Giants Stay Hot, Roast the Royals 6-2 at Oracle Park

By Morris Phillips

SAN FRANCISCO–Buoyed by all their success gathered in a sweep of the Dodgers, the Giants kept their momentum going Monday night by breaking open a close game, and beating the Royals 6-2.

Alex Wood stood out, pitching six innings and allowing just four hits. He threw an economical 80 pitches and retired the last ten batters he faced, which was enough for manager Gabe Kapler, who turned to his bullpen to protect a 3-2 lead. Wood pitched with base traffic in the first three innings, but managed to keep the visitors from cashing in outside of a two-run third.

Brady Singer started for Kansas City, and Amir Garrett relieved him in the fifth, and neither seemed comfortable with Singer issuing five walks, and Garrett one to Austin Slater, who advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Thairo Estrada’s base hit that gave the Giants a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Singer issued four consecutive walks in the third, allowing the Giants to tie the game with free passes issued to Darin Ruf and Joc Pederson coming with the bases loaded, forcing in a pair of runs.

In all Giants’ batters drew nine walks, likely infuriating former catcher and Royals manager Mike Matheny. The walks in combination with the Giants five hits–four of them doubles–put the Giants in position to add on with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Relievers Mauricio Llovera, Jake McGee and Camilo Doval each pitched a scoreless inning after Wood departed with Doval picking up the save. Llovera was a gameday callup from AAA Sacramento as Heliot Ramos was sent out after another short stint with the big club.

The Giants have won four in a row, impressive in that it brings them within three games of the Dodgers and the division lead, and somehow has kept them in front of the Atlanta Braves in the wild card stack, despite the Braves winning a 12th straight on Monday. The Giants hold the lead wild card spot, significant this season in the expanded playoff field which will see that lead team host an opening round series in the postseason.

On Tuesday, the Giants and Royals play game two of a three-game set with Logan Webb, coming off arguably his most impressive start of the season facing Kris Bubic, who has an unsightly 0-3 record with a 9.13 ERA.

NBA Finals game 5 recap: Warriors Take Series Lead Beating Boston 104-94

Warriors Take Series Lead Beating Boston 104-94

By Barbara Mason

It has come down to a game five for the Golden State Warriors and while this is not mathematically a must win, the team does not want to go back to Boston trailing in the series. They won’t have to worry about that after putting away the Celtics with a ten point 104-94 win to go up 3-2 in the series on Monday night at Chase Center.

The Warriors came out with a vengeance in the first quarter leading after 12 minutes 27-16. The Warriors only had two turnovers to the Boston Celtics four and Golden State’s defense was absolutely terrific to start the game. Draymond Green had a great start and the familiar fire was back.

The Celtics started to heat up in the second quarter and it only took Boston three and a half minutes to cut the Warriors lead in half. The Celtics began to hit shots and organize putting Golden State a bit out of rhythm.

Everything that went right in the first quarter came to a screeching halt in the second quarter. In the final four minutes of the quarter the Warriors got back on track leading at the half 51-39 in this roller coaster of a game. Andrew Wiggins was the high scorer for the half with 16 points and a nice defensive effort with seven rebounds. After a slow start Stephen Curry finished the half with 10 points.

Jaylen Brown was two of ten in the half and the Warriors were doing a great job containing him. The Celtics had nine turnovers which really hurt them. Golden State had to keep the pressure on in the second half.

Boston flipped the switch to start the third quarter. They scored five unanswered baskets and cut Golden State’s lead to two points in less than two minutes. At 6:49 the Celtics had tied the game at 55. The first lead of the game for Boston came at 6:27 and the Warriors were barely hanging on in this game. Golden State was able to take back the lead, albeit a slim one, 75-74 as the third quarter came to an end.

Golden State came in with great energy in the fourth quarter and with under four minutes left in the game the Warriors had a 93-82 point lead. In game four it was the Curry show and in game five Andrew Wiggins took over with 26 points and an amazing 13 rebounds. The final was 104-94 and Golden State had taken a 3-2 series lead going back to Boston.

It was a tough night for Curry. He went 0-9 from downtown and finished with 16 points. You could see the disappointment etched on his face but his teammates rallied around him and they lifted the team to their first series lead. Klay Thompson had 21 points and Draymond Green had a great defensive game and finished with eight points.

This was the first time that Boston had lost back to back games. The Warriors put together some great quarters and when push came to shove they finished this game. The Warriors didn’t come this far just to come this far and they played like it. There were some ebb and flow moments but they rode it out to get within one game of being the world champions.

