NCAA basketball podcast with Morris Phillips: As Bears season winds down they’d like to wrap up last two games

by Morris Phillips

BERKELEY–The Cal Bears (17-12) are not going to make the NCAA Tournament this season but if they pull an upset on Thursday against the Arizona Wild Cats (26-3) at number seven. Arizona and the number one or number two seeded team in the west at least their in the conversation for their next two or three games after that in the NCAA Tournament.

The Bears scored only 34 points against Arizona when they played them in Berkeley, so you would not expect them to have much success but it’s always a nice opportunity that teams from other conferences can pull off a bid this late in the season and put get into the discussion.

If using David Kravish for example if he doesn’t have the season that he’s had Cal is an under .500 team without his contribution. They have no one else to turn to in terms of what Kravish offered in terms of playing in the post blocking shots and rebounding. Kravish should be a recognizable figure at this level.

Kravish literally has given the injuries and the loss of Richard Solomon great effort and he had to be there. Kravish turned out to be the player that the Bears wished for. Kravish is the leading shot blocker in the history of the program it’s pretty lofty stuff. Once again college athletes are especially resilient.

They are one of the Pac 12 teams that were right in the middle tied for seventh place and Cal head coach Cuonzo Martin is a quality coach. He’s known nationally, it’s the last part of the year in the college season and they have this young coach Martin. He has the knowledge and is trying to help mold his three recruits at Cal into a national top 25 team.

The Bears were all in for the game on Sunday in which they beat the Oregon State Beavers and they played with a great vigor after losing three straight games and that speaks to Martin and Cal after having the kind of season that they did. The chances of the Bears getting into post season play is less than 12 percent. If they were to win in Arizona and Arizona State that would take them to 19-12 and they would have their marquee victory to end the season.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb played in Cuba

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

All the 30 Major League teams are in full work-out mode during this 2015 Spring Training and within days of the first exhibition games will take place in Arizona and Florida. We remember the glorious history of Spring Training baseball. In 1942 the Brooklyn Dodgers held their training in Havana, Cuba, and with frequency the Cincinnati Reds during the 1940’s and 1950’s legendary players like Jackie Robinson visited Cuba during this time of the year.

The Detroit Tigers played a series of games against a Cuban national team; with the Detroit Tigers there was the great Ty Cobb. Babe Ruth played a series of games in Cuba as he was added to a New York Giants team under manager John McGraw, during the exhibition. Great Cuban black players like Cristóbal Torriente and Jesús Méndez played against McGraw’s stars and after one game John McGraw said: “I wish I could paint Méndez and Torriente white, I would take them with me to the Major Leagues”, while Babe Ruth said while in Cuba: “with Torriente and Méndez on my team, we will win the pennant in September”.

Cuba had teams in the US professional leagues, like the New York Cubans and the Cuban Stars, teams of the US Negro Leagues. Later regular teams in the International League like the Havana Cubans, and Cuban Sugar Kings. In 1959 the Cuban Sugar Kings(an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds)won the title in the International League.

Today, the possibility is there for Major League teams to return to Cuba and have their Spring Training there, according to Tony Clark, President of the Major League Players Association the US and Cuba are in negotiations to allow MLB teams to travel to Cuba in the future for Spring Training, once diplomatic relations are re-established between the two nations.

These two countries have traditions in baseball unlike any other. Three years after the first baseball game was played in Cuba(December 27,1874)between the Habana and Matanzas teams at Palmar del Junco Stadium, an international event was organized with a US team, who visited the Port of Matanzas on a ship, and on the 29th of December Cuba’s professional league was inaugurated in a game between Habana and Almendares.

These two teams had the greatest rivalry in Cuba and where instrumental in the developing of baseball in the country. Later on the Cuban Winter League had two more teams, Cienfuegos and Marianao, they would play every weekend. This reporter as a kid saw players in Cuba(play in that league)like Orestes(Minnie Miñoso), Brooks Robinson, Jim Bunning, Camilo Pascual,Bob Shaw, Cookie Rojas, and many others that also played here in the US big leagues.

Prior to the eradication of professionalism by the Cuban government in 1961, there was a great connection and brotherhood between Cuban and American players. Not only Cuban players wore the uniforms of many Major League teams, but also many American players would travel to Cuba to play in the Cuban Professional Winter League, considered then, as the best baseball professional league outside the Major Leagues.

