Giants 49ers Week Five Preview

By: Joe Lami

Tensions have been rising in the 49ers locker room after last week’s 17-3 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The defense made significant improvements, especially with the front seven making Aaron Rodgers feel pressure. However, the offense fell short once again and couldn’t get anything going. The 49ers schedule doesn’t get any easier after this week as they will face the Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks. This upcoming week will be the best chance for San Francisco to win in the month of October, as they travel to New York to take on the 2-2 Giants.

New York is on a two-game winning streak after a tough opening week loss to the Cowboys and a four-point loss to the Falcons in week two. Since then, they’ve won both of their games by a combined 25 points. Eli Manning has seven touchdowns through the first four weeks and will be the primary concern for the 49ers. His go-to target, Odell Beckham Jr.has 24 receptions on the year for 307 yards and two scores.

Manning has been sacked four times so far this season, making it crucial for the front seven to get the same pressure on him that they got on Rodgers. If they don’t, Manning will be able to tear up the questionable Niners’ secondary.

If the 49ers’ defense can hold up, it won’t guarantee a win, as San Francisco has one of the worst offenses in the league. They are ranked last in both points per game and passing yards per game. The only bright spot has been their running attack, averaging 130 yards per game, good enough for fifth-best in the NFL.  However, the primary ball carrier, Carlos Hyde had a terrible game against the Packers, carrying the ball eight times for 20 yards.

Head coach, Jim Tomsula still has faith in quarterback, Colin Kaepernick and might be the only one in the bay area, let alone the country to still have faith in the third-year quarterback. Kaep has thrown for 727 yards on 72 competitions, two touchdowns and five interceptions on the year. The offensive line continues to be a major concern for San Francisco as he has been sacked a total of 14 times. However, the Giants aren’t the best at getting to the Quarterback as they only have five on the year.

This week is a crucial week for the 49ers as it is already a must-win to salvage the first part of the season. If they don’t win, it doesn’t look like they’ll get another victory until November 1st in week eight at the Rams, and even that isn’t a guarantee.

Prediction: The 49ers somehow mustard up enough offense, while their defense keeps them in the game to get their second victory of the year. San Francisco 10 New York 7

Packers Set to Destroy 49ers Sunday

By: Joe Lami

After two straight nightmare performances for the 49ers (1-2), things won’t get easier this week for the red and gold, as the Green Bay Packers (3-0) come to Levi’s Stadium this Sunday.

The 49ers are coming off of one of their worst performances of recent memory, as they were blown out by the Arizona Cardinals 47-7 in week three. Things went down hill fast as Colin Kaepernick was intercepted twice in the first two drives with both interceptions brought back for touchdowns.  The 49ers were trailing 14-0 within the first six minutes of the contest, and it was the first time since 1925 a game started with the quarterback throwing two pick sixes in the first two drives.

Kaepernick was intercepted four times in the contest, a career-worst and finished his day 9 of 19 for 67 yards. He also got the only touchdown on a 12-yard scamper to the left. The running game didn’t come to the rescue either, as Carlos Hyde was shut down, running for 51 yards on 15 carries.

Things didn’t get too much better for the 49ers defense either, as the secondary got lit up again. Carson Palmer threw for 311 yards going 20 of 32 for two touchdowns and throwing an easy interception to Anton Bethea. The Cardinals were also able to get the running game going, as Chris Johnson finished the day with 110 yards on 22 carries for two touchdowns.

With the horrendous performance Kaepernick had on Sunday, Niners coach Jim Tomsula reiterated his confidence in his quarterback.  He may seem to be the only person in the Bay Area with confidence in the man that finished with a quarterback rating of 16.7%.

The 49ers only hope this week comes from catching the Packers on a short week, as Green Bay defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 38-28 on Monday night.  Aaron Rodgers went off for Green Bay as he finished with an outstanding night of 333 yards and five touchdowns.  Rodgers now leads the NFL with passing scores with ten in just three contests.

Kansas City was able to shut down Eddie Lacy, as he only carried the ball ten times for 46 yards. Causing one would have to think that the Packers are going to go in with the same game plan and let the ball fly with Rodgers. His main target on the year has been Randall Cobb, who leads the Packers with 20 receptions for 245 yards and four touchdowns.

