They won the pennant in 2014 but lost the World Series to the San Francisco Giants, they left the winning run at third base in game seven against San Francisco and never stop thinking about that game. They reported to Spring Training in Arizona, with just one mission, winning it all this year, and they did. A team that came back eight times during the postseason,(tying the LA Angels who also won 8 games in the postseason, although they lost the World Series to San Francisco) and won the World Series in five games. In a previous article here I picked them to win in six games. With all the great starting pitching that the New York Mets have and will have for the future, the National League Champions could not stop the Royals. The Royals are the best definition of the word “team”.
Their great young catcher, Salvador Perez(who made the last out of the 2014 World Series) wins the MVP of this World Series. Game five was started by Edison Volquez, who previously started and won game two in Kansas City. His father passed away before he took the mound that night at Kansas City, and was told of his father passing, after that game. He left the next day for the Dominican Republic for his Father’s funeral who was 63 years old and died of heart failure. Volquez came back from the Dominican and went directly to New York on October 31st, the next day, November 1st and started the game which eventually was the clincher for the Kansas City Royals.
First title since 1985 for the Royals, a small market team that has enjoyed great success during the past few years. Commissioner Fred Manfred presented (for him the first time)the new Major League Champs with the trophy to Mr.David Glass, owner. General Manager Dayton Moore deserves a lot of credit he drafted guys like Hosmer, Moustakas, Gordon, and getting guys like veteran Designated Hitter Kendrys Morales who drove in over 100 runs, solidifying a very strong offensive team, that does not depend only on the home run but score with contact, speed and lots of determination, By mid-season GM Dayton Moore, went and got the #1 starter from Cincinnati Johnny Cueto.
The Royals could have been back-to-back World Series champions, if not for Madison Bumgarner. Their is no better bullpen in baseball that the Royals bullpen.
The Mets made six errors in this World Series, and they all cost them. The Royals walks, steal, then scores with a hit, they play amazing clutch baseball, they have great chemistry and they have tremendous confidence when they fall behind, they have a habit of coming back and winning with that great bullpen. There was a big contrast in this World Series, the solid Kansas City defense, and the flawed Mets defense. Not every year a team that deserves to win a World Series, wins it, but this year it happened.
See you in Spring Training in March 2016!
