Winning the National League Division Series may not be their ultimate goal, but the Chicago Cubs are one win away from doing just that.
Travis Wood was forced into the game after starter Kyle Hendricks was forced to leave the game with an injury, and Wood hit a solo home run to help the Cubs to defeat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 to take a 2-0 in the best of five NLDS.
Ben Zobrist got the Cubs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, as he singled and then Hendricks helped out his own cause with a two-run single in the bottom of the second.
Hendricks was forced to leave the game with the Cubs leading 4-2 in the top of the fourth, as Angel Pagan lined a batted ball off of Hendricks right forearm.
X-rays on Hendricks right forearm showed no damage.
Wood came on to replace Hendricks, and was able to get Conor Gillaspie to end the inning and the threat.
In the bottom of the inning, Wood became the first relief pitcher since Rosy Ryan of the New York Giants in Game 3 of the 1924 World Series to hit a postseason home run. Wood also became just the third Cubs pitcher to hit a home run in postseason play, joining Rick Sutcliffe in 1984 and Kerry Wood in 2003.
Wood also pitched the fifth inning, before giving way to the rest of the bullpen and combined for their second consecutive six-hitter.
Prior to being forced to leave, Hendricks went 3.2 innings, giving up two runs and scattering four hits.
Jeff Samardzjia could not make it to the third inning in his first ever playoff start against the team that drafted him out of Notre Dame back in 2005. In two innings, Samardzija gave up four runs and six hits.
The Giants scored their only runs of the game in the top of the third inning, as Gregor Blanco doubled in a run and later scored on a Brandon Belt sacrifice fly.