Oakland-born Bill Werle(1920-2010)who was a pitcher for the Pirates,Cardinals and Red Sox, once told me: “I used to play in Cuba in the winter league, it was the best league after the majors, and everybody wanted to go and play there, because they also played the best”.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast and Commentary: White Sox star Minnie Minoso dead at 90; Minoso should have been a Hall of Famer

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The news of former Chicago White Sox great Minnie Minoso’s death is deeply felt by the White Sox organization, the Sox plan to have a dedication for Minoso 92, before their first pre season game which is scheduled this Wednesday March 4th against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cuban born Minoso in his first at bat with the White Sox hit a two run homer and became the first black man to play for the White Sox in that at bat in 1951.

The Cook County Coroner said that Minoso had passed away on Sunday morning at 1 AM at a filling station he reportedly was found in his car in the driver’s seat and had died of a heart attack due to clogged arteries this was determined after Minoso had a autopsy that found he died from a torn pulmonary artery. Minoso earlier Saturday evening had celebrated a friends birthday and had stopped off afterwards at the gas station. Minoso broke into the majors with the Cleveland Indians in 1949 but was later traded in a three man deal to the White Sox before the 1951 season. In 17 seasons he played 12 of them were with the Sox.

Minoso also hit for average with a .307 average, 135 homers, and 808 RBIs, in 1983 the White Sox retired Minoso’s number 9. The Sox placed a statue of Minoso outside of U.S. Cellular Field. There is one photo of Minoso talking to his statue during the dedication, Minoso was decked out in a fancy suit for the occasion. He was quite honored at the dedication of his statue.

Minoso was a right handed hitter and while it’s very rare for a player to get a first at bat home run when they make their first appearance for a club Minoso did it in his first at bat with the Sox in 1951 when he hit one for a two run dinger off New York Yankees righty pitcher Vic Raschi. Minoso was mostly a leftfielder and was known as the “Cuban Comet.”

Minoso played in five different decades and was one of two major leaguers who played in five decades. Minoso in 1976 at the age of 53 got his final big league hit. In 1980 at the age of 57 Minoso he came to bat twice going 0-2 in 1980 in his final big league appearance. White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf said of Minoso, “when I watch Minnie Minoso play, I thought I was looking at a Hall of Fame player. I never understood why Minnie was never elected.”

Minoso won three gold gloves and was elected to the MLB All-Star game nine times, he finished fourth four times as the top A.L. vote getter for an MVP award. Minoso also is ninth on baseball’s all time hit by pitch list he was hit 192 times. Former Cincinnati Reds first baseman and Cuban born player Tony Perez said that ever since he was a kid he wanted to be like Minoso, “Every young player in Cuba wanted to be like Minnie Minoso and I was one of them. The way he played the game, hard all the time, hard. He was very consistent playing the game. He tried to win every game. And if I want to be like somebody and I picked Minnie you have to be consistent.” said Perez

Stanford Cardinal basketball podcast: Coming off a two wins the Cardinal look to keep it going against Ducks on Sunday

by Matt Harrington

PALO ALTO–The Stanford Cardinal are on a huge winning streak right now they’ve won two straight and won seven of their last eight. They beat Cal for the first time in seven years at Berkeley and the Cardinal are running red hot right now. Their going to be a force down the stretch and you look at where the teams rank in terms of the statistics you have average points Oregon is number one 76.5, Stanford is number three at .73.6.

You look at Oregon on defense their 74.5 and Stanford is going to get their chances to score on Sunday night when they face Oregon, their two evenly matched teams. Their second and third in rebounds, second and third in three pointers, seventh and eighth in field goal percentage, their evenly matched teams all the way down to Oregon star player Joseph Young.

Young who just passed Chasson Randle in the scoring race for the Pac 12 leader. Young is averaging 19.9 points and Randle 19.4 it’s going to be an evenly matched game. The thing that the Cardinal have going is that they have a little of their swagger back this past week. Oregon is red hot their right above Stanford in the standings.

If the Ducks beat Stanford on Sunday their going to lock up a first round bye in the Pac 12 Tournament and third place in the standings, it’s a pivotal thing for both teams, it’s going to be an evenly matched game. It’s going to be a must watch game, it’s going to be a big game in terms of looking at the playoff picture in the Pac 12 and March Madness.

