In a photo finish at the 2016 Belmont Stakes, unfortunately with far less eyes on it than in recent years. Unlike the past three years, there was no chance of Triple Crown winner and coverage of the storied race was noticeably down. Those who did tune in however saw an amazing race.
The horse dubbed Creator won by just a nose to beat out second place Destin and Lani who finished third. It was only the 4th race to end in a photo finish in Belmont Stakes history. Creator beat out the favorites Lani and Exaggerator. Exaggerator, winner of this years Preakness Stakes, kept pace for a most of the race before being passed by most of the field, finishing 11th.
Beyond the finish there would be no rubber match, and not a lot of drama. The winner of this years Kentucky Derby, Nyquist was held out of the Belmont Stakes due to high white blood cell count after catching a fever. . After American Pharoah’s Triple Crown Triumph in 2015, it seems the drought could be back on.
