NFL podcast & commentary with Tony Renteria: Hernandez fiancee found gun in kitchen drawer before Lloyd murder

by Tony Renteria

SANTA CLARA–Former New England Patriot wide receiver Aaron Hernandez’ fiancée testified on Friday that she found a gun in the kitchen drawer in Hernandez’ house just days before the June 17, 2013 murder of Hernandez associate Lloyd Oldin. Hernandez fiancee Shayanna Jenkins who has been to court at various but made her first appearance in court on Friday since March 6th said she made the discovery when going through the kitchen drawers looking for utensils.

You have to be in really bad trouble when your wife or your fiancée testifies against you in exchange for immunity. There has to be something that’s there. That has to be the smoking gun (no pun) and it’s such a waste of a talented football player to end yuur career to go to jail for murder. Hernandez could not separate his past from being a professional athlete. The court reconvenes on Monday.

Adrian Peterson starts to shop for new team: Peterson said that he and his agent are shopping around for another team other than the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said that he expects Peterson to return. This is coming off of last season’s suspension of Peterson for spanking his son with a switch, Peterson was arrested and investigated for child abuse last season.

Peterson said this is the way he was raised and disciplining his child and this is the way he wants to raise his child. He could ask the Vikings “who are you as my employer to ask how I handle my family?” Sometimes when your in the limelight of the NFL your private life gets involved in your public life. At one point Peterson was ordered by the courts to stay away from his son. Peterson says he’s ready to get back to football after such a turmoil year.

49ers fans raising money to get Yorks out: So far San Francisco 49ers fans have raised some two thousand dollars in a bid to get a fund going to get 49ers owner Jed York and his family out from under the 49ers the money eventually will be used to try and buy the team from the Yorks. The fans want what the Green Bay Packers have and that is a fan owned organization. The fans have expressed their fed up with the Yorks over the handling of former head coach Jim Harbaugh’s leaving and the rest of the key players jumping ship.

If I was a 49ers fan after going through everything to get the new stadium, having to pay crazy ticket prices, having to endure the long lines outside the stadium before the games you want to see them take a step forward from where they were. It’s tough to deal with such a high at one point with playoffs and a Super Bowl and keep that going but the 49ers are going so far down and so fast it’s like an elevator going from the top floor to the bottom floor and I don’t see how they will easily recover this season from this bad off season and I don’t really blame the fans for raising these funds.

How will former 49er Ray McDonald work out in Chicago: McDonald who faced domestic violence allegations and sexual assault allegations and signed with the Bears last week. McDonald’s situation is something that carried through with everything that was going on with the NFL last season. It was such a bad season when it came to domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Its tough to say if the 49ers did the right thing letting McDonald go and the 49ers need to start distancing themselves from that type of character on their squad. This is something that your hearing about all the time in the NFL especially during the 2014-15 season. Did the Bears do the right thing? Players always seems to find a place to play in the NFL by what kind of character you are.

Sacramento Kings podcast with Charlie O: Karl reason for Kings three game win streak

by Charlie O Mallonee

SACRAMENTO–The biggest part of the Kings three game win streak success has been they’ve been listening to head coach George Karl. Karl came in and said, “I want to look at these final 30 games as a mini season and see what we can do.” The Kings have been working at becoming that team with a dribble drive offense.

Basic philosophy shoot the three or score in the key that’s the whole point of the dribble drive. It’s interesting because one of the reasons why they let former head coach Mike Malone go was over the pace of play. They started to try to make some of those changes with former head coach Tyrone Corbin and they weren’t really able to get those things implemented.

Karl came in and the team has really bought in and there working hard on it. There is nothing in the world that’s harder for a team in any sport to have to try to make changes on the fly during the course of a season and Karl has been able to get a team that has obviously been down in the mouth.

The Kings had a season that went so poorly and their on their third head coach and he’s been able to get them to buy in playing a different style of basketball. You look back over this three game win streak starting off last Friday night against the Charlotte Hornets the Kings beat the Hornets in Charlotte.

So the Kings have a little bit of confidence coming in but Charlotte has a pretty good team and the Hornets are more than likely going to the playoffs. That’s not saying a whole lot because a lot of people would have picked them anyway to go to the playoffs in the eastern conference.

The Kings came in and played some great basketball without DeMarcus Cousins, Cousins has been up and down all season long, as long as we know since he had that battle with meningitis. He’s just not been that tough physically as we might have expected because Cousins is still battling health issues. The Kings are in Phoenix tonight and then in New Orleans on Friday in a bid to try to get a fourth win in a row.

