San Jose Sharks Podcast with Ivan Makarov: 16 games left and a 7 % chance to make the playoffs for the Sharks can they make it?

by Ivan Makarov

SAN JOSE–The San Jose Sharks needless to say have been very inconsistent and every point matters now for the Sharks their outside of the playoffs their looking at a five point deficit right now between them and the Calgary Flames for the third spot in the playoffs a six point differential from the wild card. Things are not looking good for the Sharks, their playing for their lives right now, their battling, their trying and the Sharks in the first period against the Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t look so hot although they took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission when they started taking shots on the net.

Everything matters now the Sharks are really playing for their season now and everything really matters. The Sharks going into Monday night’s game had lost nine of their last ten games at home and that’s one of the biggest reasons why their outside of the playoffs in 10th place in the Western Conference. They’ve had a very strange season this year because they started a lot of their games on the road.

The Sharks played a lot of games at home later and now their spending a lot of their season on the road towards the end of March with a seven game road trip. It could be a good thing for them because they play much better and positive on the road when the pressure is not on them. It really is those home games not being able to win at home against good teams and bad teams it’s really effecting them especially in the standings and they might miss the playoffs as a result of that.

When you look at veterans on this team like Joe Pavelski, Joe Thornton, and Patrick Marleau to name a few you have to look at the leadership of the team. When head coach Todd McClellan is asked he never points out at any specific players in interviews but he always says its the leadership and that everybody has to step up.

So far the Sharks have been really inconsistent, Thornton is the only one that’s been showing up night in and night out and has been a producer but players like Pavelski and Logan Couture their going through a dry spell. You have to look at them and you have to look at Marleau and his production and he’s been very inconsistent this season it’s really hurting them.

The one thing the Sharks have to focus on now is they have to win every night and with the three point games and a lot of teams playing between each other they really have to make it count. With every point loss it will add more and more concern for McClellan and he has to be more and more concerned if the Sharks can’t finish these games.

That’s Amaury’s Podcast, News, and Commentary: Giants redoing line up Aoki leadoff & Pagan in three hole; A’s scrambling at second and in right

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The San Francisco Giants will be taking a look at leftfielder Nori Aoki in the leadoff spot as Angel Pagan moves down to the third spot in the line up as it stands now. Catcher Buster Posey looking forward to his usual clean up spot but the team is without Hunter Pence who can pile up the numbers offensively. Pence is expected back in six to eight weeks because of the broken left arm.

The Giants right now don’t have a lot of power outside of Pence and Posey and at first base no one knows who it’s really going to be as the Giants are looking at Travis Ishiskawa and Brandon Belt. After Pence broke the arm there is still talk some four days after Pence broke the arm that it’s a big blow for them.

It’s hopeful for Giants manager Bruce Bochy that Aoki can do the job in left and in the leadoff spot. Pence was very optimistic and he wants to return a little bit earlier but they all say that. That’s Pence talking they have to wait until his bones heal the fracture in the left forearm is not an easy thing for a ball player.

It’s going to take awhile for the Giants to see how this line up works out the first part of the season. When General Manager Brian Sabean acquired Aoki it’s very important that Aoki pays off with the bat and glove as they don’t have Pence in the first two months of the season. With Giants pitcher Madison Baumgarner pitchers like him throw so hard they have so much stuff and they always get injuries. Mad Bum is aiming to stay healthy and cash in again this season.

Oakland A’s camp in Mesa: The A’s have delegated without no competition Coco Crisp as the opening day outfielder if he stays healthy. Sam Fuld and Craig Gentry were competing for the left field spot but both have been told that the centerfield job is up for grabs as Crisp is expected to start there by opening night.

Last season Yoenis Cespedes who made his rounds in the American League after leaving Oakland for Boston and now with Detroit had a lock on left field as Crisp was starting in centerfield. Crisp is considered the better centerfielder than Cespedes at the time and now he’s looking at starting left. Cespedes at the time didn’t want anything to do with centerfield and insisted on playing exclusively left which was one of the reasons the A’s forced a trade for Cespedes to Boston

Crisp playing centerfield has a lot of ground to cover and the last few years if you check the numbers he hasn’t played more than 110-120 games. If they A’s are going to make any run this year they need a healthy Crisp and when he plays centerfield you have more opportunities to get hurt and cover more ground than in the corners in right and left so moving him to left that was a good decision by A’s manager Bob Melvin.

