Cal Bears basketball commentary: Bears look like two different teams in win-loss games in 2K series

by Michael Duca

NEW YORK–It’s the tale of the two Cal teams that showed up, the one that beat the Syracuse Orange on Thursday in Brooklyn 73-59, then there was the game against Texas at Madison Square Garden on Friday night where the Bears were blown out 71-55.

The Bears might actually have an idea how to play against good teams and they exhibited that on Thursday against Syracuse. It’s way too early to make pronouncements about Cal head coach Cuonzo Martin’s playbooks success and to determine what he’s doing and what he’s doing differently. I will never be old enough to criticize former head coach Mike Montgomery as basketball coach.

The team is a year older there was a number of players that saw Syracuse last year and this year things just went well. The Bears converted four straight threes late in the first half it was the last four shots in the half that gave them 12 points in the end. Which could give them a 12 point lead at half time and they never looked back.

They did end up winning by 14 and it was a pretty even second half, what was interesting Cal went to the line 17 different times in that game on Thursday and ten of them was by Jordan Matthews and the other seven were by David Kravish. So they didn’t have a lot of inside stuff but they made pretty good use of what they had.

The fact that the Cal Bears made the top story on Thursday night that they beat Syracuse was not because the Bears are the top featured story nationally but because there was very little going on in college basketball. But we’ll see as Martin said “we’re not ranked, Syracuse is ranked 23rd and a 23 ranking this early in the season has a lot more to do with the name in the front of the uniform than the name on the back.

Syracuse might end up being a very good team and they might wind up where people shake their heads and say why did they get ranked 23rd? There’s no question that Texas on Friday who handled Cal well was a top ten team. Texas is a very, very good basketball team. They stopped the Bears in every direction with defense, blocking, rebounds, and on offense their shot was just dropping a lot more than it was for Cal.

That game that Cal lost on Friday told us a whole lot about this Cal squad with essentially one day to prepare after their win against Syracuse. The Texas basketball team has actually played a lot better than their football team in the last few years. It would have been awfully irritating for both teams from the Bay Area if they were to lose to Texas in a 24 hour period. Stanford doesn’t have to worry about that now they face Duke Saturday night.

Raiders commentary: What a relief to avoid notorious history of being winless team

by David Zizmor

ALAMEDA–It was great that the Oakland Raiders (1-10) finally got a win under their belts there was always a possibility of the team going winless but let’s be reasonable here in the history of professional football there have been only two teams who failed to win a game all season and that was the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 2008 Detroit Lions.

Its not easy to go winless, it’s not easy to win every game (hence the 1972 Miami Dolphins) and it’s not easy to lose every game it’s just difficult. I’m in fantasy football leagues and its hard to lose every game. In all the leagues I played fantasy football in and believe me I played a lot there has been one person whose gone winless.

That person has never lived it down we call him Goose for Goose Egg but never the less it’s not easy to do it wasn’t highly likely that the Raiders were going to pull it off. If you watched the Raiders the last few weeks they haven’t won but they’ve been in those games against San Diego and in Seattle.

The Raiders had their chances, it’s a little surprising against the Kansas City Chiefs (7-4), the Chiefs have been playing well they had won five straight before going into Oakland last Thursday night with some very impressive victories. The Chiefs have a very solid team and they have one of the best running backs in the league in Jamal Charles.

But you have to keep in mind that the Raiders always get up for he Chiefs with a long time rivalry the two teams really know each other really well. They don’t take each other lightly they play hard against each other and to contradict that a little bit the Chiefs might have been looking past the Raiders.

The Chiefs have a big game coming up against the Broncos in about a week and that means a lot for the division and the Chiefs were kind of expecting to come in and reel off a pretty easy victory. That wasn’t the case and they did make a game of it and the Chiefs were winning this game late until Raiders quarterback Derrick Carr got a winning pass off for a winning touchdown.

The Chiefs at the end of the game got halfway down the field with less than two minutes on the game clock before the Raiders were able to stop them on that final drive. This wasn’t exactly the Raiders dominating the Chiefs. It was a good win and some of the things you got to like as Carr came through when it counted.

Carr led the Raiders on some pretty good drives early on, they kind of stalled in the second half but towards the end when they needed that touchdown to get that winning margin he put them into scoring position and threw that big touchdown pass to James Jones. The defense held on and he obviously loved Latavius Murray who carried four times only because he got knocked out with a concussion. But boy those were four great carries for Murray.

