WEST SACRAMENTO — The A’s and Diamondbacks played game two of a three-game series on Saturday night at Sutter Health Park. The A’s couldn’t get much going offensively, and the pitching struggled, as the Diamondbacks defeated the A’s 7-2.

J.T. Ginn got the nod for the Athletics and pitched well early but ran into trouble late in his outing. Ginn cruised through the first four innings, his only blemish a solo homer in the first by Ketel Marte, but he unraveled in the fifth. He allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while recording just one out before being pulled. Ginn finished with four and a third innings pitched, giving up four runs on four hits and walking five D-backs hitters.

Justin Sterner relieved Ginn and pitched one and a third innings, allowing one run on one hit. Ben Bowden followed and gave up an unearned run after defensive miscues by Gio Urshela and Nick Kurtz. Edurniel Núñez, newly acquired from the Padres in the Mason Miller trade, entered in the eighth. Núñez cruised through the eighth but ran into trouble in the ninth. His final line: one and two-thirds innings pitched, two hits, one run, and two walks. Michael Kelly came on to relieve Núñez and recorded the final out of the ninth with a strikeout.

Offensively, the A’s couldn’t generate much against D-backs pitching. Their only scoring came on a two-out, two-run RBI double from Tyler Soderstrom in the third inning. Despite collecting 10 hits, the A’s were unable to capitalize on their baserunners. Zac Gallen and the Arizona bullpen did an excellent job keeping the damage to a minimum.

With the loss, the A’s fall to 49-64, while the Diamondbacks improve to 52-59 on the season.

The A’s and D-backs will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PST at Sutter Health Park. Jack Perkins (0-1, 2.75 ERA) is slated to start for the A’s, with Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7, 5.63 ERA) taking the mound for the D-backs.
