ELMONT, N.Y.—It took just 39 seconds in overtime for Erik Karlsson to score and give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 overtime win over the New York Islanders at the new UBS Arena. The Islanders suffered their ninth straight loss, while the Sharks celebrated their third straight victory on the road trip.

The Islanders got their fan base going when Mathew Barzal scored at 1:04 in the first period to take a 1-0 lead over the Sharks.But Nick Bonino answered back at 9:10 in the first period, assisted by Timo Meier and Jonathan Dahlen.

Both teams went scoreless in the second and third periods.

Karlsson gave the Sharks the win in overtime, assisted by Meier and Logan Couture. Karlsson earned his fifth goal of the season and improved to 3-0-0.

“Meier made a great play on the overtime winner,” San Jose Sharks head coach Bob Boughner said. “Our big guys that are putting the points up are guys we have to rely on every night and they delivered.”

Asked if he called for the puck in the 2-on-1 rush in overtime, Karlsson said he was screaming at Dean Morton because he did not call a penalty.

“I knew there was a chance Timo would find me,” Karlsson said. “He’s got some good vision going for himself right now. He made the perfect pass and I just had to tap it in.”

Sharks goalie Adin Hill in his first start since November 20 when the Sharks lost 4-0 to the Washington Capitals made 23 saves.

“We got it done,” Karlsson said. “It was a big win for us. Going into the game against the Rangers tomorrow is going to be an even tougher game.”

San Jose had a scary moment when forward Jonah Gadjovich took a shot to his leg by Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson. Gadjovich was down for a few minutes before he was helped off the rink and left 3:11 into the first period.

The Islanders are winless in the five games they’ve hosted so far at UBS Arena, their new $1.1 billion home adjacent to Belmont Park. They have lost eight straight games and called off some games, no thanks to several players contracting the coronavirus.

San Jose (13-9-1) continues their road trip facing the New York Rangers on Friday at Madison Square Garden. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