49ers commentary: RGIII asked many questions at presser but says he’s focused on SF game

by David Zizmor

SANTA CLARA–Last week when Washington was playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Washington completely folded and had an awful game. This was a team that Washington could win against but dropped that game especially since Washington was hosting but got their heads handed to them 27-7. Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III had a few words to say after the game in the post game conference.

Griffin said he didn’t have a great game, he said his teammates needed to step up and some people viewed that of him throwing his teammates under the bus. Washington head coach Jay Gruden chimed in and called him out on it. Gruden said that Griffin needs to grow up, mature and be better as well and be a leader.

Gruden said Griffin needs to worry about Robert Griffin and not worry about the rest of the players. There’s been a whole bunch of back and forth going on amongst the media members about Gruden and Griffin and more criticism about Griffin than Gruden. Partly because Griffin’s performance has been lackluster.

We remember two seasons ago when RG3 was a rookie he just had an amazing first season he was kind of the toast of the NFL. When he came out he had this amazing running and throwing ability but what ended up happening was he was always kind of a reckless runner. He doesn’t protect himself very well.

He doesn’t protect himself like 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Griffin doesn’t have a good sense of when to slide, when to take the play out of bounds, when to get away from the hit. Griffin is not good at avoiding the big hits. When you watch Kaepernick he rarely takes a shot from the opposing defense.

As much as Kaepernick runs he doesn’t get popped, Griffin is the opposite he would run a lot and he would get hit hard. Then you saw him get knocked out of the at playoff game against Seattle a few years ago. Griffin never really fully recovered in that one even when he tried to come back last season.

This season Griffin came back, he definitely wasn’t running as much but he still got hurt for different reasons and he’s not entirely recovered and for that reason he’s not been able to fully come back. He doesn’t protect himself and his passing is not particularly good right now. He’s not a natural pocket passer and he didn’t stay in the pocket much when he was in college at Baylor.

Thats Amaury’s News and Commentary: Why Subban S.I. cover was blown out stateside by non hockey fans

by Ivan Markarov

SAN JOSE–The lack of demographic interest by hockey fans in the U.S. forced Sports Illustrated to drop it’s cover of the Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban. SI is going with a football cover instead of the Subban cover for the U.S. market. It’s not surprising and we’ve seen similar patterns that took place in the past where the Chicago Blackhawks would win the Stanley Cup and they would have a hockey magazine from SI for Chicago only and something else for the rest of the country.

This happens in most U.S. markets and hockey might not be here at the right time right now, it’s December and November and this is the sort of thing that just doesn’t get front page coverage in most non traditional hockey markets which also includes San Jose. For some hockey fans in the U.S. the hockey season doesn’t start until it’s the playoffs in April there’s no surprise there.

From a hockey fans prospective you want the cover to be presented and to be more visable here and you want it to be the talk of the town. It goes both ways he’s a hero now but we’ve all heard plenty of stories of hockey players who want to escape hockey obscurity here in the States especially in the smaller markets.

There’s plenty of attention in the bigger markets in the east coast where hockey is popular and hockey is a geographical sport here in the states there’s a large market out in the east coast out in New York, Boston, Detroit, and Philadelphia.

There’s also Minnesota where there’s a strong fan base but once you enter middle America where you enter Ohio where there’s a hockey team the Columbus Blue Jackets and some other states hockey is not big there. We can see it from games that are broadcast in Arizona and some of these less popular markets.

The arenas are not selling out and there is not as much interest there as there is in football, baseball and basketball. It’s popular in California and it’s an exception even in the Bay Area and in Anaheim the Sharks and Ducks they get some crowds often. These teams however don’t get talked about until it’s time for the playoffs.

Hockey in the states definitely takes a back seat to football, baseball and basketball with the exception of San Jose where hockey is very popular with the only pro team in Northern California here. Other than that it’s a very much geographical sport, SI has to sell magazines so they have to focus on other things.

NCAA Commentary: Look for Brown, Nastic, and Randle to light it up this year on the farm

by Jeremy Harness

PALO ALTO CA–Stanford Men’s (2-0) head coach Johnny Dawkins came up under Duke University head coach Mike Kryzewski and Dawkins has the same expectations that Kryzewski has for his team that he had at Duke. He’s been trying to build a winner at Stanford and some years have been more successful than others.

