The Golden State Warriors had the throw down working for them in their win over the Denver Nuggets at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Fri Apr 23, 2021 (@warriors photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors (30-30) returned home to face the Denver Nuggets (38-21) at the Chase Center. For the first time in 409 days, fans were in the seats to watch their beloved Warriors play. About 2000 fans were in the stadium. The Warriors did not disappoint them as they raced their way to a hard-fought victory 118-97.

The last time the teams met on April 12th, the Warriors stunned the Nuggets 116-107. The Nuggets lost one of their stars, Jamal Murray, to an ACL knee injury. The Nuggets were looking to exact revenge and pick up a win Friday night. The injury jinx hit the Nuggets again early in the first quarter. Will Barton had to leave the game with a hamstring injury. P J Dozier replaced him in the lineup.

The Nuggets, coached by former Warrior assistant coach, Mike Malone, had won 20 of their last 25 games. They were 11-2 since acquiring Aaron Gordon at the trade deadline from the Orlando Magic. One of the losses was to the Warriors.

The Warriors were 3-2 on the recent five-game road trip, and they were 6-3 in their last nine games. Stephen Curry set an NBA record for a 33-year-old player with 30 or more points in 11 consecutive games. The Warriors also had to figure out to contain Nikola Jokic. Jokic is in the running to become this season’s MVP. Curry is also a candidate for that honor.

The teams played a very entertaining and competitive first quarter. As mentioned early, Will Barton left with a hamstring injury. The Warriors got a scare when Curry appeared to have injured his right ankle. Curry could not run as well. He went to the bench, and the trainers attended to his injury. The Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins, Kelly Oubre, Jr., and Mychal Mulder paced the Warrior offense. The Warriors finished the first quarter leading 30-24

Curry started the second quarter. The Warriors extended the lead to 41-28. Curry made a couple of baskets to help the Warriors get ahead. Denver then went on a 12-2 run to make it a three-point game 43-40. The Warriors held off Denver to finish the first half leading 54-50.

Andrew Wiggins led the team with 14 points. had Curry seven. Mychal Mulder had nine. Kelly Oubre and Jordan Poole, coming off the bench, each had ten. Aaron Gordon led Denver with ten, Michael Porter, Jr. had nine, Jokic eight, Dozier seven, and Facundo Campazzo, from Argentina, also had seven.

The third quarter belonged to the Warriors. As they have done so many times in the past, they played well on both ends of the court. They had great ball movement outscored Denver 32-24 to finisher the third quarter with a twelve-point lead 86-74.

Curry did not seem to be bothered by his ankle, and he looked like the Curry of old. The Warriors had their foot on the gas pedal, and they finished the third period with a 19-9 run. Golden State was in control of the game. Curry was hot in the fourth quarter. He scored 25 points in the second half to finish with 32. Denver could not get anything going. The Warriors outscored them 32-23 to win by 21 118-97.

Game Notes and Stats: With the win, the Warriors are 30-30 for the year. They have won seven of the last ten games. Curry scored 30 or more points for the 29th time this year. Draymond Green had a double-double with 12 rebounds, and he tied his career-high with 19 assists. The Warriors had 40 assists on 45 made field goals. There was no question that they had no trouble breaking down Denver’s defenses as they recorded those 40 assists.

Kelly Oubre, Jr. had another great game on both ends of the court. Oubre tallied 23 points, six rebounds, and three assists. He knocked down three threes. Andrew Wiggins had 19 points, seven boards, and two assists. Wiggins connected on three threes. Jordan Poole had 15, and Mychal Mulder 14. The Warriors shot 53.6% from the floor. They connected on fifteen threes. The Warriors outrebounded Denver 58-44.

The Warriors had no answer for Michael Porter, Jr. Porter, who is six feet ten inches tall, led Denver with 26 points and five rebounds. He was seven-for-14 from downtown. The Warriors held Jokic to 19 points. Jokic had six rebounds and six assists. Aaron Gordon finished with 17.

The Warriors host the Sacramento Kings Sunday night at the Chase Center. The Kings beat the Warriors at the Golden One arena in Sacramento on March 25th. The Warriors will be hoping to avenge that loss. The game will start at 7 pm.