The depth that Oregon has scoring, it’s going to be a challenge for Stanford if Oregon has really staked a claim as one of the top teams in the Pac 12. Some people have ranked Arizona a little bit higher than Utah just based upon the recent string of games. Oregon has proven their a dominate team when they started looking at the 11-5 record.

So it’s going to be a struggle for Stanford to hold Oregon from scoring and Oregon is the high scoring team in the Pac 12. So you know that Oregon is going to put up points. The key for Stanford is to come back and to put up points of their own. Oregon will give you that chance to score. Stanford has to be productive don’t count on the players who are running red hot right now.

Golden State Warriors commentary & podcast: Cleveland was a tough hump but W’s are over it and ready for Boston

by David Zizmor

OAKLAND–This is one of the Golden State Warriors last big road trips of the entire season and they’ve been on the road for the entire month of February they’ve only had two home games in all of February and that’s going to change as they head into March they will have a lot more home games. This has been a long month and especially for guys like Steph Curry and Klay Thompson who both are playing at a high level and they didn’t get an All-Star break to recuperate.

Thompson and Curry went to the all star game and activities in New York and right after that had to fly all the way cross country to get back to California to play the first Warriors first game out of the break was at home which they won in very convincing fashion which was one of the best games of the season for the W’s. They had to immediately jump on the plane and go on this rough six game road trip against the eastern conference.

It’s not like your going against the Western Conference this road trip featured three of the best teams in the east Cleveland, Washington and Toronto. The W’s beat Toronto pretty easily 113-89 that game was done by the end of the third quarter and all because the Warriors had all the starters resting in the entire fourth quarter when they led Toronto by 20 points and the W’s had a 30 point lead in the third quarter.

The Warriors just destroyed Toronto and that was in the second game back to back, the previous night against Cleveland. There are a lot people who want to read into that game against Cleveland which the Warriors lost. The fact of the matter is LeBron James brought his A+ game on Thursday night. When LeBron brings his A+ game Cleveland or whatever team has LeBron almost always wins.

When LeBron is playing like that there is almost no way he will lose and that’s what the Warriors ran into on Thursday night. The Warriors beat Cleveland last time the two teams met at the end of January but LeBron was playing in that game. It was during the eight game break he took eight games off to rest up from an injury.

The Warriors looked good I that one, in this game they had a tough time and LeBron was great and the Warriors shots weren’t falling quite as well. That may not predict anything as far as the Warriors they will have their hands full if they face the Cavaliers again at any point this season which means the NBA Finals.

That’s Amaury’s News, Commentary & Podcast: Cactus league towns nearly sold out for hotel space fans coming in droves

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The Oakland A’s have a ambidextrous pitcher with Pat Venditte and the Giants are trying to stay a winner for this 2015 season. It’s going to be a great spring training, Barry Zito is back as a non-rostered invitee with the A’s Zito a former Cy Young Award winner over a decade ago. Everything looks good. Like I said in spring training 30 teams are in first place.

Every team is talking about “we have a shot” whether your the Astros, Phillies, A’s or one of the worst teams in the Majors spring is the best time of the year for baseball. Even if someone struck out multiple times everyone is happy to be at spring training, spring training is a great time to go down to Arizona.

I have been going to Arizona when there were only four or five teams it was the A’s, Cleveland, Brewers, Cubs, Giants, and Padres before the 1977 expansion. Now you have 15 teams in the Cactus League. You have half the teams in MLB that train in the Valley of the Sun as the former A’s announcer Bill King used to call it.

Things have changed a lot in Arizona for example in downtown Phoenix I remember going to the Pink Pony, it was a water hole for the media and guys like Billy Martin who did some interviews there. You could drive into Phoenix and I would fly out of a Bay Area into Phoenix and during those early days you could come into town and get a hotel room.

You can’t do that any more, if you want a decent place you had to make reservations several months in advance because everything is sold out. Right now there are thousands of people there planning their vacations around spring training, then you have the Giants who have won in recent years. There was a time when people could careless about the Giants, now the Giants sell out every game in Scottsdale.

