What a great way to show his teammates that he was definitely worthy of being an American All-Star, and he was worth being traded to the first place San Francisco Giants and that is what Eduardo Nunez did.
Nunez picked up four hits, including two triples and a double, helping the Giants to a 7-1 victory over the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.
Since getting traded to the Giants from the Minnesota Twins just before the trade deadline, Nunez was 2-for-20 in a Giants uniform, including going 0-for-his last 16.
Nunez is the just second Giants player since they moved to San Francisco in 1958 to have a double and two triples in the same game. The other player was Will Clark against the Atlanta Braves on August 14, 1991.
Brandon Belt went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a home run, as the Giants put an end to the Nationals four-game winning streak.
The three extra base hits by Belt were a career-high.
It was a good night for Matt Cain once again, as he won his third straight, as he went five innings, allowing five hits. In his last start on Sunday at AT&T Park, Cain pitched five innings of no-hit ball also against the Nationals.
Stephen Strasburg, who was attempting to become the majors’ first 16-game winner went just 4.2 innings. Strasburg gave up four runs and eight hits in his shortest outing of the season.
Buster Posey added two runs batted in, as the Giants maintained their two-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers, who defeated the Boston Red Sox 3-0 at Dodger Stadium.
Hunter Pence hit a foul ball off his face in the top of the second inning. The ball bounced off the ground and ended up hitting Pence just below the right eye, leaving welt and a black eye.
