At the 2016 Olympics in Rio the Cuban team started with no medals the current standings for Cuba now is at two gold, two silver, and four bronze as of Tuesday night. One those two gold medals is to the credit of Cuban wrestler Mijain Lopez who trumped Turkish rival Riza Kayaalp. Lopez’ accomplishment scoring a perfect 6-0 in competition with Kayaalp. The finish for Lopez puts him in good company with former legendary wrestler Alexander Karelin a former Soviet Olympic star from the 80s and 90s.
These third world countries the athletes grow up training for moments like this under the communist system. The Cuban team used to be sponsored by the old Soviet Union and now Cuba doesn’t have the luxury or the billions of rubels to compete like the old Soviets used to under the former USSR. Cuba won some medals in Rio and they won in wrestling and the athletes some of them do very well because they’ve been doing this for so many years.