Even though they were able to make it to the lead eight where they eventually fell to Dayton, more often than not year after year they fell off into the middle of the pack and never really make any noise and at this point you have to wonder when this team is going to finally break out. Hopefully we’ve seen a little bit of that based on what we’ve seen from the NCAA Tournament.

When you look at it it was really a surprise even going into the basketball tournament they were still middle of the road so nothing had really changed from that point in time. They somehow got into the NCAA tournament and got hot. The Cardinal won their first two games of the season and their expected to win those games.

Anytime your a Pac 12 team your expected to take care of business with those mid major teams and actually lower than that. Their first semi-test will be this coming Friday in Brooklyn vs. UNLV. From that point the next real test after that is next month in December when they go to Texas on the 23rd.

At that time we’ll see what kind of team that the Cardinal really are, they don’t really have the strengthened schedule they’ve had in the past few years. They played UConn and Syracuse and those types of teams you don’t really see that other than the Texas game. The Cardinal went to the NCAA Tournament and made it to the second round.

Anytime you face a 2-0 team they have a winning streak going on there’s something that goes along with it. The feeling of winning the conference is great and this is a tournament that you have to be prepared for. Thankfully for Stanford they have enough returning players where they should be equipped to deal with that.

Some of the key Stanford players thus far are Stefan Nastic who is a classic post up center he has a lot of skills and has great passing skills, guard Chasson Randle can get really hot he’s a scoring machine, he can go for 20 and there was a game in the NCAA Pac 12 Tournament a couple years ago against Arizona State where he scored in the 37-40 point range. Anthony Brown is a much improved player at the guard-forward position, he’s got long arms and he makes a lot of noise on defense he a great player and he’s an up and comer.

Sac Kings commentary: Cousins no doubt the biggest reason for Kings success

by Jeff Hall

SACRAMENTO–The Kings were coming off two heartbreaking games on the road that they lost. There was the one game in Dallas which they blew a 24 point lead and then the next game against the Grizzlies where they had a 26 point lead and ended up losing that game as well. It was big for the Kings to come home after losing three straight on the road after that four game road trip.

They got back to Sleep Train Arena and responded in a good way and a lot of it has to do with their bench who are playing a lot better. The Kings DeMarcus Cousins got into foul trouble and that’s what the Kings are going to need their going to need a team effort. It can’t just be a one or two guy show.

Its not only been about Cousins and Rudy Gay who are two key players for the organization and that’s where a lot of the high scoring is coming from especially early in the game before Cousins gets into foul trouble. The Kings were able to hang with such teams in their last three losses with the likes of Oklahoma City, Dallas, and Memphis.

As long as the defense plays four quarters of basketball the Kings are confident they can beat any team in the NBA that’s how Mike Malone and the Kings feel right now. The Kings confidence is starting to build, their 6-4 and after ten games nobody would have believed the Kings would be performing this well.

It is a long season and we are talking right now about only ten games in but it’s 82 games for a whole season in the NBA it can really be tough and you have to be careful about being over confident especially early in the season. Despite the three game loses this last road trip the Kings are playing much better on the road in the NBA that’s very tough to do for any team.

The Kings are playing with confidence and a lot of that is coming from Cousins whose showing leadership like he’s never shown before. Malone talked about that Saturday night after the game and said that Cousins is becoming a real leader. He’s grown a lot this season and he’s growing a lot every game. He’s really a leader that the Kings didn’t have before.

The players look up to Cousins and he’s a big part of the Kings success and he’s been helpful with tips for the younger players. A good example of that is when the Kings were in the game to the very end against Memphis and they lost to them by one point. Malone and the players have alluded to Cousins being a big influence for leadership in making these games close.

Cal Bears basketball commentary: Martin setting up some great offensive plays for Cal squad

by Michael Duca

BERKELEY–Cal’s season opening night win was one for the books with a very healthy 34 point win over visiting Alcorn 91-57. Cal head coach Cunozo Martin was pleased with his offense and I’m sure that would be true with the Bears taking on Kennesaw State on Sunday at Haas Pavilion.

Also it should be noted that Martin and former Cal head coach Mike Montgomery who now works for the Pac 12 network have had many conversations off the record about coaching when Montgomery works Cal games for TV. Martin is in the process of learning about the players and who better to get a few tips from than Monty himself.