Wood dominant in his Oracle Park debut; Giants defeat Marlins 5-3

The San Francisco Giants Mike Yastrzemski (5) is congratulated by Tommy LaStella (18) at home plate after hitting a two run home run against the Miami Marlins at Oracle Park in San Francisco (Bay Area News Group photo)

By Jeremy Kahn

Jazz Chisholm, Jr., gave the Miami Marlins a quick 1-0 lead, but that was all Alex Wood allowed in his Oracle Park debut.

Wood went seven innings, allowing just that one run on just one hit, walking one and striking out seven and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Marlins at Oracle Park.

Chisholm, Jr., took Woods pitch and launched it over the arcade to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead after just one batter.

Mike Yastrzemski continues to break out of his early season funk, as he hit his third home run of the season, a two-run opposite blast that gave the Giants the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning.

Sandy Alcantara fell to 0-2 on the season, as he allowed two runs on four hits in five innings of work, as he also walked four and struck out four.

The Giants broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Wilmer Flores singled to center to score Mauricio Dubon.

Yastrzemski then scored his second run of the night, as he scored on a Brandon Belt singled that sent Flores to third.

Darin Ruf drove in the third and final run of the inning, as he hit a sacrifice fly that scored Flores from third.

Things were sailing, as Jake McGee came on in a non-save situation and probably struck out the first two batters; however, Miguel Rojas reached on a Flores fielding error, just the fifth error for the team and then Jesus Aguilar hit a two-run home run that was just out of the reach of Ruf in left field.

McGee then settled down, as he struck out Garrett Cooper to end the game and give the Giants their second win in as many nights.

NOTES: Last night, C Curt Casali caught his fifth straight shutout, becoming the fifth catcher in the modern era (since 1900) with at least five straight shutouts in his starts, joining: Francisco Cervelli in 2015, Chris Hoiles in 1995, Alan Ashby in 1986, Ed Phelps in 1903 (six straight). Casali is also the first to do it with five different starting pitchers, this according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Buster Posey will become the first player in the Giants’ 139-year history to catch 1,000 games…that would leave the Twins as the only one of MLB’s 16 oldest franchises (pre-1960s expansion) without a player who has caught 1,000 games, according to STATS, LLC.

All 20 of the Giants games this season have been decided by four-runs-or-fewer…according to Stats, LLC, it’s the Giants’ longest stretch to open a season since 1997 when they played 23 straight games decided by four-runs-or- fewer.

UP NEXT: Kevin Gausman goes for the series win on Saturday night, as he takes the mound for the Giants, while the Marlins will send Pablo Lopez.

It’s 12 In A Row For the A’s; Oakland’s pitching holds off Baltimore 3-1

The Oakland A’s Ramon Laureano (22) gets congratulations from Matt Olson (28) after hitting a home run and returning back to the dugout in Baltimore on Fri Apr 23, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Could Friday night reveal the Oakland A’s (13-7) 12th straight win? It’s a burning question that the team will answer in Game One of their series with the Baltimore Orioles (8-11). The Orioles in the American East sit in third place. The A’s are atop the American West along with the Seattle Mariners at 13-7. The A’s are now eight short of their franchise setting record of 20 straight wins as they defeated the Orioles 3-1 at Camden Yards in Baltimore.

The players are having the time of their lives adopting the new mantra “ride the wave”. Considering the way the team started the season, this streak is a most welcome turnaround. It’s seems that it all came together at the same time; pitching, hitting and defense. A winning combination as is evident.

It was a quiet first inning although the Orioles had two men on base that were unable to score. Cole Irvin was on the mound for the A’s and Baltimore had Jorge Lopez pitching.

The bats came alive for Oakland in the second inning. Moreland and Murphy both walked. They would score to take the early lead 2-0. Stephen Piscotty and Elvis Andrus had hits in the inning. It was three up and three down for Irvin in not only the second inning but the third as well. He was having a great outing through three innings.

After five innings the score remained 2-0 in favor of the A’s. Irvin had 5 strikeouts to his credit through five.