Game six will be in Boston on Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Affordable Housing will Make or Break the Howard Terminal project–

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff seen here speaking at a news conference on Wed Jul 26, 2021 is pushing for the Howard Terminal project. Schaff might have to be the go between for affordable housing at Howard Terminal and the Oakland A’s as affordable housing could be a deal breaker for a new A’s downtown ballpark. (AP News photo)

Affordable Housing will Make or Break the Howard Terminal project–

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

OAKLAND–The new Oakland A’s ballpark at Howard Terminal is loaded with enough suspense to write an Alfred Hitchcock movie thriller. An affirmative vote by the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission on June 30 would be a key step toward a new A’s ballpark in Oakland.

But there are still more hurdles ahead, one important issue is affordable housing which is included in the project and something the City of Oakland wants if the A’s build the new ballpark.

“Affordable housing is going to be what makes or breaks this project,” Dolores Tejada, lead organizer of East Bay Housing Organizations — a nonprofit advocacy coalition that’s been involved in community benefits recently told SFGate.com. The disagreement is not complicated.

The City of Oakland would like the A’s to designate 450 of the approximately 3,000 apartments, an equivalent of 15% as affordable housing on site at the Howard Terminal development. The city also wants the A’s to pay for an extra 600 affordable homes in the nearby neighborhoods.

This is according to a draft term sheet back in July 2021. The Mayor of Oakland Libby Schaaf and a number of city council-members have repeatedly said that 15% is a hard line for the project in order to move forward.

In other words, somebody will have to pay for the Affordable Housing around Howard Terminal. According to Oakland Mayor Schaaf “City Council has been very clear about the affordable housing requirements for this deal,” Schaaf told The Oaklandside back in April. “This project right now is proposed to create 3,000 desperately-needed units of housing.

15 percent of them would have to be at least deeply affordable.” The Oakland A’s have not come out publicly and said if they are anywhere close to meeting that target. The A’s have said many times they do not want to negotiate through the media.

On June 2 The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission held a public hearing on the proposed A’s ballpark and development project.

At that meeting, dozens of Oakland port workers urged members of a key state agency to reject the A’s $12 billion proposed waterfront project, as they called it a “real estate grab” that would transform the Port of Oakland into a “yuppie playground. The Commission decided against their wishes and recommended the next step for June 30.

I have not mentioned Las Vegas, Nevada, although Dave Kaval, President of the A’s still maintains that the team is working on parallel plans, to land the new ball park here or there. There are two Piñatas, but only one will be broken.

As a longtime Bay Area resident, with interests in baseball, as baseball is a great part of my career, I would like the A’s to stay here in Oakland. But I do not have a vote on this process.

Round and ’round it goes, where does this stops, nobody knows.

Preview Oakland A’s vs. Boston Red Sox: A’s hope to improve win record at Fenway Park as series starts Tuesday

Oakland A’s starter Jared Koenig who lost his first game in his Major League debut on Wed Jun 8, 2022 at Truist Field in Cobb County against the Atlanta Braves will face the Boston Red Sox on Tue Jun 13, 2022 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Oakland A’s arrived in Boston Sunday night after finishing a four-game series with the Cleveland Guardians. The A’s managed to beat the Guardians on Saturday 10-5. The A’s have lost fourteen of their last 16 games.

They find themselves in the cellar in the AL West. Their record is a woeful 21-41. However, their bats showed signs of life as they bashed four home runs in the 10-5 win on Saturday. Their hitters slugger three solo dingers in the 6-3 loss to the Guardians on Sunday.

A’s first baseman, Christian Bethancourt, has started to hit. He raised his batting average to .269. His on-base percentage is a respectable .310. He has hit four homers and driven in 15.

In fourth place in the very tough AL East, the Red Sox went 8-2 on the completed 10-game road trip. The Sox are now 32-29 for the season. Injuries, however, are starting to affect the pitching.

Starters Nathan Eovaldi and Garrett Whitlock are on the 15-day IL. Chris Sale is still not available. The Red Sox still have a very potent lineup. Their All-Star candidates include third baseman Rafael Devers, shortstop Xander Bogaerts, second baseman Trevor Story, and DH J.D. Martinez.

The Red Sox cannot afford to take the A’s lightly. The A’s play better on the road. They are 14-18 away from the Oakland Coliseum. They are a woeful 7-23 at home.

The A’s showed they have some pop in their bats as they sent seven balls into the seats in the last two games of the Cleveland series. They hope to continue pounding the ball in the hitter-friendly confines of Boston’s Fenway Park.

