City who spoke to the Sacramento Bee.

Thats Amaury’s News and Commentary: Cuban Exodus; Cubans to keep an eye on arriving in the show

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

LOS ANGELES–Cuban players in baseball were the pioneers from Latin America. The very first professional baseball player from Latin America to play organized baseball in the United States was Esteban Bellán, between 1871 and 1873, with the Troy Haymakers of the New York Mutuals, for a total of 59 games at third base, shortstop and outfield.

Bellan played for the National Association, -later the National League, as we know it today. Bellán originally came to the United States to attend Fordham University in New York City, played there and then his next step was as a professional baseball player. Other Cubans that followed at the start of the 1900’s, one of the most famous was Adolfo Luque, who pitched for 20 years and in 1923 with the Cincinnati Reds won 27 lost 8 with a 1.93 earned run average. He would have been the first Hispanic to be awarded the Cy Young Award, but that award was not given (for the first time) until 1956 when Don Newcome won it with the Brooklyn Dodgers, he was 27-7 with a 3.06 earned run average.

Cuban players were in the United States since then, and until the US and Cuba (governments of John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Fidel Castro Ruz) broke relations. In December 1961, Castro made clear what most U.S. officials already believed. In a televised address on December 2, Castro declared, “I am a Marxist-Leninist and shall be one until the end of my life. The US could not tolerate a communist country just 90 miles away from its shores, so since then there have been no (nada) relations between the two countries. The diplomatic break on January 3, 1961 was the culmination of an increasingly acrimonious situation. This was at the height of the Cold War.

Moving the clock past a few decades, here we are today, and all-of-a-sudden Cuban players are “fashionable”again in the Major Leagues. Many students do not understand this history here in the United States(very little if any at all, is teached in our schools) and there is a belief that under Fidel Castro’s over half-century dictatorship Cuba has made great strides in the game of baseball.

But a good argument would be that because of it’s geographic proximity to the US and it’s very similar western culture and past history, Cuba was going to continue with its tradition of great baseball players with or without Castro. As a Cuban-born person, I can tell you we had previous dictators to Castro, and we still developed great baseball players.

The difference with Castro is that he followed the Soviet Communist policies, and the government sponsored all sports. Castro eliminated pro sports in the island, ALL sports, not only béisbol. Right after the US and Cuba broke diplomatic relations many Cuban players came into the US and today there is another Cuban exodus taking place, with Yasiel Puig, Yoenis Céspedes, Abreu, Ramírez, Viciedo Grantal, Aroldis Chapman and many many others. We have over 20 Cuban players today in the major leagues.

A lot of people constantly asked me: are there any new Cuban players in the horizon? So here it is.

According to my sources, very involved in this endeavor. The next Cubans to keep an eye on are outfielder Yasmany Tomas (Industriales), infielder Yoan Moncada (Cienfuegos), and second baseman Hector Olivera (Santiago). Olivera just left Cuba within the past few days, while the other two left a few months ago. Olivera had the best Cuban career of the three (by far), but he’ll be 30 next April. Moncada is the best pure prospect of the three (he’s only 19 or 20), while Tomas is a 24-year-old slugger who strikes out a lot.

I will have more in the future.

Sports Commentary: Robinson’s suspension was not just; McDonald still playing

by Bruce MacGowan

SAN FRANCISCO–49ers linebacker Ray McDonald’s situation has not been a huge distraction for the 49ers as far as we know. This is the first time this has happened and this is a problem that is an epidemic to the NFL today. This is a distraction leaguewide but individually the 49ers have enough problems of their own. If McDonald was like a Pro Bowler and was like his teammate Aldon Smith you’d hear alot more talk about it.

49ers broadcaster Ted Robinson is returning back to the booth after a two game suspension this Sunday after saying Baltimore Ravens Ray Rice’s wife Janay was “pathetic” for marrying Rice after he punched and knocked her out in an Atlantic City elevator. For Robinson it was not appropriate, but to put Robinson on the sidelines for two weeks to penalize him and not penalize Ray McDonald that was wrong and that was very hypocritical on the part of the 49ers.

It was not something that they should have done, it’s over and done with and thank goodness and Ted is a better man he’s moved past it and to him it’s not as big a deal as you think. In defense of Ted sometimes you get too comfortable on the air and sometimes you don’t always say the right thing. Having done radio myself for many years you have to be a little aware of the way you say something.

Robinson will be the first to tell you, it just kind of popped out of his mouth and sometimes we have these filters that our brains will take care of this. It’s early in the morning and he’s probably getting all revved up. It happened but then again to suspend a guy for that, Robinson didn’t use any profanity, he didn’t compromise anybody’s integrity, he didn’t say who’s at fault he just had an opinion.

It was the wrong thing to say but I can’t say Robinson should have been suspended for that and it’s hypocritical on the Niners part. They should have suspended McDonald because he’s the one who caused the problem in the first place not Robinson.

There has also been talk that head coach Jim Harbaugh is under consideration for a return to college coaching, Michigan was named as one school, but when it’s all said and done Harbaugh is not going to consider any other place other than the San Francisco 49ers. Harbaugh is going to stay with the 49ers and he can say he’s not going to have a better deal anywhere else.

He’s put together a great team on the field and today their still a very good team, the 49ers are going to look at Harbaugh and say “who are we going to get that’s any better?” This team was in wilderness when he came along, they had eight or nine years of mediocrity or worse. This guy over night turned the team into a champion. So it’s incumbent upon 49ers owner Jed York and coach Harbaugh to work this thing out.