Ramon Laureano would hit his second home run of the season in the fifth inning to extend the A’s lead to 3-0. That was all she wrote for Baltimore’s Lopez. Travis Lakins Sr. would take over on the mound. Dillon Tate would relieve Lakins to start the sixth inning for Baltimore.

Irvin got into some trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded Severino would single to left and one run would score. With the score now 3-1 Irvin would leave the game and Yusmeiro Petit would take over in a very tough situation. Petit would put out the fire and the A’s got out of the inning giving up only one run.

Neither team threatened in the seventh, eighth or ninth innings and the A’s would go onto their 12th consecutive win. Wendelken would pitch the eighth inning and Diekman would finish off the ninth inning.

It was a slow start for the A’s but Oakland got some help from Baltimore when Lopez walked Moreland and Murphy. In the first game of the series Matt Olson, Stephen Piscotty, Sean Murphy and Andrus had hits. Ramon Laureano had the only home run in this game. With that home run the A’s are tied with the Angels for most home runs this season.

First pitch in Game Two is slated for 4:00 PM tomorrow.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Tokyo Olympics 2021 Will Not Allow Demonstrations

Tokyo Olympics 2021 Will Not Allow Demonstrations

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

2021 Tokyo logo (pininterest.com image)

IOC Rule 50 states that: “No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas. The Rule strives to ensure that the focus at the Olympic Games remains on athletes, performances, sport, unity and universality according to the IOC (International Olympic Committee).”

The 2021 Olympic Games was postponed last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but will take place this year from July 23 to August 8. For good or bad the world of sports is contaminated with politics and the world’s largest sporting stage is setting the example that sports are sports and nations should compete in sports, not on an interchange or political ideas or any-type of propaganda that has nothing to do with what these athletes have prepared for years.

The decision, by the IOC to stay the course with Rule 50, was made after 10 months of surveying/consultation with 3500 plus athletes in 41 sports that represents 185 countries in Olympic competition. The results showed “A clear majority said that is not appropriate to demonstrate or express their views on the field of play, (about 70 percent of athletes), either at the field of play or at official ceremonies or on the podium.” もういや = no more. It makes sense; I think we are all suffering from demonstration fatigue by now.

Casali, Giants dial up another shutout, Giants open homestand with a 3-0 win over the Marlins

By Morris Phillips

SAN FRANCISCO–Deceptive advertising, that’s what it is.

The Giants tout a cerebral hitting approach, a lineup of dangerous sluggers, and explosive offense delivered late in games, but when you get to the park they give you pitching, more pitching and shutouts.

Not that there have been complaints…

Curt Casali, the Giants previously unknown backup catcher signed as a free agent in January, grabbed a slice of big league history Thursday by being the starting catcher in a fifth, consecutive Giants’ shutout, 3-0 over the Marlins. The feat hadn’t been accomplished by any big league catcher since Francisco Cervelli did it in 2015, and it brings Casali within one of Ed Phelps’ (Pirates) major league record of catching six, consecutive shutouts. Only five catchers–including Casali–have achieved the feat since 1901.

But what sets Casali apart from the other notable catchers, says it all about the 2021 Giants: five different starting pitchers have participated in the streak, a first. And nine different relievers have participated in the streak, no record, but impressive nonetheless.

Simply, the Giants have quality pitching and a couple of capable engineers running the show behind the plate.

“Me and Buster have worked really, really hard behind the scenes,” Casali said. “It feels like, finally, it comes to the forefront. I’m pretty proud. Obviously l’m not the one throwing the pitches.”

The advertised offense simply needed a cameo appearance versus the Marlins, providing three runs in the first. All three runs came after the first two hitters were retired on a single, two doubles with a walk of Evan Longoria mixed in.

Donovan Solano was placed on the injured list before the game with a calf injury. Longoria departed Thursday’s game after one at-bat, due to tightness in his hamstring. And Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford are dealing with various physical issues that kept both out of the starting lineup.

That’s the entire, Opening Day infield lineup out, and everything else the Giants had to offer in, yet they still made it work. Anemic batting averages, lessened defense at the corners, a travel-weary bunch returning from Philadelphia, but fortified with a bunch of quality pitches. That was the formula Thursday and Aaron Sanchez set the tone.