The A’s will send lefty Jared Koenig to the hill Tuesday night. Koenig will be making his second start in his brief Major League career. In his first outing, he made it into the fourth inning. He absorbed the loss, and his ERA is 9.00. Nick Pivetta (5-5, 3.78 ERA) goes for Boston.

On Wednesday, James Kaprielian will handle the pitching chores for the A’s. James is 0-3, and his ERA is 5.73. He pitched better in his last outing but did not get the decision. The A’s feel James is rounding back into the form he showed last season.

The Red Sox have not announced their starting pitchers for Wednesday or Thursday. The A’s starter on Thursday will be Paul Blackburn. Blackburn is 5-2 with a very tidy era of 2.31. Blackburn went eight innings in his last outing against Cleveland.

He was ahead 2-0 when he left the game. The Guardians rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth as the A’s bullpen melted down again.

As baseball fans know, anything can happen in games played at Fenway Park. Fenway has been a hitter’s paradise for over 100 years.

The A’s would love to get back into the win column and take at least two out of three from the Sox in a series that starts on Friday night. Boston would love to sweep the A’s again. As always, it should be a fun series.

On Friday night the A’s return to the Oakland Coliseum to host the Kansas City Royals for a three game series.

NBA Finals/Golden State Warriors podcast with Barbara Mason: Will Curry’s leg be up to game 5 action?; Celtics defense still a concern for Golden State

On the Warriors podcast with Barbara Mason:

#1 Barbara, how much of a concern will it be for the Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry who hurt his leg in game 3 in Boston and has he recovered well enough that he can start game 5 tonight at Chase Center?

#2 The Boston Celtics who have won two of the four games played in this tied up series 2-2 are noted for their strong defense how much pressure is on the Celtics to execute the defense and shut down the Curry and Thompson.

#3 Barbara now talk about how much pressure is on the Curry and Thompson to tally points and keep scoring down on the defensive end to a minimum to stay ahead of the Celtics.

#4 Barbara, take a listen to what the Celtics Jaylen Brown said that the Celtics are taking a lot of positives out of anything saying that the team could be in a better position but being 2-2 is nothing to sneeze about either and that the Celtics can learn from their mistakes and improve on them starting tonight in game 5.

#5 Barbara any concern before tonight’s game the Celtics have had better luck in the playoffs away from home than they have at TD Garden. Do you see any advantage for the Celtics tonight on the road in San Francisco for game 5?

NASCAR Sonoma 2022 Toyota/Save Mart 350 series: Suarez finds his groove, wins at Sonoma

Nothing fine but the wine and a win at the NASCAR Sonoma Toyota/Save Mart 350 series as race car driver Daniel Suarez enjoys a post race beverage at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma on Sun Jun 12, 2022 (AP News photo)

Suarez finds his groove, wins at Sonoma

By Tom Zulewski

SONOMA – After 194 career starts in the NASCAR Cup Series – including just two top-5 finishes in 2022 – Daniel Suarez was a driver in search of any good break he could find. When the third stage of the second road course race of the season was finished, Suarez earned his own slice of history.

Leading for 47 of the final 55 laps, Suarez won the Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Sonoma Raceway on June 12. The driver of the No. 99 Chievrolet for Trackhouse Racing earned hi s first Cup victory, became the second driver (Juan Pablo Montoya in 2007) to win his first race on a road course, and became just the fifth foreign-born driver to win a NASCAR Cup race.

Suarez beat runner-up Chris Buescher – who returned to the No. 17 car after missing last week’s Enjoy Illinois 300 at WWT Raceway due to COVID protocols – by nearly four full seconds.

“I didn’t know what to do,” Suarez said of his initial reaction to the moment after taking the checkered flag. “I’ve been working very hard for this moment not only for myself, but for my whole team. I’m very lucky to have great people around me.”

One of Suarez’ biggest supporters is his owner at Trackhouse Racing, Justin Marks. Marks had the utmost confidence that a breakthrough and celebration in Victory Lane would happen.

“Daniel checked a lot of boxes for us right away,” Marks said. “He’s an experienced Cup driver and he’s won when he’s been in position to win with his XFINITY championship (2016) and his truck wins. He’s had a chip on his shoulder and wanted to prove he belonged in the Cup series.”

When he took the lead from Buescher as Stage 3 began, Suarez was finally able to crush the chip and leave no doubt he belongs in NASCAR’s top series. The only time Suarez wasn’t at the front of the 36-car field came when Brad Keselowski led for a three-lap stretch from Lap 82 through 84.

A debris caution allowed Suarez to move back in front, and he stayed there over the final 26 laps to secure the win as his red-shirt supporters cheered loudly from the grandstands.