As far as losing the locker room Harbaugh might have had a problem here and there, what coach doesn’t? Players will tell you when you have a winning situation it’s pretty rare that your going to have a lot disharmony. Maybe there’s been a little back biting and finger pointing but I’d be surprised if that continues and Harbaugh is smart enough to recognize it.

Bruce Magowan is a guest commentator this week on wwww.sportsradioservice.com and is heard on KGO Newtalk 810 San Francisco. The rest of this interview is below on soundcloud.

Warriors arena at Mission Bay: Dubs want to put a lid on toilet bowl arena blue print comparisons

by Jerry Feitelberg

SAN FRANCISCO–After releasing sketches of their latest design for the new arena at Mission Bay that looked like a drawing of a toilet with the seat cover down the Golden State Warriors are considering going back to the drawing board. The roof of the area would resemble the lid of a seat and the shape of the arena looked like a toilet.

Where the bracket of the toilet seat goes that would be where the Warriors would build a Bay Front Terrace that would be 135 feet high level to the rest of the seat or arena span at the same height at 135 feet high. There would be two office labs for UCSF those buildings would be taller than the arena at 160 feet each.

Warrior spokesman PJ Johnston said that the renderings were not the final design and that the Warriors were considering a “different look” after the out pouring of commentary of it’s porcelain like looks.

The drawing was meant to give an idea what the configurations would look like to simulate traffic conditions. Sounds like a good excuse to make it all look good but this ones by the sound of it is headed down the drain. Some major sports publications and sports networks namely ESPN and Sports Illustrated had some half jokingly comments about the design and the Warriors knew it was time to look at a new design.

Johnston said that once somthing like this gets on the internet it spread like wildfire, “I guess that’s the perils of the internet” but Johnston said that the design will change in the coming months. Traffic has been the main concern for the Warriors and the Mission Bay neighborhood. So the Warriors wanted some design to go with the streets and how it would work for traffic.

As far as transportation and traffic is concern there has been a question as to the Warriors new arena being a quagmire for traffic much like Levis Stadium in Santa Clara has been. The plan is to run light rail from Caltrain at Fourth and Townsend towards Mission Bay. The T line currently runs only one train to Mission Bay from downtown and only uses one car.

That will change once the arena is up and running and the City plans to run double T line cars out to the arena, under the current schedule the trains run anywhere from 15-30 minutes apart. This will have to change even on non game nights because the demand for transportation will be increased due to more medical professionals and students moving into the UCSF Mission Bay neighborhood and that’s nothing to flush at.

49ers report: For Ray McDonald not his week, house gets burglarized;calls for him to sit out until evidence is established

by David Zizmor

SANTA CLARA–Just when you thought things couldn’t get worse for the San Francisco 49ers amongst locker room tension, rumors of head coach Jim Harbaugh going back to coach college as soon as this season is over and namely at Michigan, and talk that Harbaugh has lost the team.

The 49ers linebacker Ray McDonald has had his shares of hits this week as his house was burglarized and former San Francisco 49er great Jerry Rice made a statement that McDonald needs sit out the games until evidence can be established of McDonald’s guilt or innocence regarding the August 31st domestic violence charges against him.

McDonald’s only statement on the charges that he gave bruises to his wife’s throat area was that everyone knows he’s a great guy and that he should be judged for his character. Jerry Rice said that the 49ers should wait no longer and take McDonald off the field, “I think I’m just like Steve Young I would have totally taken him off the field until it’s resolved. But they have decided to let him play and it’s just unfortunate. I feel that when you have something that’s weighing you down like that, because it’s a very important topic and it’s very sensitive, I just feel he should have been taken off the field.”

Burglarized home of Ray McDonald: As McDonald was in Arizona getting ready for the game against the Cardinals last Sunday McDonald’s home in San Jose was burglarized and reportedly had a number of items stolen on Saturday night. Neither McDonald or San Jose Police would disclose to the media what items were taken. Police said that no suspects have been arrested in the burglary.

This is the same home where the alleged domestic abuse took place where McDonald was to have attacked his girlfriend on the night of August 31st.

Thats Amaury’s News and Commentary: Former A’s pitcher Dave Stewart to be named General Manager of the Diamondbacks

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–Dave Stewart who became a star pitcher for the Oakland A’s of Tony LaRussa during their championship years is about to get a job with the Arizona Diamondbacks of the National League as their General Manager. Last night I ran into Dave Henderson, at the Oakland A’s game as he was in town with his good friend Stewart.

I asked Henderson what was he doing in town? (since he doesn’t comes often to the A’s games) he told me “it is close to playoff time and I wanted to see a game”, but I knew there was more than that, after I found out why Stewart was in Oakland.

Affectionately known as Stew, he is one of a kind. He always had a great baseball mind. He was also in the front office for the Toronto Blue Jays not very long ago. He is turning over his job as players agent to former A’s outfielder Dave Henderson. Among Stewart’s biggest clients is Matt Kemp the All-Star outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Yes, it is true that Tony LaRussa, now with the Diamondbacks is the guy that is bringing Stewart to Arizona for that GM position, but it is also true -I believe- Dave Stewart is very qualified to run a Major League Baseball team; and he deserves the opportunity. Some say that most people do not get what they deserve in life, and that might be true, but in Dave Stewart’s case it is about time he is afforded that opportunity, to run an organization that is ending a disastrous 2014 season.

A minority manager, that I will not mention here, once told me” “all that minority managers and General Managers wants is to get an interview, to have the opportunity”. It looks like Dave Stewart moment has arrived and we wish Stew all the very best in his new endeavor.

He is 57 years old, born and raised in Oakland, California, from 1987 to 1990, four years in a row he won 20 or more games and was the star of the Oakland Athletics on the mound for those Championships and World Series years.