Not so much of those discussions were about the skill sets that they have but about the off the floor issues and some of the personalities that the players have during the course of a season. For the Cal offense on Friday coach Martin is very happy with the performance. The pre conference schedule is something that you have to figure out what you got so you can set your eight man rotation for the conference schedule.

Martin pretty much knows who his eight man rotation is already after practices it’s always good to see how guys work together on the floor in competition to see how guys have worked together independently in the off season and how they refine their games. These games are more important than they appear.

The smart basketball folks are there watching because they learn a lot and they learn a lot because they watch what’s coming down the road. Martin won his 125th career game which Montgomery has 677 career games. It’s a work in progress but its a pretty good start for Martin at the Cal basketball program.

Martin is young enough if he’s willing to coach long enough he can coach for 50 years he might be able to set some all time record. The Cal pre conference schedule is very heavily skewed towards home games. Which gives the local fans plenty of opportunity to come out and have good seats and see young teams develop.

We’ll see what happens in these early games which is hard to do as there will be very much breaking down of Cal or Kennesaw State for Sunday’s game. You’ve got coaches who are looking at their squads and looking at their players. They got freshman, they got red shirts on, who have not competed at the college level. Their giving them the opportunity to do that and want to see how much the game is faster paced.

The coaches want to see how well the players respond to those playbook situations, to see how they react out on the floor. Some of these kids even if their playing before a small college crowd and maybe the biggest crowd they’ve every played in front of. You got a lot of things for the kids to learn other than who does the back cut when somebody sets the screen.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: The Cuban invasion of the Y

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–This week José Abreu was named American League Rookie of the Year. The Chicago White Sox first baseman won the honors as he finished the season with a .317 average 36 home runs and 107 runs batted in, if the White Sox had won the Central Division, José Abreu would have been in contention to win the Most Valuable Player, and you can make an argument that even with his team finishing in fourth place, Abreu’s performance is among the very best in baseball.

Other Cuban-born players, like the extremely talented Yasiel Puig, with the big market Los Angeles Dodgers got much more publicity than José Abreu, there is little doubt that Abreu had the best season among the newly arrived talented crop of players born in the largest island of the Antilles. A lot of the young people in this country are “rediscovering Cuba”, like it is a new place for baseball, but that could not be anything further from the truth.

For Cuba, baseball is nothing new. The first ever Hispanic player to play professional baseball in the United States was Esteban Bellán.

Bellán was born in La Habana Cuba in 1850. Bellán and his brother were sent to the United States to study at Fordham, a Jesuit institution. In 1868, after his time at Fordham, Bellán played for the Unions of Morrisania, a New York team.

In 1869 Bellán joined the Troy Haymakers for whom he played third base until 1872. In 1871 the Haymakers joined the National Association, which became the National League in 1876. The Haymakers later became the New York Giants, now the San Francisco Giants. The Esteban Bellán story is part of history as well as what happened in Cuba when Fidel Castro took over power over 50 years ago and eradicated all professional sports in the country, after declaring his government a Marxist-Leninist system of government, and since has remained a communist dictatorship. Cubans have been playing baseball, even before Fidel Castro’s father was born.

Major League Baseball has a rich tradition of Hispanic players, and Cubans are back in force, as part of the mix in today’s game. Many of these Cuban players arriving escaped in man made crafts and left the country in the middle of the night.

Many of the new crop of Cuban players had to risk their lives in order to come and play in the United States. Previous to the current system in Cuba, players like Orestes “Minnie”Miñoso, Camilo Pascual, Leo Cárdenas, Zoilo Versalles, Pedro Ramos, Tony Taylor, Octavio”Cookie”Rojas, Frank”Panchón”Herrera, Julio Béquer, Mike Fornieles and many others played in Major League Baseball, but even with previous dictatorships in Cuba, they were allowed to travel in and out of the island.

That is not possible in today’s Cuba and that is why most of these Cuban players arriving now, have to defect while they are playing outside their country, or escape in small boats looking for that opportunity of playing here, in the Major Leagues. For any baseball player the ultimate goal is to play here in the best baseball league in the world. These two countries are separated geographically by 90 miles, but in ideology by 10,000 miles.

Dozens of Cubans have defected, and not all made it to the Major Leagues, but today Yoenis Céspedes, Yasiel Puig, José Abreu, José Fernández, Aroldis Chapman, and others are part of the names in box scores during the regular season which media and fans are very familiar.