With teammate Ross Chastain already in the win column from the EchoPark Automotive Texas Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in March, the confidence had more than enough carryover for Suarez, who qualified 8th for the Toyota/SaveMart 350.

“We came here with a lot of road-course confidence,” Suarez said. “We didn’t have the best car today, but I felt like we made the right calls and the results showed that.”

Suarez gave additional credit to team engineer Jose Velasco, who wasn’t able to be at Sonoma due to illness.

“He called me crying,” Suarez said of Velasco, who was at home in Mexico City. “He’s a big part of this team.”

In the final stretch that gave Suarez the win, no words were necessary.

“”I just tried to stay calm,” he said. “I wanted to do my thing and didn’t want too much noise on the radio. I was controlling what I could control, and fi the caution came out, I was going to fight again.”

After Buescher, Michael McDowell finished third, while Kevin Harvick and Austin Cindric completed the top five. The race had four cautions for 14 laps, and the winning average speed was 78.008 mph.

The NASCAR Cup Series is off for Father’s Day and will return to racing June 26 at Nashville SuperSpeedway.

Giants Rodon shuts out snake bitten Dodgers 2-0 for 3 game sweep

San Francisco Giants starter Carlos Rodon throws against the Los Angeles Dodgers line up in the top of the first inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Sun Jun 12, 2022 (AP News photo)

Los Angeles (NL). 0. 5. 0

San Francisco. 2. 5. 0

Sunday, June 12, 2022

By Lewis Rubman

SAN FRANCISCO–Two days ago, one of the most unlikely scenarios in the world of baseball was that the Giants would be going for a sweep of their current three game series against the division leading Dodgers.

But that’s exactly where things stood when Carlos Rodón toed the rubber at 1:06 this afternoon against the snake bitten visitors from Chavez Ravine. The 29 year old Miami native was toting a 4-4,3.51 record for the season and was 2-2 against the Dodgers, both of his wins coming at home and both of his losses in LA.

Snake bitten or not, the visitors still were at the head of the NL West by half a game over San Diego and four and a half over the resurgent San Franciscans.

Los Angeles put their trust in Julio Urías, making this, at least at the beginning, a battle of southpaws. The Dodgers´seven year veteran started the day at 3-5, 2.78. He threw six innings of scoreless ball at them on May 3 , his only appearance against SF this year. His lifetime mark against the home team stood at 3-3, 2.41.

The two hurlers put on a hell of a pitcher´s duel, worthy of the event that the Giants were celebrating this afternoon, the tenth anniversary of Matt Cain’s perfect game of June 13, 2012. Rodón went six innings, shutting Los Angeles out on two hits and three walks.

He struck out eight and brought his ERA down to 3.18. 64 of his 98 pitches went for strikes. Urías also went six frames, allowing two runs, both earned, on home runs.

He yielded only one safety and struck out 10 without giving anyone a free pass. 61 of his 87 offerings were considered strikes. In the end, the Giants held on to an early lead and won, 2-0, to reestablish themselves as a winner in the division race.

It didn’t take long for the Giants to grab the lead. With the count at 1-2 on Austin Slater, Urías hung a slow curve, and Slater hammered it 405 feet into dead center field for his third career lead off home run. It also was his third round tripper of the season and allowed his RBI total to match his uniform number, 13. (Ironically, Urías sports number 7).

One out later, Mike Yastrzemski doubled the lead by taking a 92 mph four seamer deep to left center, 385 feet into the bleachers, for his sixth four bagger and 22nd ribby of ’22.

After Will Smith connected for a solid two base hit to left center in the second, LA fell victim to the Curse of the Lead Off Double, withUrías retiring the next six batters, three by strike outs, before Freddie Freeman walked to open the top of the fourth. Freeman was stranded at first while Rodón notched his fifth and sixth Ks.

Chris Taylor´s bouncer down the third base line put him on second with nobody out in the fifth. He almost scored from there when Hanswer Alberto hit a sharp grounder to the right side, but Thairo Estrada made a beautiful diving play to nab the ball and throw him out at first.

That moved Taylor on to third. Austin Barnes followed with a full count walk. Then Rodón got Betts to pop out to Crawford at short. The Curse of the Lead Off Double came to the rescue!

Urías was even more impressive. After the Yaz blast in the first, he retired the next 16 Giants in a row before Ruf rifled a two out double to the left field corner in the bottom of the sixth frame. The Dodger lefty recovered to close the ending by striking out Yastrzemski, his tenth K of the day.