NCAA basketball podcast with Michelle Richardson: Boeheim not going anywhere but rough going getting started over violations

by Michelle Richardson

This is big time college athletics the program at Syracuse University will be impacted by the accusations of athletes accepting gifts and booster donations and head coach Jim Boheim is at the center of the conversation. The University is really disappointed in Boeheim and also the school had a huge colossal loss to NC State on Saturday in the middle of the storm of this high profile scandal.

Boeheim didn’t address the media after the game on Saturday and the assistant coach was left to meet with the media after the game when really Boeheim was the one who should have fielded questions right after the game. Boeheim was simply not there to answer questions and it’s good bet that was because he didn’t want to explain any particulars regarding the scandal.

I would be hoping that the university council told Boeheim that it was not in the school’s or Boeheim’s best interest to answer questions regarding the scandal to the media after the game as opposed to being childish and refusing to meet with the media after the game and I’m hoping it was at the advice of the council that he didn’t address the media after Saturday night’s game.

This is athletics and there are some things that I will hold Boeheim responsible for and there are things you can’t hold him responsible for. You can’t hold Boeheim responsible for boosters giving the players money because that’s what they do. Boosters give money whether anyone knows or doesn’t know about it. Whether or not it’s within the rule guidelines of the NCAA boosters to give money.

In the case of Syracuse they gave upwards to $8,000 reportedly, the boosters find ways to funnel the money to the students and they will do it no matter what. This is not something new with the Syracuse basketball program this is no surprise, this is no shock and awe. This has been going on for all of Boeheim’s 37 years at Syracuse and he’s most likely not going to be fired or replaced anytime soon.

Let’s call it what it is and Boheim needs to stand up and take responsibility for his actions you have 12 scholarships over the next four years. You can’t appear in the post season for the next five years, Boeheim is suspended for the first nine games of the ACC season for the upcoming fall season. The university will probably appeal that the treatment was too harsh but judging from the violations the NCAA will most likely stick with it’s ruling.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Joe Lami: Sharks turn around has team confidence up SJ driving to move up in the playoff standings

by Joe Lami

SAN JOSE-The San Jose Sharks recalled Taylor Fedun and it’s his first recall up to San Jose since they signed him from over the off season from Edmonton and they brought him up from minor league affiliate Worcester and he was a healthy scratch on Saturday night against the Vancouver Canucks. This recall is more of an emergency call as Matt Irwin is out with an injury.

We don’t expect Fedun to get anytime with the Sharks he will see a lot of practice time and the Sharks will see down the road if Fedun is ready to go when needed. The Sharks who are in the middle of a turn around winning streak look at their last few games as an improvement particularly the games against Montreal last Monday a 4-0 shutout and Tuesday in Vancouver with a four goal 6-2 win.

The Sharks who had a eight game home losing streak going which was one of the worst losing streaks in their history and they needed these wins and it’s still critical every goal, every win and every streak. The win against Montreal was huge as it happened on trade deadline day and the next day they win 6-2 in Vancouver. There were two empty netters in that game but in reality the final was 4-2.

The fact is the Sharks are winning games right now and they may not make the playoffs after hitting a number of snags during the season but right now they’re improving their chances with these recent wins. For example it was crucial that Matt Nieto scored those two goals on Tuesday night he was what seemed to be on a cold streak forever when a lot of these guys get that flow back it’s going to be huge for them going forward.

Then there was the big melee in the first period at 2:05 when the Canucks Jannik Hansen appeared to throw Brenden Dillon into the boards which resulted in fights and multiple penalties. When Hansen threw Dillon into the boards you knew it was residue from that game in Vancouver which the Canucks weren’t too happy about after that loss on their home ice on Tuesday night.

Then the Canucks lost to Arizona 3-2 in a shootout Thursday so the Canucks are riding a two game loss streak and they really haven’t won a road game since Boston in February so the fact is the Canucks are trying to find their energy and that’s what happened and the sequence didn’t get any better with the Canucks and emotions spilled over from Tuesday night’s game and that’s why we saw that blow up on Saturday’s game with Hannik and Dillon at SAP Center.