The young Yasmani Tomas is part of the new breed, the 23 year old has been pursued by at least six different teams and could be the next signing. Maybe by the time you read this article he already has a contract. Also,a 19 year old that has been working out in Guatemala, by the name of Yoan Moncada,(considered a phenom), there are reports of at least 60 Major League scouts who went to Guatemala to see the kid.

The Los Angeles Angels recently signed 20 year old Cuban-born infielder Roberto Baldoquin to a record-breaking $8 million signing bonus. In 2004 the Angels signed Kendrys Morales, making that the last time the Angels dived into the Cuban-player market. By the way, this season Yoslan Herrera pitched for the Angels, he was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, the land of the great Tony Oliva. Cuban Rusney Castillo, who signed with the Boston Red Sox is now going to play for the Caguas team of the Puerto Rican Winter League.

Back in 1980 the Mariel Boat-lift brought a group of players, among them Bárbaro Garbey, who played third base for the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers, so Cubans have been leaving the island for decades now, but what is different now is this “steady stream” of players arriving, which is more like and invasion of the “Y”< A lot of these Cuban players have first names that begin with the letter "Y".

I have asked many of them,-more of that later- and they really do not know. What we do know is that until the collapse of the Soviet Union 25 years ago in 1989, the Soviet influence was big in Cuba, since the former communist super power was supporting Cuba to the tune of billions of dollars each year. It is possible that because of the failure of that system, that the Cuban government now "looks the other way" and is just about conceding that they cannot keep these talented players in Cuba.

Yuniesky Betancourt, was one of the first I remember(with the first name beginning with a Y) when he was at the Seattle Mariners Spring Training camp in Peoria, Arizona, before his first year,(2005) I asked him,if he knew why he and many of his compatriots had names that began with the letter Y. He really didn't know. Although this is not any kind of scientific study,I came to the conclusion, simply common sense, that it was the result of these players were born during or recently after the collapse of the Soviet Union. While many of these names are not Russian, they are a combination of Russian and Cuban cultures. But there is no doubt, the Y is now a very popular letter in the baseball dictionary.

Raiders commentary: Raiders need the full gamut of focus in order to win in San Diego this Sunday

by David Zizmor

ALAMEDA–When we last talked last week we were saying how the Oakland Raiders (0-9) played a couple of good games they performed pretty admirable in Seattle against the Seahawks. They kept the game pretty tight until late in the game. The Raiders were a little too happy with themselves over this game. They kind of took a morale victory away because they took the defending champions all 12 rounds maybe they lost but they looked good doing it.

The were competitive against a really good team, they felt too good about themselves and then Denver comes in and just destroys them 41-17 on November 9th. It was one of those things where the Raiders were full of themselves. The Raiders kind of let up a little bit and Denver is every bit as good as Seattle if not even better at this stage.

Let’s face it Denver was coming off a game they got walloped by the Patriots they wanted to prove something so they took it out on the Raiders. The Raiders shouldn’t be as complacent this week they played the San Diego Chargers (5-4) about a month ago in Oakland and kept it pretty close. This Sunday their in San Diego and the Chargers ended up winning that one and that was the last game the Chargers won and the Chargers suffered three tough loses in the row.

One of those loses includes a humiliating defeat to the Miami Dolphins 37-0 on November 2 and the Chargers are coming off a bye week. Their getting a little bit healthier their getting running back Ryan Matthews back and the Chargers are a team that still has playoff hopes. The Chargers are not going to sit back and lay down this Sunday.

The Chargers already know the Raiders aren’t going to lay down for them and given how they played in the last game against Denver. The Raiders can play them tough the Chargers aren’t going to take them for granted. The Raiders might have their hands full Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers always throws well against Oakland.

The fact of the matter is because the Raiders already played the Chargers tough their not going to have a close game as they did the last time. Part of the reason why is Tony Sparano the Raiders new head coach in his first game against the Chargers the Raiders were playing hard for him and it was a close finish but a loss 31-28 on October 12th.

The Chargers came in playing pretty well, they were a little bit full of themselves like the Raiders were last week against the Broncos. The Chargers aren’t going to do that now and they had two weeks to prepare for this game never a good sign for the Raiders as the Chargers had last Sunday off.