I remember with the A’s the same thing, there was a good size amount of media and fans who would make the trip to Arizona, but now you have thousands and thousands of fans. This is good news for the Arizona economy as the Phoenix economy is thriving now and this is one of the best times of the year for baseball. Remember they had the Super Bowl in Phoenix at the first part of the year and has been a very good one with fans coming to Arizona spending their money.

Giants and A’s podcast with Michael Duca: A look at the Giants relievers; Ex-A’s Eric Chavez moves to broadcast booth

by Michael Duca

SCOTTSDALE AZ–In the last year Arizona made accessing to Surprise more accessible I guess when you win the American League title (Kansas City Royals) your ball park gets treated better. For the Chicago Cubs it’s whole different kettle of wax out there that’s an absolutely gorgeous stadium. The place looks like Wrigley Field and I got to go out there once last year and I was really impressed and I loved the exposed iron work.

They made the gates baseball green, it’s a really lovely location, it’s a lovely stadium, they did have the brickwall not of ivy but of vines, I don’t remember what kind of vines they are, but they don’t grow very well in 175 degree heat when you get down here in August. You can water all you want but there’s a limit.

Giant relievers to the rescue: Hunter Strickland comes off that unforgettable World Series where he almost started a brawl after yelling at Royals baserunner catcher Salvador Perez who actually took steps towards the mound and was intercepted by the plate umpire. Strickland comes cheap and he throws hard and was a strike thrower in the minor leagues.

If he’s able to tuck his postseason mishap away smile about it everytime he looks down at his World Championship ring and forget about it otherwise, he’ll be just fine. That’s what you look for in a relief pitcher is the ability to forget about the bad outing. They all happen every single one of them has an outing like those he just had the misfortune of having his on the biggest stage.

Former A’s third baseman Eric Chavez joins the A’s broadcast booth: Winner of six Gold Gloves former A’s third baseman Eric Chavez will be joining the Oakland A’s broadcast booth. The media will certainly enjoy having Chavez around the pressbox where he can share some of his insight and expertise into the game.

We will have the opportunity to sit down and chat with him and he’ll talk about third base play and how it’s done. One thing that I pride myself as an official scorer that I get to go to some of the outstanding fielders and ask them to give me tips on how the position should be played. Things to look for so I can do a better job at judging players who might misplay a ball.

Former Giant J.T. Snow taught me a whole lot about foot work around the bag at first base and who better to learn about playing shortstop than from former Giant shortstop Omar Vizquel. I picked his brains for all I could. I will do the same with Chavey. This is a guy who played that position at the highest possible level for a better part of a decade.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: NBA Warrior Glory days

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

OAKLAND–The Golden State Warriors are enjoying their best season ever. The Warriors best regular season was in 1975-76 when they finished 59-23, beat Detroit in the playoffs and lost to Phoenix in seven games. Their most successful season however, was the 1974-75, when they ended 48-34, but went on to win their first and only NBA championship surprising the world and taking care of the Washington Bullets, on a 4-0 sweep, with Rick Barry winning the MVP.

As I have written previously, I remember covering the Warriors as a writer for the bilingual El Mundo News of Oakland, in those years Spanish was not as prevalent as it is today, as the Golden State is as bilingual as any other state in the country. I even remember the days the Warriors played at the Cow Palace in Daly City, they were the San Francisco Warriors, prior to moving to their current arena at Oakland, and soon another page in the history of this franchise will be written, when they eventually move west to San Francisco. They will probably change their name to San Francisco Warriors again when they move to Mission Bay.

The Warriors have their best shot this season to win their first NBA title in 40 years, and their second in history. Today there is not really a dominant team in the NBA, unlike those sensational Chicago Bulls teams of the 1990’s. I had the privilege of calling Warriors games on Spanish radio during the Bulls dynasty. And that was a real dynasty, as they won six NBA titles in an eight season stretch.

Michael Jordan was the best player in the world, and he showed his talent and leadership winning the MVP with ease during the regular season and also during the finals multiple times. Michael Jordan internationalized basketball all over the world, like Pelé did for Fútbol. I Covered the great MJ as well as Edson Arantes Do Nacimento(Pelé)when he came to the Bay Area as ambassador of FIFA and representing Brazil, I interviewed the Babe Ruth of Soccer for Spanish television during the 1994 US World Cup, Pelé is truly a great person. But the winter of 2014-15 belongs to the Golden State Warriors, Giants had a parade to celebrate their third title, the A’s look World Series bound until a team by the name of Kansas City showed up, the 49ers were out of it early, so the Warriors are the biggest shinning sport star in the Bay Area firmament.