Unfortunately, it’s going to be another ugly week for San Francisco, as they are going to be embarrassed at home by Green Bay this coming Sunday. They have shown no improvement in the secondary, and an all-pro quarterback like Rodgers is geared up to have an absolute field day.

Late Earthquakes Goal Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

By: Joe Lami

San Jose, Calif.—The San Jose Earthquakes picked up three crucial points on Sunday evening, as they beat Real Salt Lake 1-0 in a must win match.  With the playoffs looming, San Jose is on the outside looking in, but the three points put them on the brink of the playoffs with a huge game next Saturday against Vancouver with only three games remaining.

The Quakes owned RSL all 90-minutes in shots but were just unlucky with finishing.  San Jose had many chances, as they outshot Salt Lake 20-6.

“We had a lot of chances; that’s the good thing. Give Nick Rimando some credit. The one thing was we didn’t stop pushing forward. We didn’t get frustrated and put our heads down,” Quakes’ head coach, Dominic Kinnear said.

RSL keeper, Rimando, stoned the Earthquakes until the 87th minute when Matias Perez Garcia was finally able to find the back of the net.  He received a ball from Quincy Amarikwa and kicked it with his left foot right into a defender. The ball bounced off the defender to the right side of the net for the winner.

Garcia celebrated the game-winner by taking his shirt off and earned a yellow card on the play. It would mean the end of Garcia’s day, as it was his second yellow card of the match. Garcia was booked in the 77th minute on a play involving RSL star, Kyle Beckerman. Unfortunately for Garcia and the Quakes, the red card means that he will be unable to play in next’s Saturday’s match.

“It’s secondary for what was going on. Looking back on it now, it wasn’t the smartest thing to do. He probably at the moment didn’t realize he had a card. In the end, I’m glad we won the game, and that’s the most important thing.” Kenner added.

Garcia mentioned, “in the moment, the joy, I wasn’t thinking about the other yellow card.” Quakes captain, Chris Wondolowski, added, “sometimes the passion gets the best of you. It was a huge goal, late, the game winner. I wish we could have him Saturday, but I’m glad the ball went in the net right now”.

49ers Look to Rebound Against Arizona

By: Joe Lami

The San Francisco 49ers (1-1) look to rebound after last week’s eye-opening 43-18 loss to the Pittsburg Steelers.  They travel to take on the NFC West-leading, Arizona Cardinals (2-0) at University of Phoenix Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After running the ball so well in week one, the 49ers were unable to recreate the magic against the Steelers as Carlos Hyde was only able to muster up 43 yards on the ground before leaving the contest with an apparent head injury that was later reported as a leg injury.

However, although the running game was non-existent, quarterback Colin Kaepernick made up for it and threw for an impressive 335 yards for two touchdowns and a passer rating of 106.7. Although Kaepernick’s performance was an impressive one, the offensive line  showed what was feared going into the season, as they allowed five sacks on their quarterback.

The defense was a nightmare against Pittsburg, as Ben Roethlisburger threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns. Backup running back, DeAngelo Williams also scored three times while rushing for only 77 yards.

The Cardinals are going to be a defensive nightmare for the 49ers, as they lead the league in scoring, averaging just under 40 points per game. They’ve been keeping a balance passing attack from Carson Palmer and running attack from Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington. Palmer has looked his best since his days with the Cincinnati Bengals and has new life with the NFC West’s most dangerous team right now, as they are currently the favorites to win the division.

Star wide receiver, Larry Fitzgerald, will be Palmer’s number one target on Sunday as he has 14 catches for 199 yards through the first two weeks. It will be pivotal for the sub-par 49ers’ secondary to be able to shut-down the potential hall-of-famer.

On the offensive side of the ball, the 49ers will be going up against the tenth best running defense in the league making it a tall task for Hyde and Jarryd Hayne, as it looks like backup running back Reggie Bush will be out once again with a strained left calf.

