NFL podcast with Tony Renteria: Martin and Seahawks frustrated and mad after losing four straight want a piece of the 49ers

by Tony Renteria

OAKLAND–On the podcast tonight a look at the Buffalo Bills and the Jacksonville Jaguars trip to London with a 6:30 AM PT start. We talk about how both teams prepare and get over the jag lag of traveling over the pond and the time change. The Bills who dropped to 3-3 after losing to the undefeated Cincinnati Bengals (6-0) want to get this game badly to compensate.

The San Francisco 49ers who just got by the Baltimore Ravens 25-20 last Sunday at Levis Stadium got a crucial win after losing four straight. Seattle who are frustrated and looking to get back in the win column are going to be at Levis Stadium on Sunday. The 49ers playing division rival the Seahawks who lost three straight will have their hands full on Sunday.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: Visits to New York teams won’t get the Sharks down as they prepare for LA on Thursday

by Mary Walsh

SAN JOSE–On the podcast tonight the San Jose Sharks after winning four straight drop two straight to the New York Islanders and the New York Rangers in the big apple. The Rangers who shut out San Jose 4-0 Monday night were stunned at what they ran into as Rangers net minder Antti Raanta stopped all 22 San Jose shots.

The Sharks have had some injuries with Logan Couture and his broken fibula being the latest as Couture will be out of action four to six weeks. This put some holes in the Sharks line up and Sharks goalie Martin Jones was seeing a lot of shots up front and could stop only 24 of 28.

The Sharks have to write the two games in New York off and prepare for Thursday night against the LA Kings who are coming off two straight wins and wanting some revenge after they got blown out by the Sharks in the season opener 5-1.

To tell you all about it Mary Lisa has your Sharks podcast below at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: After huge blow out of UCLA the Cardinal can’t let down for Washington

by Jerry Feitelberg

The game between the Stanford Cardinal and UCLA Bruins last Thursday night was supposed to be a barn burner but turned out to be a blow out 56-35 for the Cardinal fifth win. The Cardinal came into the game ranked 15th and UCLA at 18th. UCLA came in looking for some compensation after losing the week before to the Arizona Wild Cats but found none losing their second straight game.

Bruins quarterback Josh Rosen left with a huge disappointment after throwing two big interceptions in the game which not only changed the dynamic for UCLA offensively but the Cardinal gained confidence on defense to hold the Bruins to 35 points for the blow out. The Bruins played on Sunday the week previous and turned around and played the following Thursday night they were exhausted to say the least.

The Bruins got seven days off this week as they play at Cal this Thursday night so they should be rested for that one. The Cardinal will host the Washington Huskies and although the Huskies are 3-3 the Cardinal shouldn’t let their guard down for this one as they say in the NCAA “anything can happen on any given Saturday”.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: Political correctness in sports: a waste of time

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

photo credit google images of Washington Redskin logo

LOS ANGELES–So there are no Indians in Cleveland? No Redskins in Washington, and how can there be any Giants in San Francisco, if the average height of a San Francisco resident is 5’7″? Friends, names of teams, are just that, n-a-m-e-s. With all the real problems we have in this country, some devote their time to “correct” the names of teams because they might insult a segment of our population. This is nothing but a waste of time, using energy for the wrong reasons and taking Political Correctness to a new level.

The Redskins, who currently play at FedEx Field in Maryland, announced that they were in the preliminary stages of searching for a new home field. Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland have been named as potential sites according to ESPN.

When reporters asked Allen if he would consider changing the name of the team as a condition to securing a new home for the Redskins, he replied, “No.”

The Redskins name remains controversial. Native Indian groups, politicians, and journalists continue to condemn Allen and team owner Dan Snyder for their unwavering commitment to keeping it as the team’s identity.

Maybe this continues because the Washington Redskins play in our nations capital, and everything there is political, lobbyist probably have focus groups to tell them where to go to lunch everyday. The media has a lot to do in keeping this narrative going. I have worked in newsrooms where on a slow day, an assignment desk supervisor would send a camera crew and reporter to a location where there are 6 people demonstrating, and all-of-a-sudden it is a story., it is inserted in the rundown for the 6PM news. Politicians are famous for debating stuff that nobody cares, and then when they agree, then they agree to disagree and the world keeps spining, and Native Indian groups (among other minorities)definitely have much more important issues to take care of than the name of sports teams.

So before we repair our bridges and roads across the country, which are badly in need of repair, we are going to try to change the names/logos of hundreds of high schools and colleges and universities that are not “politically correct”to some people?

Speaking as a minority myself, I do not believe in insulting anybody, any race, any gender. any religion, any philosophy, but this has to stop if we really want to continue as the “United”States of America. There are people that love to divide us, instead the other way around. Sports is an easy target, but it should not be an arena for these types of discussions.

Remember the movie “Stripes” when the young soldiers were telling their stories of each other, there was one guy that was as up-tight as they come, they have to tell him “ease up Francis”.

We should all “ease up”and we will be better for it.

Raanta stalls Sharks in New York

By Pearl Allison Lo

~ The backup goalie won in this game, as Antti Raanta made his Rangers debut with 22 saves, in a skid-ending game, 4-0 Monday.