San Francisco Giants podcast: Former beat writer Nick Peters remembered by Sportstalk’s Michael Duca

by Michael Duca

SCOTTSDALE AZ–Nick Peters former San Francisco Giants beat writer who worked for 47 years covering the Giants for the Sacramento Bee or the Oakland Tribune passed on Monday at the age of 75 from a rare form of Parkinson’s. His passing was not like it was not expected he had been fighting Parkinson’s for three or four years. It becomes a phase in, as he was unable to speak the last couple of years. The death of Nick hit me especially hard.

I was terribly fond of Nick I grew up reading the Sporting News as a kid and all the way though college and writer Kit Steir helped me keep up with my love for the Giants in Southern California where I went to school and I then followed Nick Peters who wrote for the Sporting News. I won a trivia contest and that was at a time when I was absolutely nobody and I won the contest from a local cable TV channel prior to a road trip with the Giants.

This happened during Robby Thompson’s and Will Clark’s rookie years, We went to Philadelphia and New York and Nick got to know me a little in Philadelphia and New York and he asked me if this was my first visit to Philly and the Big Apple and I said “yes”. He then asked “where are your seats?” I said it was right by the Giants dugout, he said you really won’t get anything sitting there why don’t you sit up in the third deck and he said “come sit with me tonight”.

After seven innings he sat in the stands with me and he kept score on a scoring pad and he took notes and he wrote his story. Of course he was on the east coast and the deadline on the west coast was not eminent. I was more impressed with him because he had time to sit down and talk to me during the game and he asked me what I had learned about baseball and he wanted to share his knowledge about baseball.

It was the beginning of a very long lovely friendship. He will be sorely missed and he was Mr.Everyman there not an ounce of pretense in Nick. That made him a Hall of Fame man whether or not he was a Hall of Fame writer. He covered more San Francisco Giants games as a beat writer than any other human being. Nick traveled and did all the road games and did all the home games for he Giants.

He had time for everybody whether they were a Hall of Fame writer or a student intern reporter he talked to everybody. Larry Stone who formerly wrote for the San Francisco Examiner and was the sports editor at the Daily Cal and Nick was the sports editor for the Berkeley-Richmond some of the best newspapers around at the time covering sports. Nick always made time for Larry giving him tips on helping him understand what it meant to be a professional writer. Nick Peters we salute you, you were a class act and a great, great friend, and you are in our prayers today.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Jermey Kahn: Sabean has got the faith Pagan and Pence will come back with a flourish

by Jeremy Kahn

SAN FRANCISCO–Giants general manager Brian Sabean made it no secret that when it comes to Hunter Pence (broken arm) and Angel Pagan (back) they will be back and they will be back to show those National League teams a thing or two. It’s a good thing what Sabean is doing it’s still early on and Saben is confident that Pagan will be back from his back injury soon.

Pence should be back in the next couple of weeks from his broken wrist injury on his left arm that he suffered a few weeks back. The Giants will be fine they’ll have outfielder Nori Akoi and Gregor Blanco doing outfield duty and Pagan will be ready and everything will be alright at AT&T Park for the regular season. So Sabean is very confident and whatever he says has been working and he’s got the World Series rings to prove it.

Sabean right now is up there with Yankee’s general manager Brian Cashman as one of the top GM’s in all of baseball. Pence will be back in he Giants fold full force by the second or third week of April The Giants have limited their budget to $160 million and they’re not about to go out and look and sign a high priced replacement for Pence or Pagan they don’t have a lot of money right now.

They can’t get a ace outfielder like the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Mets or the Phillies. The Giants don’t have that type of money to go out there and get a player like that. The Red Sox have shopped Alan Craig and Cody Ross and the Diamondbacks have shopped Will Venable but the Giants are not taking and they’re not giving up their young prospects in the minors for them either nor do they want to take on any more contract salaries.

The Giants have some young players and Sabean will bring them up if necessary and they have big prospects Gary Brown and Matt Duffy and Duffy came up for a cup of coffee last season and was part of that World Series team. It’s Gary Brown’s job to lose. Brown will need more than a cup of coffee in the show as he needs to dictate big league pitching now.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Bob Melvin still to make big decisions

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

MESA AZ–As I spoke with Oakland A’s manger Bob Melvin during batting practice at the new Hohokam Stadium he told me he still has not decided who are going to be his starters after #1 Sonny Gray and #2 Scott Kazmir. Those two(free of injuries the rest of this spring training)you can write in ink, but the second part of that rotation? A’s pitchers A.J.Griffin and Jarrod Parker are not going to be in the rotation come April, they’re still rehabbing. Were still a couple of weeks away until the A’s end their Arizona part of spring training and head to the bay for three games against the World Champion San Francisco Giants, looking to tie the A’s this year with a fourth World Series title.