However, much of the chances for the 49ers will come from passing the ball as Arizona’s defense is ranked as one of the worst in the league. After Kaepernick’s great performance last week, he will look to add on it and become the consistent quarterback that San Francisco fans have been longing for since he became the starter.

San Francisco has been historically good against the Cardinals with a record of 29-18, with a record of 12-10 at University of Phoenix stadium. With this week being such a huge game for the red and gold, as they can tie the Cardinals for the division lead with a win, it will be crucial for the offensive line to step up and protect Kaepernick. Kaepernick will need to keep his mistakes to a minimum and play like he did last week against Pittsburg to get the victory.

Prediction:

The Cardinals passing game is going to be too strong for the 49ers’ secondary, as Palmer won’t have any issues carving it up on way to the Cardinals 28-13 victory.

Giants Ended Scoreless Streak, Earn Hudson a Win as his Career Winds Down

By: Joe Lami

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Entering Sunday afternoon, the San Francisco Giants were held scoreless for 19 straight innings, as they were shutout on both Friday and Saturday by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The streak would be carried to 24 innings, as the Giants finally ended the streak with a rally in the sixth in the 5-1 victory.

Angel Pagan led the inning off with a base hit to left, just the second hit of the game for San Francisco. Alejandro De Aza followed Pagan and started the at-bat by trying to lay down a bunt on the first pitch. However, the bunt was taken off for the second pitch where De Aza lined one down the left-field line bringing in Pagan in the process and giving the Giants the lead.

Buster Posey would come to the plate with two on after Matt Duffy walked on five pitches and hit his 19th homer of the season to the left field power alley. The three-run wall scraper brought his RBI total up to 93 on the season. “You’ll see Buster get some (MVP) votes,” added Giants’ manager, Bruce Bochy.

The sixth-inning explosion was much needed as the Giants had been shut out in 35 straight innings at home against Arizona.

Tim Hudson was on the mound for San Francisco in what is most likely his second to last start at AT&T Park, as the veteran is heading towards retirement at the end of the season.

“The guys wanted to find a way to get a win for him,” said Bochy. Hudson added, “I don’t have too many more of these, I’m taking each one as it was my last and I’m just having fun”.

It was an impressive one for Hudson, as he earns his eighth win on the season pitching six shutout innings while giving up four hits and striking out three.

““He did his job, and we found him a way to get him the win,” comment Bochy.

Hudson used the ground ball to great effect early on.  Arizona got early base runners in both the first and second innings, but Hudson was able to get the ground balls needed, earning two double plays in the first five outs of the game.

Hudson continues his dominance over Arizona, as his career record improves to 11-2 over the D-backs.

Matt Duffy was brought home to make it 5-0 in the eighth inning, as he led the inning off with a walk. Duffy then stole his ninth base of the year to remain perfect on steal attempts. Bochy later added “Duffy runs the bases better than anyone on the club”.  Rookie, Jarrett Parker earned his third career RBI on a base hit to right.

Santiago Casilla came to pitch the ninth and gave up the lonely Diamondbacks run to David Peralta who smacked his 16th home run on a solo shot to right.

Hudson’s next time out is scheduled to be against his first team, the Oakland A’s. He’s especially looking forward to the chance he goes up against his former buddy, Barry Zito, who pitched an inning in Oakland’s 5-1 loss to Houston. “I’m looking forward to my next start in Oakland. It’s going to be a lot of fun to take the mound where I started my career. If things work out, things would be a lot of fun for the both of us. He’s been a great friend and a great teammate for a lot of years, and I’m glad they brought him up. It would be fun to be on the same field as him, and hopefully we’ll be pitching at the same time,” he added.

Leake Does It All in His First Giants Win

By: Joe Lami

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—

Giants’ pitcher Mike Leake did it all on Sunday’s 10-3 win over the San Diego Padres.  The Giants continue to roll, as the win completes the three-game sweep of the Padres. It’s the ninth sweep of the season for San Francisco.

After a shaky first two innings that saw three runs on two triples and a home run, he settled down and got into the zone. Leake finished the days pitching 6+ innings, surrendering three runs on four hits and striking out two.