Golden State Warriors podcast: Warriors very likely could face the Mavericks in best case scenario playoffs

by David Zizmor

OAKLAND–The Golden State Warriors had the Dallas Mavericks number all season and for that matter several seasons going back to the playoffs. The “We Believe” team that beat them although the Warriors were an eighth seeded team and the Mavericks were number one that season. The W’s have been doing well this season against the Mavs and have had a traditional great game.

The Mavs are kind of a centralist team with center Tyson Chandler this season but they don’t play the half court game, they don’t run a half court offense. The Mavs are kind of a moving target just like the Warriors are and the Warriors excel at that. The W’s really have taken it to the Mavs and if you look at the standings there’s a shot that the Warriors could end up playing the Mavs in the first round of the playoffs.

It could take a little bit of shuffling at the back end of that playoff rotation in the west and the Mavs are a team that the Warriors could face. If Golden State played Dallas in the opening round of the playoffs it would be heaven for the W’s because they match up really well against them.

Dallas got out to a very quick six point lead but after that it was all W’s they were up as much as some 20 points. They were up by double digits at the half and it wasn’t even close in the fourth quarter. The Warriors really had that really rough February where they have two home games spaced out by two weeks with the All-Star break in the middle.

The W’s spent almost the entire month of February on the road and it was one of the worst stretches for any team in the NBA, what that means the Warriors through those crazy road games in February the rest of the season between now and the end of April it’s almost all home games. They have a few road games here and there and a legitimate road trip with a three game set with all the Texas teams.

Aside from the three game trip to Houston, San Antonio and Dallas your talking about a road trip to Portland, L.A., Utah, your talking about road trips and one long flight maybe two games at most. The Warriors are looking mostly at home games as we all know the Warriors are really tough to beat at home. The Warriors have only lost two games all season and their 27-2 at Oracle Arena that’s huge.

Stanford basketball podcast by Matt Harrington: Cardinal will need a wild victory upset over Wildcats to move up in the Pac 12 seeding

by Matt Harrington

Saturday the Stanford Cardinal have a big test on their hands in their last game of the season in Arizona and the Pac 12 Championship confirms at this point that the Wildcats are the number one seed coming out of the Pac 12. Their going to be rolling onto the big tournament this month. They have a chance to take on the hardware in Las Vegas in the Pac 12.

It’s going to be a big test for Stanford and it comes at a very unfortunate time for the Cardinal, they’ve struggled in their last two games. Two games that were must wins in order to really have a chance in the NCAA Tournament and unfortunately they didn’t deliver on that. When you look at it how they did against Oregon falling short 73-70.

It was a little bit of an upset due to losing to Arizona State 67-62 on Thursday night that shot their chances of getting a bye in the Pac 12 Tournament and that definitely hurt there resume for the March Madness tournament it looks a little bit glum going into that game. One thing Stanford knows what their fate is going into the Pac 12 Tournament.

The Cardinal are looking at a silver lining here in this game against Arizona which for Stanford is really just a play game to go out and play your best game, doesn’t matter what the results are. Don’t feel the pressure that you have to win, Stanford already knows they fit in the Pac 12, they already know their going to be out of that first round bye for the tournament.

The Cardinal don’t have a lot of confidence for that the biggest consequences is just turning heads and pulling out an upset having the a victory over the number five team in the country would certainly help your chances. Stanford is very much on the wrong side of the bubble right now. It would take a win against Arizona and a pretty miraculous run through the Pac 12 Tournament especially if your looking ahead of what’s in store for Stanford in that first round.

After all that the Cardinal would match up against UCLA a team that really has had Stanford’s number, so tonight against Arizona is going to be a kind of a show me game, a players game, go out and do your game. See what happens and turn some heads but their isn’t a much of a consequence as there was for the last three or four games that Stanford was playing down the stretch.

S.F. Giants & Oakland A’s podcast with Michael Duca: Pence’s arm fracture will end consecutive streak at end at 383; Zito likes his performance in spring debut

by Michael Duca

SCOTTSDALE AZ–The ball that hit Giants outfielder Hunter Pence that fractured his left arm came at the area where all the wrist bones come together. It should not be a major issue on his throwing arm and if his wrist had been bad by the injury he should be able to roll that bottom hand and have the strength to pull the bat through.

