Giants in Spanish have a new home at KKSF 910AM

SAN FRANCISCO–Very good news for Spanish speaking baseball fans. The San Francisco Giants Spanish broadcast, which ended on June 30th when they played the Oakland Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum, after Salem Communications acquired 860AM Radio (50,000 Watts) and changed its format from ESPN Deportes to Conservative Talk(The Answer) now has a new home. Starting next week the Giants games in Spanish will resume on KKSF 910AM radio an Iheart radio station with 20,000 Watt (day) and 5,000 Watt (night).
This is very good news also for colleagues Erwin Higueros and Rigoberto (Tito) Fuentes, both longtime friends which also happened to work together. According to the most recent US Census in 2010, the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose Bay Area registered 1,681,880 Spanish speaking folks, that is 23.5% of the total population of the area which registered 7,150,739. That was the 2010 US Census, six years ago, so those numbers have probably gone up since then.
Both Bay Area Major League Baseball teams broadcast games in Spanish, with the Atleticos de Oakland on The A’s Spanish Radio Network, on KIQI 1010AM San Francisco and Bay Area(Flagship) KATD 990AM covering Sacramento-Stockton. KEJY 790AM Eureka and KWRU 1300AM Fresno. All five major league teams in California broadcast in Spanish Language radio. On television the Los Angeles Angels originate their telecast in Spanish on FOX Sports West, as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers on SNLA and the San Diego Padres on FOX Sports San Diego.
I thought I have seen everything in Spanish radio in the bay area, but this was the first time I have seen a regular over-the-air broadcast discontinued at mid-season. We all agree, that in radio “there is never a dull moment”, now more than ever in this super fast, text-twitter-internet world we are all part of.