Travis Jankowski hit the lone home run for the Padres, which came in second. It was his first career home run. It wasn’t a cheap one either as he hit it to the power alley in right field, over the bricks, left of the 365 mark. Jankowski was called up last month and played in 17 games entering Sunday contest.

However, it wasn’t just Leake’s pitching that led to his first win since July 28th and as a Giant, he had a great day at the plate as well, highlighted by a three-run homer in the second inning. For Leake, it’s his second homer of the year and sixth of the season. He’s also the fourth Giants’ pitcher to go yard this year, giving the pitching staff a total of eight on the year, the most by any pitching staff since the 2006 Cubs.

Leake brought it upon himself, as he only received six runs of support in his five starts as a Giants entering, but the home run was a huge lift and turned things around for San Francisco.

“He did a really nice job and finally settled down. We know he’s a threat at the plate and helped win his own game today,” added Giants’ manager, Bruce Bochy.

The bats continued to go for the Giants, as they added to their lead, scoring two runs in each of the fifth, seventh, and eighth innings taking advantage of bad pitching and defense from San Diego.

Giants’ center fielder, Angel Pagan, had a huge day on the bases with three steals on the day.  Pagan only had six steals on the year entering Sunday but exploded with the career high. He’s the first Giant to steal three bases successfully in a game since Gregor Blanco did it on May 14th of last year against the Braves.

Bochy later added “You can really see the difference, Angel’s finally healthy”.

The Giants were unable to make up any ground on the Dodgers, as LA defeated the Diamondbacks 4-3 on Sunday. San Francisco still sits seven games back of Los Angeles in the National League West.

Sharks Prospects That Shined in First Rookie Game

By: Joe Lami

SAN JOSE, Calif.—

Around 9,000 Sharks fans showed up to SAP Center at San Jose on Saturday, as the Sharks hosted their first ever rookie game at the tank. With this move, the Sharks follow suit of many of the Canadian teams that allow fans experience to the rookie games in person.

The fans went home happy, as the Sharks beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-1, thanks to a great goaltending performance by undrafted Joel Rumple.  Rumple, who played his college hockey for the Wisconsin Badgers, earned the second star in the win as he was able to shut down the Ducks’ offensive bombardment.

A couple of takeaways to take from the rookie game are the Sharks have a few very promising prospects.

Joonas Donskoi stole the show for the Sharks, as he lit the lamp twice earning the first star in the process. Donskoi was one of the older players to play in the game, making it hard to call him a rookie at 23 years old going against 18, 19 and 20-year-olds. The fin started his professional career for Karpat of the Finnish league.  Last year, he finished with 49 points in just 58 games. His play reminds a lot of current Shark, Melker Karlsson. Karlsson came over from the Swedish league last season and earned 24 points in 53 games during his rookie season with San Jose. Donskoi has the best shot out of any of the rookies to make the Sharks this year and can very well be 2016′s version of Karlsson for team teal.

Rourke Chartier also had a great performance for San Jose. He scored on a wicked wrist shot from the top of the left circle. Barracuda coach, Roy Sommer, said after the game that Chartier was his favorite player on the ice. Chartier, just a 19-year old, could challenge for a roster spot this year. The fifth round pick from the 2014 draft is also eligible for one more season with Kelowna of the WHL does hurt his chances, however.  He scored 82 points in 58 games last year for the Rockets.

San Jose’s most popular prospect, Nikolay Goldobin, finished the game with an empty-net goal and an assist. His assist was a beauty, as he earned the helper on the Chartier tally. Goldobin made a play at the right side-wall and was able to make a cross-ice pass to the tape of Chartier, who fired it into the top left corner of the net. Goldobin is rumored to have one of the best chances for rookies to make the Sharks, but is still very young and has a lot to do to prove he’s NHL ready.