It’s a set back there’s no question about it, this is a guy who’s the only person in Major League Baseball whose played every game since mid 2012. He led the Giants in games played, hits, runs scored, RBI’s, stolen bases, and a home run. Other than that he hasn’t contributed much.

Realistically Pence will be out of commission for the next six to eight weeks and the last week of it will be rehab, it will probably take about four weeks in a cast for it to fully heal. He’s going to miss all of spring training and he’ll spend a couple weeks to rehab at Triple A Sacramento to get himself into hitting condition and for him to get used to seeing live pitching.

I’m sure he will stay shape, he will work on his running, he will practice throwing but I’m sure he will not be able to throw it back because his catching hand will be in a cast. With him not being in the line up it will bring the Giants to another time when the Giants remembered what it was like not to have catcher Buster Posey out when he had a broken leg.

Oakland A’s pitcher Barry Zito likes his performance in camp: A’s pitcher Barry Zito has been working with a pitching coach for about seven or eight months now. He said that he squared up his delivery a little bit and he’s getting back to the way he’s been throwing when he was with the A’s years ago.

He never did have anything remotely like throwing an overpowering fastball but he doesn’t need one, he didn’t have to throw 90 MPH and you can ask former Mariners veteran Jamie Moyer who lasted so long with a very successful pitch that didn’t require much velocity and neither did former Braves pitcher Greg Maddox.

For Zito it’s just a matter of placing the ball where you want it and keeping it off the center percussion of the bat and throw some off speed stuff and keep hitters off stride. Zito needs to try to keep the ball from the hitter squaring up and if he does so he’s going to have very successful results. There’s never been a question about his results or his commitment to succeed.

What Zito did on the Giants in 2010 was perhaps the greatest act of sportsmanship that any big league teammate could have done since I’ve been following the game in my lifetime covering or watching MLB. Zito was a healthy scratch for the 2010 post season and sucked it up and supported his teammates. You can rival it with Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum in 2012 who learned everything about that from 2010. Zito was the first guy out on the field in all three rounds of those playoffs and World Series in 2010 and was the last guy to leave the field after the World Series win.

Sacramento Kings podcast by Charlie O: Kings do this game in their sleep with a whopping 38 point victory over Knicks

by Charlie O Mallonee

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings who played in New York last night and won soundly at Madison Square Garden 124-86. This was a make up game that was called off due to a snow blizzard in February. The Knicks could have used a cancelation on Tuesday night after getting upended by the Kings.

The Kings who had to go back to New York were not particularly looking forward to the trip to New York not because they didn’t want to play there but because everybody wants to play the Knicks. The junior high school up from Sleep Train Arena wants to play the Knicks because the Knicks are so terrible.

The Kings started this seven game road trip and all of a sudden they do this make up game they had to travel to New York and play a Tuesday night game then fly overnight to San Antonio and the Kings are expected to get into San Antonio about three in the morning Wednesday. Then they play the Spurs on Wednesday night and they’ll go to bed in Orlando Wednesday night because they have to fly right out of San Antonio after the game to Orlando.

So this is a crazy trip, so to get this trip off to such a spectacular start Kings head coach George Karl and the Kings have to be very excited about annihilating the Knicks by 38 points in the Garden. The Kings had a 100 points at the end of three quarters, that was the kind of run away game it was. They were up 65-30 at half time.

The Kings had six players that scored in double figures on Tuesday night that is just incredible and they were playing the kind of ball that Karl wants them to play. They were executing, they were fast breaking, they scored 29 points on fast breaks to 11 points for fast breaks for the Knicks. That just shows you the transition that they were going on.

The Kings Rudy Gay had 25 points in just over 26 minutes, DeMarcus Cousins 22 points in 28 minutes, that was big because Cousins was just coming back after just missing a couple of games. They didn’t have to leave Cousins out there for 35-38 minutes just to get a win. That was a big thing because they could rest Cousins a little bit and he’ll be rested and be able to play in San Antonio on Wednesday night.

San Francisco Giants podcast by Jeremy Kahn: No need to worry about Mad Bum after his spring training debut

by Jermey Kahn

SAN FRANCISCO–We all know San Francisco Giant pitcher Tim Lincecum’s stats and his resume and he’s a two time Cy Young Award winner he’s been with the team for all three World Series championships starting in 2010 and he’s struggled a little bit in the last couple of seasons but no worries he’s going to be back.