Hard to argue that the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls were not the best team ever. They did finished with the best record ever in an NBA season with 72-10, the Warriors current coach, Steve Kerr was part of those Jordan-Pippen-Rodman-Salley-Harper and company teams. I was fortunate to have work in the NBA during the “peak”years, with the commanding court presence
of:Jordan,Magic,Harper,Malone,Stockton,Mullin,Bird,Barkley and other great Hall of Fame players, many who formed the famous “Dream Team”that represented the US in the Olympic games of Barcelona, in 1992, when Michael Jordan was king and nobody was better. That is when the NBA really went ‘international’when marketing of the NBA super star jerseys were sold like hot cakes in Europe,Asia,Latinamerica, and of course here in the United States.

How fast do we forget? The current season has been so spectacular for the Warriors that many forget that last season(2013-14) the team finished with 51-31 record, but lost in the first round of the playoffs to the LA Clippers, and that was an exciting and very entertaining season, the last one by coach Mark Jackson, a very good coach.

The rest of the season will be very important for this team that is on his way to the postseason. Their biggest enemy will be themselves, free of injuries, they could go very deep into the playoffs, but like in baseball, in the NBA there are teams that get hot at the end of the season,at the right time, and those(not necessarily with the best win-lost record)are the ones that can upset everybody.

Recently Warriors point guard Stephen Curry was received by President Obama as the two posed for pictures in the Oval Office. Curry was not there on a basketball mission, although he would love to return to 1600 Pennsylavania Avenue in a few months to be welcome as champions of the NBA. Curry has a long life fight and campaign to prevent malaria.

As a super star, Stephen Curry is one Warrior that is living his dream, for these are the Glory Days for the Golden State Warriors. I know that every team in every sport league say they have the best fans ever. But here in the Bay Area, it is my experience, from covering all sports, that among the major sports, the most loyal and consistent fans have been the Warriors fans. From Al Attles days, to the Steve Kerr team today, Warriors fans have been there always supporting their team, they haven’t built a new facility, but Warrior’s fans generation after generation have lived and died with their W’S.

Sacramento Kings podcast: Kings set to take on one of the NBA’s best the Memphis Grizzlies Wednesday night

by Jeff Hall

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings are going to face one of the best teams in the NBA the Memphis Grizzlies and their a team that’s loaded with talent. There will be no hand outs from the three teams that are coming in for the Kings next three home games. The Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs and Portland Trailblazers. It’s going to be a tough home series but the Kings have a new head coach coaching his third game with the team George Karl.

The Kings have used him for a couple of games so far one at home when they beat the Boston Celtics and the next night which they lost in Los Angeles against the Clippers. Their in a transition state right now and the team is trying to learn how to play basketball for Karl. It’s a different style of basketball.

That first win was very exciting for Karl and the crowd at Sleep Train Arena just went nuts when they announced Karl to the fans and it was fascinating the way the crowd reacted to him. So he’s welcomed to Sacramento, there not too many expectations because nobody knows what’s going on with this team.

There’s hopes that Karl will be able to turn this team around, is he going to turn the team around quickly? Probably not it’s going to take him a season in a half and that’s the reason why the Kings wanted to bring him aboard. Before the transition of Karl the Kings were getting offers from other NBA teams about DeMarcus Cousins but the Kings didn’t panic and held onto him.’

The Kings can’t be losing Cousins he’s the best player they have on the team and you hate to lose a guy like that. The Kings have seen the importance of having him on the team. When Cousins have the viral meningitis it’s not the same. It’s obvious when he was out he was not the same Cousins is an important part of this team. Cousins has a lot of respect for Karl which is good and that’s what you have to see how the players are going to react to the new coach.

The Kings lost a tough game under Karl in L.A. against the Clippers and you have to remember that the Kings are trying to plan their new strategy now. Cousins after that game felt the team was fatigued because their running a fast break that they’ve never run before. It’s starting to wear the team down and he thinks that had an impact on them against the Clippers.