John Brebbia replaced Rodón to start the seventh. Talor smacked his first pitch up against the 354 foot sign to the right of the Toyota ad on the left field wall for a two bagger. After Cody Bellinger popped out to a falling Flores at third, Max Muncy stepped in to pinch hit for Alberto.

He worked a full count walk to put the potential tying runs on base with Austin Barnes at bat and the top of the order lying in wait. Barnes whiffed on a 3-2 slider, bringing up the always dangerous Mookie Betts. Brebbia got him to ground into a 6-4 put out. The Curse of the Lead Off Double strikes again!

Evan Phillips took over for Urías once ¨God Bless America” and “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” had been intoned. He last only the required three batters and left with one out and Estrada, who had singled, on second and Crawford, who drew the Giants’ first walk, on first.

The new Dodger pitcher was Alex Vesia, a lefty called on to face Joc Pederson, the left handed hitter who had been announced to pinch hit for Ramos when the right handed Phillips still was on the mound. Pederson took a called third strike, but Wynn walked to load the sacks with two down.

Manager Kapler then called on Evan Longoria to hit for González, and the new three batter minimum rule prevented a counter move by LA. Nonetheless, Longoria’s fly out to deep right kept the lead at 2-0.

Now it was Dominic Leone on the hill, trying to protect that slender margen. He got past Freeman, but Trea Turner punched a single to right. Will Smith then sent a towering fly to deep right center that Slater tracked down and hauled in with a breath taking running catch.

Justin Turner slapped a dying liner to right for a single that sent the runner to third. With the tying runs on base, Leone threw a 90 mph cut fastball and got Taylor to swing and miss for the third out.

Brusdar Graterol retired Slater and Ruf to open the ninth for the Angelinos but surrendered a mighty double to the left field corner by Yastrzemski. Taylor took a terrible tumble on the play and had to leave the game but, I’m glad to say, under his own power. Bellinger popped out to third, and we went into the ninth.

Jake McGee entered the game at 1-1-,6.46, with two saves in four opportunities, to hold the Dodgers one more inning. He did it, retiring the pinch hitting Max Muncy, Austin Barnes, and Mookie Betts in order.

The win went to Rodón; the loss to Urías. The former deserved his win; the latter didn’t deserve his loss. The Giants will open a three game interleague series against the Kansas City Royals tomorrow evening at 6:45.

Early Start Equates To Early Offense: A’s fall behind and lose to the Guardians 6-3

By Morris Phillips

Right now, a matchup between baseball’s most productive hitter and the game’s least effective offense is a mismatch. That’s more bad news for the struggling A’s.

The A’s got their final look at the Cleveland Guardians and it didn’t do much to change the current state of affairs. The Guardians–winners on Sunday by a 6-3 score–are heating up, and the A’s continue to struggle, losing for the 32nd time in their last 43 games, despite ending a lengthy losing streak on Saturday. The Guardians have won 11 of 15 to plant themselves firmly in the race for the AL Central crown.

Jose Ramirez knocked in three runs for Cleveland, the first two to give the hosts a first inning lead after the A’s got a home run from Ramon Laureano. The Guardians went on to score three in the first, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to build a 6-1 lead. Ramirez leads all big league hitters with 59 RBI.

The A’s staged a late rally in the eighth with back-to-back home runs from Christian Bethancourt and Seth Brown. Sean Murphy then drew a walk, but Cleveland reliever Trevor Stephan settled down and got Elvis Andrus to fly out to end the inning.

The A’s hit the road this week after a 1-9 home stand hoping to reverse their fortunes. But through the first two stops on the roadie, they’re 1-5. The A’s have the lowest team batting average at .211 and despite hitting three home runs for only the third time this season on Sunday, they’ve hit the second fewest in baseball at 44.

“I think guys are getting more confident, taking better at-bats,” manager Mark Kotsay said. “We’ve known the power is in there for the guys that hit the home runs.”

As the A’s issues have persisted, those issues have multiplied. The team’s pitching has deteriorated with the team ERA above 5 1/2 runs over the last 28 games. Cole Irvin, Sunday’s starter allowed at least six hits in a start for the sixth, consecutive start despite settling down considerably after a rocky first inning.

However, the defense contributed to Sunday’s poor start as Andrus misplaced a ground ball hit by leadoff hitter Myles Straw. That was the A’s 41st error on the season.

Winning pitcher Cal Quantrill went six innings, allowing four hits and a run, his fifth win of the season. Emmanuel Clase pitched the ninth and struck out Matt Davidson and Tony Kemp with Chad Pinder on second base to end the game and earn his 11th save.

The A’s travel to Boston and face the Red Sox starting Tuesday with Jared Koenig the team’s scheduled starting pitcher.