He’s Lincecum anything can happen and you know how this game rolls and it happens a lot and the Freak, the Franchise will be back this season and we’ll see how Timmy works the plate. He went back to his father Chris whose helping him out again with his pitching skills after whatever was happening the last two seasons wasn’t working.

Lincecum played once in the post season after the Giants won that third championship last season, so this is a really smart decision of Lincecum getting back with his dad. Also he’s getting help from Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti who is the best pitching in MLB bar none.

The pitch clock has been used in different levels of baseball and with this new rule about the pitch clock I’ve seen this happen and it happens all the time and it’s really good that MLB is really doing this. Madison Baumgarner who gave up four runs in 1.2 innings in Tuesday’s game against the Oakland A’s, it’s his first time since he’s pitched since October my gosh and it’s spring training and the game doesn’t count.

Wait until April for that first game in Arizona we’ll see what the Mad Bum will bring to the game then when it counts. He’s been in camp for two weeks, my God if people get mad about a spring training game on March 3rd there’s problems here. There is a pitch clock and you have 20 seconds to throw, the pitchers are not rushing or shouldn’t be under any pressure it could change the game but we’ll see but for right now who knows.

The move to have Nori Aoki to lead off and move Angel Pagan to the third hole will be a good move for the Giants having Aoki in the top of the order and the Pagan hitting third, Buster Posey fourth, followed by Joe Panik, Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt. That’s a good one through six in the line up right there. That can be a very dangerous one through six when the season starts again in April.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Baseball six rules

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

Attention baseball fans! Coming to your city! Better get used to them! There will be six(6)new rules this 2015 season in order to “speed up” the game.

1.Hitters must keep at least one foot inside the batter’s box at all times, barring exceptions like foul balls, wild pitches, or if the umpire grants him time out.

2.Pitchers must throw a pitch within 20 seconds of receiving the ball. Clocks posted in each dugout will count down the 20 seconds.

3.There will be a maximum break between innings of 2:05, with a clock keeping track. Hitters must be in the batter’s box by 1:45. If the hitter’s not ready, the umpire can call a strike. If the pitcher doesn’t throw a pitch by 2:05, the umpire can call a ball.

4.Teams will have a maximum of 2:30 to change pitchers, with the clock starting as soon as the reliever enters the playing field.

5.Teams are limited to a maximum of three mound visits per game, not including pitching changes. This applies to trips to the mound by managers, coaches, and catchers.

6.Pitchers no longer have to deliver four balls for an intentional walk. The manager can simply signal to the umpire.

The average MLB game lasted three hours and eight minutes in 2014

I agree with the first five, but I have a disagreement on number six. I think the pitchers should still deliver four balls when the manager calls for the intentional walk. With men on base there is always the opportunity that the pitcher might throw a wild pitch, while delivering the four intentional balls; I believe that takes away from the game.

As a traditionalist, I do not believe in many changes to the game of baseball, which it is after all, a unique game, unlike any other, unlike basketball and football and soccer and hockey where the arenas are all the same dimensions in each city, baseball is the most colorful and different, each park has its peculiarities, Fenway Park in Boston and Coors Field in Denver are as different as day and night, and that is what makes the game of baseball(among other nuances)a great game.

This was bound to happen, in a world of fast communications, little patience and quick answers baseball doesn’t conform to these modern models in the sports world. When I was a kid growing up, I learned how to score a game, most kids going to baseball games today have absolutely no idea on how to score, or how to follow game, but they can Twitter around the world, and text the person sitting in the next seat.

Baseball faces those challenges. There was a time where baseball was the national pastime, today Football has passed baseball, thanks to television(NFL is made perfectly for television)and other sports are not far behind. The new Commissioner indicated he is open to ideas of a shorter season. Less than 162 games, and that I think it will eventually happen, and very soon.

It will be interesting this season, the first with these new rules. Everybody is going to have to adapt to it, veteran players might have a harder time, than younger players, meanwhile it is also a learning process for all the managers.

One of the things that always separated baseball from the rest, is the lack of clocks. Obviously that is changing. However, extra innings will continue, for those than missed double headers and want more baseball, so we can always find the glass half full…or half empty.
