OAKLAND–The spinning wheel keeps…well… spinning in Oakland. Many teams rebuilt, but few as often as the Oakland Athletics. It is a normality for the A’s, that is the way the system works. The problem with this system is that it does not brings much stability. In 2014 the A’s where eliminated by Kansas City on a one-game playoff with their then recently acquired star, now with the Chicago Cubs, Jon Lester. The irony is that for the A’s, they rebuilt when they win or when they lose. In 2015 they finished last. so you would think they have to really rebuild. But not them. For the A’s is more an operational routine, regardless where you finish in the standings. One thing for sure, there will be more different names on jerseys for fans to buy, come April 2016.
Baseball’s winter meetings return to Nashville,at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center from Dec. 7-10. The Opryland hosted the meetings in 1983, 1989, 1998, 2002, 2007 and this year. Next year’s meetings are at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., from Dec. 9-12, and the 2017 meetings are at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront from Dec. 8-11.
Hot Stove: Two big A’s names of recent past, Josh Donaldson, just won the American League Most Valuable Player for the Toronto Blue Jays, and he is staying put in Canada, the other one Yoenis Céspedes is looking for a new team and a 4-year deal around $150 million. Céspedes is one of the most popular free agents on the block, the Los Angeles Angels are in search of a left fielder with power(since the Josh Hamilton experiment didn’t worked for the Angelinos).
The Athletics should feel at home in Nashville, during this winter meetings, since Nashville, is “A’s Territory”, the city where their Triple A team plays. There is one guy that is staying at Oakland, and that is Cy Young finalist Sonny Gray, but everybody else could have a “For Sale” sticker if the price is right. Lefty Sean Manaea looks great in the Arizona Fall League, but that again is the Arizona Fall League, he should be an interesting project, but it would be insanity to count with him on the rotation, although with the A’s they always seem to find young pitching talent, so remember that name in the world of the late ex-A’ pitcher Joaquin Andujar  and like he used to say his favorite English word: “you never know”.
What do the Athletics need? Are there any reasonable priced free agents out there? Can Billy find a bargain? This is when Billy Beane goes to work. It is like when you drive in your neighborhood car dealsership and you have seen the same six or seven cars in the front row, then one day you drive there, and they are all gone, and there is a new row of cars!
We know that the following will not be coming to Oakland: David Price, Zack Greinke, Yoenis Céspedes (although I can assure you he will not mind coming back), Johny Cueto, or Aroldins (103mph)Chapman, but there will always be opportunities. For example, the Cubs are looking for starting pitching and they would be parting ways with young position players like outfielder Jorge Soler and infielder Javier Baez, and we know the A’s need help in their infield.
I am sure we will soon be talking about a group of new Oakland Athletics. Your 2016 Oakland A’s hopefully can do better than the 2015 team, 68-94 last place team 20 games behind.
