The owners are considering voting to lock out players, if they cannot reach a Collective Bargain Agreement by this December 1. Basically they have a couple of weeks time to come to that agreement with the players union. Interesting enough, the Winter Meetings are scheduled to start just outside Washington,D.C, on December 4, and if by that time a new agreement has not been worked out, all free agents signing will be on hold.
It is known that the players want a stronger Drug Joint Agreement. Major League Baseball wants to implement an international draft. There is also the revenue sharing issue, the ever present battle between big-market and small market teams on how to spread the money around. One of our bay area teams, the Oakland Athletics obviously is very interested in this matter.
There should not be much action this Thanksgiving weekend, but both sides have been negotiating. The players annual meeting is next week in Dallas, Texas, from Monday through Wednesday.
I believe the game is as rich today as it’s ever been, mostly because television money is coming in the billions, and I do not believe that there will be a lockout. However, time is of an essence. It would be terrible if they could not resolve this prior to December, and basically would paralyze all baseball business.
In the meantime baseball fans enjoy your Turkey tomorrow.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving Day.