Sanchez allowed two hits, no walks in five innings, and did so with the speed on his fastball noticeably lacking. It mattered little as he induced ground-based and weak contact during his stint while lowering his ERA across four starts and nearly 20 innings to 1.83.

“My velo is down, but it’s been down,” Sanchez said. “It’s about getting outs, so I don’t really (reflect on) how hard I’m throwing.”

Gregory Santos followed Sanchez with his Major League debut and 98 mph fastballs mixed with 90 mph sliders made the occasion special. Santos struck out pinch-hitter Magneuris Sierra and leadoff man Jazz Chisolm, Jr. before inducing a ground out from Miguel Rojas on a 2-2 pitch.

With Santos and Camilo Duval, who debuted last week, the Giants bullpen has two, dynamic new arms. The catch? Both are extremely inexperienced, but talented, a gap that isn’t always bridged. But in these cases, the team’s willing to try.

The Giants’ 12-7 record is second only to the Dodgers among the 30 ballclubs. Achieving that mark with only seven home dates thus far is impressive, given the Giants have only lost once at Oracle Park.

On Friday night, Alex Wood faces Miami’s Sandy Alcantara at 6:45pm.

Preview of A’s vs. Orioles in Baltimore; Three game series opens Friday

The Oakland A’s Ramon Lureano (22) swings for a base hit in the bottom of the tenth inning on Wed Apr 21, 2021 at the Oakland Coliseum against the Minnesota Twins (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Oakland A’s head East to start a six-game road trip. The A’s will play three against the Baltimore Oriole’s and finish the trip against the Tampa Bay Rays. The A’s currently reside in the American League Western Division with a 12-7 record. The A’s started the season 1-7 but have won 11 in a row. No team in Major League history has ever started the season with an 0-6 record and then had an 11-game winning streak at any time during the same season.

The Orioles have been a franchise in the American League since 1903. They were known as the St.Louis Browns for 51 seasons. Their last year in St. Louis was 1953. The Browns were doormats in the AL for many, many years. Their only appearance in the World Series came in 1944 during World War II.

They lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Browns featured a one-armed centerfielder, Pete Gray. Bill Veeck owned the team, and he sold it to people who promptly moved the team to Baltimore and named them the Orioles. Since 1954, the Orioles have won three World Series.

They swept the LA Dodgers in 1966 to win their first crown. The Orioles right-fielder was Frank Robinson. The Cincinnati Reds traded Robinson to the O’s as they thought Robinson was an old 30-year-old player. All Robinson did that year was win the AL MVP>They beat the Big Red Machine in 1970. Third baseman Brooks Robinson put on a defensive show in that series that people still remember 51 years later.

The Orioles won their last championship in 1983, downing the Philadelphia Phillies. Shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. led his team that season. Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson, and Cal Ripken, Jr. are all Baseball’s Hall of Fame members.

Things have not gone well for the Orioles in recent years. Their last appearance in a World Series was in 1983, 38 years ago. The last time they made the playoffs was in 2016. The Toronto Blue Jays met them in the Wild Card game. The Jays sent the O’s home.

The A’s have not played the Orioles since the 2019 season. There are many new faces on the team. The Orioles traded their superstar third baseman, Manny Machado, to the Dodgers in 2018 as Manny was going to be a free agent at the end of the season. Manny signed with the San Diego Padres in 2019.

Buck Showalter was gone as the Orioles manager. Brandon Hyde replaced him and was tasked with bringing the club back to respectability. Hyde replaced Showalter before the start of the 2019 season. Showalter was the last manager to take the O’s to the playoffs.

The Orioles finished last in 2017 with a record of 75-87. In Showalter’s last year as manager, Baltimore fell to the bottom of the barrel posting a record of 47-115. In Hyde’s first year, Baltimore finished last again. They improved to 54-108.

They had a new young player, Trey Mancini, to lead them out of the wilderness. Fate wasn’t kind to Mancini. Trey had to miss the 2020 season due to cancer treatment. Mancini has recovered, and he will see playing time this weekend. The Orioles finished fourth in the AL East last year with a record of 25-35.