Goldobin is unyielding on the puck and has great pursuit of the puck.  He constantly moves in the offensive zone trying to create himself a lane to gain time for his great shot. He’s put some weight on, as he looks a lot bigger than he did at camp in July. However, the biggest hole in his game is still on the back end. Goldobin constantly over pursues the puck and is terrible when it comes to defensive position. He needs to learn how important position can be in the NHL. He needs to learn how to take away passing lanes rather than playing the puck when it’s nowhere near him. Luckily, last night the Sharks got away with a few of his mistakes but come regular season when NHL veterans are on the attack, they won’t get away with them. His offensive presence is outstanding, but it’s going to be his play in his own end that will keep him off of the Sharks’ roster to start the year. If he can prove he can improve his defensive game, there’s no doubt he will be a Shark in the near future.

Jeremy Roy, San Jose’s second-round selection in this year’s draft, was the last of the rookies that impressed me on Saturday. Roy did a great job shutting down the Ducks. He was constantly facing Nick Ritchie, the Ducks top prospect and Roy completely shut him down. There was one play that comes to mind, as Ritchie received the puck all alone at the blue line and would have been able to dance his way on net, but Roy got back and was able to poke the puck away. Roy had a few sneaky shots, as he is known as a two-way defenseman, but his strength is definitely on the back end. He reminds a lot of Marc-Edouard Vlasic with his play as he will be the pillar of the Sharks’ blue line a few years down the road. There is zero chance he makes the roster this year, as he is only 18 years old. It was announced earlier on Sunday that the Sharks and Roy have agreed on his three-year entry level deal.

Week One Preview: Bowman Versus Peterson

By: Joe Lami

The San Francisco 49ers kick-off their 2015 season on Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.  The game officially marks the end of their nightmare of an offseason as they can finally go onto the field and compete. The 49ers do particularly well in their season openers, as they’ve won the past four.  If they win on Monday, it would be only the second time in franchise history they’ve won five straight season openers.

The 49ers went 2-2 during the pre-season, with both wins coming at home. In their last game, the 49ers beat up on the Chargers 14-12 but didn’t play much of their starters. However, 49ers fans go to see a few players that were able to crack the 53-man roster for San Francisco. Jarryd Hayne, Shayne Skov, and Mike Purcell were the feel-good stories of the pre-season. Their job is only half done, as the next step would be part of the 46 that get to suit up on game day.

49ers’ coach, Jim Tomsula, commented about the possibility of Hayne playing on Thursday, and said that it was still up in the air. There’s no doubt that Hayne brings a great presence to the 49ers’ special teams, but there’s a lot more of Hayne’s game that needs to be worked on.

A lot of pressure will fall on Tomsula, as it will be his first NFL game as a head coach. Though talk around the 49ers hasn’t been great with the losses to their roster, Tomsula has remained optimistic and said the Niners have a great room.

On the other side of the ball, the Minnesota Vikings, come into the opener after playing the rare five pre-season games as they participated in the Hall of Fame game. They went 4-1 during their pre-season with their lone loss coming to the Titans last time out.

The main matchup to watch on Monday night will be how Adrian Peterson do after not playing in the last 15 games of the season last year due to his off the field problems.  Will he come back to his old self or will the year-long absence affect his game? In his last two full seasons, Peterson has rushed for over 3,300 yards and 22 touchdowns.  He will be face-off against 49ers’ star linebacker, NaVarro Bowman. Bowman is also playing in his first game in a long time, as he missed all of last season due to a leg injury during the 2013 NFC Championship game.

Monday will also give everyone a look to the “new” Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick didn’t play all that much during pre-season, and his numbers were not impressive, although he wasn’t given a chance to throw the ball that much. Kaepernick worked with Kurt Warner during the off-season on his throwing motion, and it will be on full display Monday, as it has been hidden during the pre-season.

The question remains, will the 49ers’ offensive line hold up to give Kaep the time he needs?

We will find out all of the answers on Monday, the first Monday game to be held at Levi’s Stadium. The 49ers have announced they will be debuting their new black alternate jerseys for the 7:15 kickoff.

Connor Casey Ruins Quakes Win Streak

By: Joe Lami

SAN JOSE, Calif.— The San Jose Earthquakes win streak ends at four, as they surrendered two goals in the last 15 minutes of the match on Saturday night losing to the Philadelphia Union 2-1.

