TEMPE AZ–In a battle of Western Division rivals the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers(probably the favorite team in this division)7 to 3. Matt Shoemaker opened for the Halos had control problems earlier, but went total of four innings giving up just two hits and one run, walking four and striking out four. Rangers rookie Joey Gallo hit a towering home run to right field. Derek Holland started for the Texas team, the lefty gave up three hits and two runs in four innings. in front of 8,808 fans.Mike Scioscia, the longest tenured manager in the majors, on his 18th season with the Angels has not announced his starter for opening night on April 4 at Anaheim against the Chicago Cubs, but it looks more than likely-that the seven consecutive year streak of opening the season for veteran righthander Jered Weaver is over and up-coming Garrett Richards will be the Angels starter April 4th. I spoke with Jered Weaver and he told me his neck is fine.He is truly a competitor but his stuff now depends all on location, he cannot miss a pitch and get away with it, while Richards hit 100 mph on the radar with other nasty stuff and this will be his year to be “the man”in the Halos rotation.
Notes: Giants ace Madison Bumgarner missed his scheduled start today with discomfort on his left foot and also on the rib cage, but he says he might miss next start, but he will be ready for Opening Day. Dodgers horse Clayton Kershaw pitched five scoreless innings today against the Rockies, he is the only “sure thing”on that rotation and if the durable lefty ever goes down, so will the Dodgers. The Oakland Athletics now have a total of 51 active players in camp, that includes 37 players on the 40 man roster. This is the breakdown: 23 pitchers, six catchers,14 infielders and eight outfielders.,,,HohokanmStadium, once and for a long time the home for the Cubs and now the home of the A’s, the A’s and Cubs played to a 3-3 game. Jesse Hahn went three innings for the Atheltics gave up three hits no runs and struck out two…The Chicago Cubs are the most popular team in The Valley of the Sun, thereis a restaurant in downtown Mesa, “Midwest Meats”which seldom has an empty table, and it is crowded with Cubs fans, many telling me “this is our year”, and that could be true. Tomorrow the A’s host the Giants at Mesa, for an early night game at the desert, and I will be there.
