The Dodgers rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to top the Giants 2-1, earning their sixth walk-off of the year and lowering their magic number to 7 to clinch the National League West. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Bumgarner, who allowed just one hit and struck out 10, “threw a beautiful game” at Dodger Stadium and the loss “was a shame.” “Just couldn’t hold on there,” Bochy said. San Francisco took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Angel Pagan was batting. Clayton Kershaw threw a wild pitch and allowed Eduardo Nunez to score. The Dodgers remained scoreless through the seventh inning, when Bumgarner got Puig out and pumped his fist. The two began to stare each other down and yelled, “Don’t look at me.” The benches cleared and Brandon Belt and George Lombard stepped in between the two. No punches were thrown. “There’s a lot of history of it,” Bochy said of Bumgarner vs. Puig. “They’re not going to go out to dinner.” Bumgarner didn’t return to the mound after that. Bochy said the brawl didn’t play into the decision. “We talked. I’ll leave it at that,” said Bochy, unwilling to elaborate on the conversation. Bumgarner reiterated, “I don’t think I got thrown out.” “You don’t ever want to come out of the game. At the same time, you’ve got to be smart about it,” he said. The bullpen blew it for Bumgarner in the ninth inning facing Javier Lopez, the Dodgers’ Corey Seager singled Andrew Toles to third base. Then Giant reliever Hunter Stickland came in to face Justin Turner who singled on a ground ball to right fielder Hunter Pence and Toles scored, tying the game at 1-1. Los Angeles’ Adrian Gonzalez doubled on a fly ball to Pence that glanced off the heel of his glove and Seager scored, giving the Dodgers the 2-1 victory. “We’ve got a lot of guys who are really good in the bullpen. It didn’t work out for us tonight,” Bumgarner said. Lopez said that in the last two weeks of the season, “You don’t want any game to get away, especially to the division leader.” Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw allowed one unearned run on three hits in six innings. Los Angeles’ National League West lead over the second-place Giants is now six games. San Francisco remains one game behind the New York Mets and fell ties with the St. Louis Cardinals for second place in the Wild Card standings. Asked whether he thinks the Giants will make the playoffs, Bochy said, “Of course.” “It’s a tough group out there,” he said. “I’ll never lose that confidence.” First pitch for the second in the three-game series between the California rivals is 7:10 p.m. Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.