It was a very physical match that saw over 20 combined fouls called and even more not called by referee Ismail Elfath.  There were multiple fouls that occurred in the box that weren’t called that should’ve led to penalties for each team.

The first half was fairly quiet until the 37th minute when Quakes’ defender Victor Bernardez sprained his right hamstring on an awkward play. The veteran back liner went up to head it and came straight down on his hamstring. He laid on the field for about two minutes before being subbed for JJ Koval. When asked about the injury, Quakes’ coach, Dominic Kinnear didn’t go into the extent of the injury and how long Victor could be out.

The injury to Victor ended up being crucial late in the game, as San Jose definitely missed his presence when Koval was involved in both of Philadelphia’s goals.

San Jose didn’t give up, though, as they ended the half in the 42nd minute with an outstanding chance.  Matias Perez Garcia, who was San Jose’s best player on Saturday, sent a cross from the right side almost finding Quincy Amarikwa at the back left post. Amarikwa was unable to make the acrobatic move to finish off the goal.

The physical play bled into the second half and led to San Jose’s only goal. A foul and handball in the box led to a penalty kick for the Earthquakes. Captain, Chris Wondolowski found the bottom left part of the net for his 13th goal of the season. The leading scorer on the Quakes is now tied for fifth in goals in MLS.

The lead didn’t last too long for San Jose, as Union sub, Connor Casey made an immediate impact. Casey was brought on in the 71st minute and had his first of two goals in the 74th minute. Raymon Gaddis crossed it from the right side and was flicked in between two Quakes defenders in the middle of the box to find the right corner of the net. “He’s a great player, a big force in the box, great finisher and he creates that little bit of space when he gets it,” commented Wondolowski.

Just 12 minutes later, in the 86th minute, Casey found the bottom right corner again.  On a set piece from well outside the box Tranquillo Barnetta found the top of Casey’s head as he was able to redirect it just past the diving fingertips of San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham for the eventual game winner.

“We let ourselves down tonight. We pride ourselves on set pieces on both sides of the ball. Momentary lapses cost us and that’s kind of the way the game goes sometimes,” added Bingham.

It is an upsetting way to end a dominating win streak, but it gives San Jose fire to come back next week and beat the Seattle Sounders in a huge game with playoff implications on the line.

49ers Cap Preseason Off with Chargers on Wednesday

By: Joe Lami

The San Francisco 49ers will end their pre-season schedule on Thursday as they host the San Diego Chargers at Levi’s Stadium. Although records don’t matter in the pre-season, they come into this game 1-2 on the pre-season with their only win coming against the Cowboys at home two weeks ago.

After Sunday’s loss to the Broncos, Thursday becomes a very important game for the 49ers as the 19-12 defeat brought up a lot of concerns for the red and gold.  To start, their first string offense had nothing but trouble moving the ball.  It took them three drives to get their first first-down of the game.  It also took the Niners offense the entire first half to get on the board, as Phil Dawson was able to put it through the uprights for three points.

The offense continues to be a concern this pre-season, as there has not been much to praise. Another concern came up this past weekend as well, as the offensive line had issues that begun in the point practice with Denver.  It bled over into the game, as the first string line allowed Kaepernick to get sacked twice, one of which led to a safety.  49ers’ coach, Jim Tomsula mentioned that the problems will be taking care of this week, making this week especially important.

On top of the problems that are occurring on the offensive side of the ball are the penalty problems the 49ers have been having. Last week against Denver, San Francisco was penalized 13 times totally 113 yards.  Tomsula said, “We have to get that cleaned up”.  Penalties will be another important item to watch on Thursday.

Since week four of the preseason usually means that none of the starters will really see any playing time. It will give a chance for the final 75 players remaining to earn their spot on the 53-player roster.

Some of the players to really keep an eye on that have a shot at winning their spot would include Jarryd Hayne. Hayne, the former rugby star, is rumored to have earned his spot, but Tomsula hasn’t mentioned if he’s made it quite yet. Thursday can push him over the edge in gaining a spot.

Shayne Skov could be another player trying to make the squad. After the nightmare offseason the 49ers’ defense saw and a good camp and pre-season, the former Stanford star could gain a spot.