I have seen Sonny Gray in two outings here in the desert; and he looks as good as ever and would not be surprised if he has a very good year, even among those competing for the Cy Young in the American League. Scott Kazmir is the veteran of this staff right now, may I say the “super veteran” almost like the Bartolo Colon of the A’s staff, he has won in the past and there is no reason to believe he will not win this year.

After that, however, things get much more complicated. A’s pitchers Kendall Graveman, Jesse Hahn, get used to these names, because they could easily make this team right now. However, the two times I have seen Drew Pomeranz pitch here, I do not see how Bob Melvin doesn’t give him a spot in that rotation, #3, 4, 5? I do not know, but I expect Pomeranz to make this starting rotation.

Jesse Hahn cost the A’s catcher Derek Norris and Kendall Graveman was even a more expensive trade, he cost them one of the best players in the league, Josh Donaldson. And then…do not forget Jesse Chavez, who is always in the mkix, starting, in the bullpen, he is always ready, his determination and poise always has him fighting for a rotation spot, or even the bullpen. Jesse Chavez is the ultimate “team pitcher”.

So you ask how’s about Barry Zito? The ex-Cy Young Award winning with the A’s has not done much to hurt his chances; but for this veteran it could even be another team in his future, a possible Billy Beane trade? Do not bet against it! These are the Oakland A’s, they traded Cespedes in July and Donaldson after the season, that was the heart of their lineup, and they went Adios.

There is no more important decision for a major league manager than when to take a pitcher out of a game; but this year for manager Bob Melvin the most difficult decision might be which of these new faces make his rotation. He works well with pitching coach Curt Young, who is as good as any pitching coach today in baseball. Curt Young is a quiet man, but works very well with manager Bob Melvin, and there is little doubt in my mind, that Curt Young’s input is the key to Melvin’s ears.

But at the end, Bob Melvin is the guy that has to make the call. I asked Melvin how much of a challenge this year to have so many new faces in camp, and he told me: “We like that, there is no problem, we are getting used to each other”.

Unless they are some major surprises, like first baseman Ike Davis returning to his “slugger”form when he was with the New York Mets, and the A’s get great run production from him, as well as from Brett Lawrie, the new third-baseman hopefully he can play 124 or more games and stay healthy, the Oakland Athletics this year in one of the strongest divisions in baseball. The A’s will go as far as their pitching takes them. I do not expect this team to score a lot of runs.

The starting rotation will probably be named later this spring training, because these young arms are competing and looking very good, which makes Melvin’s decision tougher but sweet. All we know is that Sonny Gray will open the season April 6 at the Oc.com Coliseum against the Texas Rangers, minus the Rangers #1 pitcher Yu Darvish, Tommy John surgery out the whole season.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Giants split squads drop two games on Sunday

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

SCOTTSDALE AZ–The San Francisco Giants played the Los Angeles Angles for the second day in a row, after losing on Saturday by a 3-2 score at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Today Madison Bumgarner started for the Giants and C.W Wilson for the Angels.

Albert Pujols baptized MadBum early with a solo shot, his second home run of the spring. However, Bumgarner settled down and pitched six very good innings, retiring the last 16 Halos he faced, and the home run by Pujols, was the only hit he allowed.

C.J Wilson didn’t do that well for the Angels. The lefty went 4 1/3 innings, allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, and walked 4. The two runs were home runs by young Giants, Matt Duffy in the first inning and Justin Maxwell three innings later. For the Giants Gregor Blanco had 2 hits and Justin Maxwell also reached base with 2 hits. Wilson was very inconsistent last season and considering he is the #2 starter for the Angels behind Jered Weaver(who is having a terrific spring) is an extremely important piece for the Halos, who last year led baseball with 98 wins, to win the Western Division, and are one of the favorites, with the Mariners to win this division in 2015.

For the Angels the reigning American League MVP Mike Trout, considered the best player in the game had a hit in three at bats and ended the day batting .500 for the spring, and looks like he is ready for Opening Night at Seattle.

Today also in Surprise, Arizona. The Kansas City Royals beat the Giants 4-2.

Good news for the Giants: The Los Angeles Dodgers are the team to beat this year in the Western Division , however the Dodgers did not receive very good news. Pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was told he will start the season on the disabled list, with an injured left shoulder. Ryu tried to play catch Sunday, after receiving cortisone shot this past Friday, but he could not stretch his arm. Last year he was sidelined twice for that same stiffness on his left shoulder. Injuries are part of the game, the Giants will not have Hunter Pence ready for Opening Day here in Arizona against the Diamondbacks, and now their biggest rivals will not have Ryu to start the season.