Oakland A’s fans don’t know too much about the Orioles’ roster. They have some new players and some oldies, too. As mentioned above, Baltimore wants to move up in the Eastern Division. They shocked the baseball world by sweeping the Red Sox at Fenway Park by winning all three games. However, they have faltered since then to enter the game against Oakland with a record of 8-10.

The A’s will send lefty Cole Irvin to the mound to start Friday night. Irvin will be making his fourth start as an Oakland Athletic. He did not fare well in his first two outings. In his last game against the Detroit Tigers, Irvin pitched six shutout innings. His overall record ia 1-2 with an ERA of 4.60.

Baltimore will counter with righty Jorge Lopez. Lopez will also be making his fourth start of the season. Lopez was hammered in his first two starts. He pitched well against Texas to earn the win. For the season, Lopez is 1-2 with an ERA of 8.56.

Chris Bassitt will go for Oakland on Saturday. The Orioles have not announced their starter for the Saturday game. Righty Matt Harvey may get the call. Other pitchers that could start are lefties John Means and Bruce Zimmerman.

The A’s enter the series scoring an average of 4.74 runs per game. The A’s have players up and down the lineup that can send the baseball into the stratosphere. Their big first baseman, Matt Olson, has been scorching hot. Olson had three home runs in the last two games of the series with the Minnesota Twins.

Olson has hit six homers and has 15 RBIs so far this year. Mark, Canha, Ramon Laureano, Stephen Piscotty, Jed Lowrie, Sean Murphy, and Seth Brown have all hit home runs to help the A’s to the current 11-game winning streak.

The A’s starting rotation has done the job since the 1-7 start. The team ERA is 4.71, ranking 26th in MLB. The reason for the high ERA was the poor start in the first games of the year. The A’s beat the Twins Wednesday in a wild one 13-12. Before the Wednesday game, the A’s pitching staff recorded four shutouts in five games. A’s starters Sean Manaea, Chris Bassitt, Frankie Montas, and Jesus Luzardo have all done well recently.

The A’s Mike Fiers will be available shortly. Fiers won 15 games last season. The A’s will have to figure out who Fiers will replace. The A’s bullpen has done well, too. A’s manager Bob Melvin has used righty Lou Trivino and lefty Jake Diekman as the closer.

The Orioles will probably put these guys on the field Friday night. Trey Mancini will be at first base. Rio Ruiz will be at second, Freddy Galvis at shortstop, and Maikel Franco, the former Philadelphia Phillie, will be at third. DJ Stewart will be in left field, Cedric Mullins in center, and Austin Hays in right. Paul Severino will handle the catching chores for the Orioles.

The Las Vegas oddsmakers probably would favor the A’s to win the series. The magic of baseball, as players well know, you never know what’s going to happen. Even the lowest of teams can upset the applecart of the favored team. Jorge Lopez could pitch his best game of the year. The A’s could send him to an early shower. No one knows. That’s the beauty of baseball. That’s why they play the games.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: It ain’t over til it’s over; A’s 3 run rally in 10th keeps streak alive

The Oakland A’s Tony Kemp jumps for joy with Ramon Laureano after the Minnesota Twins third baseman Luis Arraez made a throwing error to allow two runs to score in the bottom of the tenth for the A’s win at the Oakland Coliseum on Wed Apr 21, 2021 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Jerry F:

#1 Minnesota Twins third baseman Luis Arraez’ throwing error in the 10th inning costed the Twins the game Twins leading 12-11 in the bottom of the 10th scoring Elvis Andrus and Tony Kemp for the game winners to keep the A’s long 11 game win streak alive.

#2 You know the old saying good teams come back and win ball games and the A’s have done a little of everything they’ve had some shutouts pitched but on Wednesday afternoon they sure got some offense after being down by as much as 7-4 in the third inning.

#3 The Twins Byron Buxton was busy trying to keep the Twins the in the ball game scoring two runs, three hits which included a two run tenth inning home run that put the Twins on top 12-10.

#4 The A’s in the bottom half of the tenth scratched and clawed to score those three runs when they were down 12-10 to keep their 11 game win streak alive you have to wonder if the players were surprised or not really surprised based on the confidence of the team.

#5 Jerry, the A’s have the day off today after having Monday off due to their first game with the Twins which was canceled due to Coronavirus protocol issues.