Anecdote from the past: How important should you take Spring Training individual performances? Most people realize that this is only Spring Training, games final scores do not count, and that is why many games end in a tie, something that would never happen during the regular season. My best anecdote of “not to make much “about what we see here in Arizona, happened in 1990.

I was in camp as I was broadcasting the Athletics. Pitcher Bob Welch had a terrible, I mean terrible Spring Training. He was so bad, that we were asking manager Tony LaRussa if he was ok, rumors surfaced that Welch was hurt, and was not telling anybody. He was a mainstay in that rotation, so everybody expected Welch to go through camp and free of injury and he looked like what he was, a very good established pitcher, together with A’s ace Dave Stewart.

At the end of the regular season, that same year Welch ended with a record of 27-6 2.95, pitched 238 innings and won the American League Cy Young Award. Welch passed last year at the age of 57, he lived in Seal Beach, in the Huntington Beach/Newport Beach area of Los Angeles. Welch is the last pitcher in the majors to win at least 25 games in a single season, and the last one to win 27 games. Prior to that sensational season by Welch, the great Steve Carlton won 27 games in 1972.

Health is the #1 concern for all teams in Spring Training, but never put much credence on a performance, good or bad, because unless the player is hurt, it is great to have a good spring, but that in the standings means, absolutamente nada.

With the games today, we are at half point of the Spring Training game schedule. The A’s and Giants will close their Spring Training with the Bay Series, Thursday and Friday April 2 and 3 at AT&T Park and Saturday April 4 at the O.Co Coliseum.

March Madness podcast with Michelle Richardson: Coach K and Duke crush San Diego State; Wichita St gets third round in two years

by Michelle Richardson

Duke 68 S.Diego 49: Duke is just one of those schools you look at them and they’ll start off the season really great and you’ll be down for Duke but when it comes around time this is like the second season. When it gets around time to get into round 65 it becomes a second season. Duke head coach Mike Kryzezwski got his players to handle the Aztecs.

San Diego State played strong, they had 13 points from Winston Sheppard and 26 from Jahlil Okafor for Duke. JJ O’Brien with seven rebounds for San Diego and to Duke’s Justise Winslow’s 13 rebounds. I’m always a believer when it comes to basketball defense creates offense and if your getting a rebound and getting second chances and cleaning up the glass on offense and defensive rebounds that puts you in a better situation to be able to win.

Winslow he put on a show he had five assists he had one block on O’Brien that was just a tremendous snuff and like I said it’s Duke. Duke can’t have what happened to them last year when unknown Mercer who is in the Southern Conference. Last year they shocked the NCAA world by knocking out Duke in the first round.

Michigan State 60 Virginia 54: The Michigan State Spartans won by six on Sunday and their there to make a statement. The Big Ten is really making a statement with their number of teams. Michigan over UVA was huge and the Spartans got help from Travis Trice with 23 points and UVA’s Anthony Gill’s 11 points.

The top rebounder for Michigan Brendon Dawson nine and for UVA Darion Atkins 14 even though UVA had the top rebounder they just weren’t making the shots. The shots were not falling for UVA, blocks and steals in this one pretty much even but you have to remember that offense creates defense. Michigan St was just on point with points for averages and field goals.

Those three pointers got UVA and what can you say it’s Michigan State this is what they do. The Cavaliers went 30-4 this season their the first ACC Team to lose after going 9-0 in the tournament. This is the first time a ACC team has been knocked out after an 9-0 start. The ACC has got tougher and this was a great season for UVA but a tough loss.

Wichita State 78 Kansas 65: The pride of Missouri Valley Wichita State lived up to it’s name Shockers and they took names with a whopping win over the Kansas Jayhawks. The Shockers who are ranked number seven moved up on number two rank Kansas with a 13 point win on Sunday night. The win gets the Shockers into the Sweet 16.

Tekele Cotton lead all Shocker scorers with 19 points, Fred Van Fleet 17 points, and Evan Wessel hit four three points to tally up 12 points. The Shockers are now headed to the Midwest Regionals in Cleveland to face Notre Dame on Thursday. The win marks the second time that Wichita State will be in the third round.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Angels walk off on Giants 3-2

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

TEMPE AZ–Diablo Stadium is the oldest stadium in the Cactus League, and Saturday it was standing room only. It was the first of two meetings this spring between these California rivals the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angles, Sunday they will play again in Scottsdale, home of the Giants. The Angels will visit San Francisco in the regular season, May 1-3 2015.

Lots of fans in Red-Angels and many also in Orange-Giants garb. After watching the first six innings in the press box, I took a walk among the thousands of fans Saturday afternoon; enjoy baseball, the sun, the beer and the munchies. A few young Giants fans beer in hand commented “we are entering the Red Sea” referring to the Angels fans on hand. Some others in the left field grassy knoll, these Angels fans were debating how far the Giants are going this year, one said “no way this teams win the World Series again dude”. Well they were probably right considering in today’s lineup there was no Pagan, or Posey or Belt. Tim Lincecum started for the Giants, the two-time Cy Young winner, looked like Timmy of old, as he pitched four solid innings giving just 1 run and 2 hits, walking 1, and throwing 41 pitches, (24 were strikes).

The Giants faced the Angels ace Jered Weaver, who blanked the Giants for 5 2/3 innings. As a matter of fact Weaver’s last two starts have been masterful; throwing 10 1.3 innings and allowing just one run on two hits, a walk, while striking out 11. The Angels won on a walk-off single by Kyle Kubitza, from reliever Javy Lopez. The winning pitcher was Cesar Ramos 1-0(3.60), Javy Lopez now 0-1(6.75).

Hot Halos: Reigning MPV Mike Trout is hitting .517 with three home runs, two doubles, one triple and 12 RBI…Albert Pujols is hitting .313 with a home run and seven runs batted it…CJ Cron, mostly the team DH, is at .395 with 4 doubles, two homers and six RBI…Collin Cowgill is batting. 409 with 6 doubles and 4 RBI.

Giants Notes: Brandon Belt ranks third among Cactus League leaders with a ,.364 average and three home runs. After this game today, the Giants have only 13 more Cactus League games before the club breaks camp and heads home for the Bay Area series against the Oakland Athletics(April 2,3,4). The Giants open the regular season here against the Diamondbacks in Phoenix on April 6. Shawon Dunston turns 52 years old today, he is Assistant Coach/Video replay analyst for the team. He also lives in Fremont.

As I watched the game in the booth to the left of LA Angels Terry Smith and Jose Mota,(where I usually sit with Fox Sports producer Scott) some good friends of past and present dropped by, one was veteran journalist Barry Bloom, now living in this area. For a long time he was the MLB.COM beat reporter on the Commissioner Bud Selig. Bloom and I go back to the late 1970’s as he was covering the Bay Area teams. I always enjoy talking with Barry, especially when we can reminisce. As we spoke about the hits and failures of departing Commissioner Bud Selig, we both agree that his #1 accomplishment during his tenure was to preside over the biggest era of prosperity for Major League Baseball.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Matt Harrington: NIT game with Rhode Island could be a close call on Sunday

by Matt Harrington

PALO ALTO–The Stanford Cardinal are trying to add another winning banner to their NIT record like they did last season and it was a big one in terms of the program you had with two players who really stepped up and had huge contributions and these are players that are going to be asked to come back next year and fill some pretty big roles.

It’s good to see Marcus Allen put up 22 points a career high who went 10-12 on shooting for the night, that’s pretty impressive hitting two threes that’s good for him. He’s going to be called upon to fill the role Chasson Randle once Randle is gone. Allen is expected to be one of the returning five in the guard position.

It’s going to be on his shoulders next season so it’s good to see Allen contributing with a big effort and the Reid Travis picking up a double double plus ten rebounds. He’s going to spot in for a departing player Anthony Brown whose going to be gone next year. Travis is going to have to fill that forward role with a different look from Brown.

Brown is a good three point shooter, a good defensive stopper when the ball is on the court, Travis in that game against UC Davis was a monster down there, he was a physical presence and he’s going to bang away in the paint and pick up some rebounds and some points there in the paint and that’s what he showed in that game and that was a good sign for the future of the Cardinal against UC Davis.

There was a little caveat it was Randle going for that 18 points and he’s 62 points away from heading into that number one spot for career points all time for Stanford. It was a meaningful game, it was an impactful game even though it was an NIT game against a team that Stanford normally plays in the first couple weeks of the season and it was good they had Davis early on the schedule.

The game with Rhode Island is going to be interesting on Sunday, the Rams are not a team that blows you away on paper. You start with two players that are averaging double digits in scoring and one of them is a bench player. You start looking at it and you start wondering what does this team have? You start seeing some of the teams that the Rams played and they faced Delaware and Kansas and they played them very close. So the game with Stanford is expected to be a tight ball game at Maples Pavilion.