Raanta became the first to have a shutout debut for the team since Marcel Paille on November 2, 1957.

New York ended their three game losing streak, while San Jose lost two straight for the first time this season.

Marc Staal and Jesper Fast each had a goal and assist. All were their first of the season. In fact, three of the four goals were the first of the season for the scorers.

The Rangers scored in each period, as they amassed double the number of goals they had during their losing streak.

Staal started the scoring at 10:36 of the first period. He was aided by Derick Brassard and Fast.

New York doubled their lead in the second. Mats Zuccarello scored on the power play, helped by Rick Nash and former Shark Dan Boyle. It was Zuccarello’s fourth goal, as he tied teammate Oscar Lindberg for the team lead.

Both the third and the fourth goal in the third period started in the Rangers’ end.

The puck went off the boards and Chris Krieider made a long pass up the ice to Fast, who true to his name, was the closest player to goalie Martin Jones at the time. Defenseman Brenden Dillon tried with his stick, but was not able to stop Fast from making the shot. The puck initially hit Jones’  stick and then went under his legs while he was sprawled out at 3:47. Keith Yandle got the second assist.

For the fourth and fnial goal, San Jose had a 4 on 2, but Staal broke up possession and the puck went to Viktor Stalberg, as he went five hole against Jones.

Game notes: The Sharks went 0 for 2 on the power play. San Jose’s Bryan Lerg played his first game in place of Ben Smith. It was Jones’ first loss, as he stopped 24 of 28 shots. The Sharks’ Paul Martin missed his second straight game and Joonas Donskoi was also out due to injury. San Jose now returns home to host the Kings on Thursday at 7:30pm.

Sacramento Kings podcast with Charlie O: Don’t expect to see Mayor at any Kings presentations in the near future

by Charlie O Mallonee

SACRAMENTO–Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive has not come out with a statement regarding the sex scandal involving Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and how the Kings will proceed with the very man who helped keep the Kings in Sacramento and who was instrumental for the Kings construction of their new arena downtown which is still the $100,000 question.

The whole situation of that dynamic really changed when ESPN backed off the 30 for 30 series doing a bio on Johnson and his success on pulling off keeping the Kings in Sacramento. ESPN said their not going to show the film until more information on the sex scandal comes forward confirming that has Johnson accuser Mandi Koba at age 16 in a 1996 video who said that she was sexually molested by Johnson when he was playing for the Phoenix Suns at that time. Johnson has since monetarily settled with Koba at that time but Koba said she was 16 then and now is old enough now to come out and tell all that happened.

Charlie O has the entire commentary of how the Mayor and the Kings plans to move forward regarding this sex scandal plus coverage of the Kings getting ready for the regular season. Listen to the podcast below.

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal puts Utah behind them getting ready for UCLA this Thursday

by Morris Phillips

BERKELEY–With the Cal Bears (5-1) losing to a team of the Utah Utes (6-0) caliber and that being their only loss it’s still a sizable game for Cal coming close but losing it 30-24. If you lose it to a legitimate top five team on the road it really doesn’t take you out of the Pac 12 Championship, the Pac 12 North Championship, the Championship game, the BCS game, the national championship picture with the top four teams.

Obviously the Utes would have to lose somewhere along the lines and Cal would have to beat them in the championship game later on in December. That was an important development that Utah would continue to win and to keep the spotlight on themselves and also the league itself. With Cal up next is UCLA (4-2) this Thursday night and the key for them is to jump on back and keep them reeling. The Bruins were beat up at Stanford (5-1) last Thursday night 56-35.

49ers bounce back, get past the Ravens for their first win in over a month

patton celeb

By Morris Phillips

Colin Kaepernick passed for a career-best 225 yards and a touchdown in the first half, and the 49ers held on for a 25-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens Sunday.

No Super Bowl XLVII, but you could term it the Super Bowl of 1-4 teams, a pair of flawed squads desperate to escape their current circumstances at almost any cost. For the Ravens, that passion was personified by two hardened veterans, Steve Smith Jr. and Justin Forsett, lifting themselves off the injury report and into the starting lineup knowing the paper-thin Baltimore lineup wouldn’t stand up in their absence.

And for the 49ers, looking for the first win in over a month, that passion to win meant taking advantage of a familiar face, even if that guy was Shareece Wright, a teammate just 10 days ago.  Wright was released just days after he went public with his dissatisfaction over lack of playing time.  On Sunday, while wearing a Ravens uniform, Wright got his wish.

Leading 6-3 in the second quarter, Kaepernick found Torrey Smith streaking down the far sideline—with Wright trailing—for a 76-yard pass play that gave the 49ers their first double-digit lead since Week 1.  Then in the second half, Kaepernick bought time, stayed in the pocket, and spotted Quinton Patton for an easy 21-yard pitch and catch.  On that touchdown, Wright was again the primary defender and he slipped and fell near the goal line just as Kaepernick released his throw.

Coming in, Wright supposedly announced that he would reveal 49ers’ tactics that would help him and the Ravens get a win at Levi’s Stadium.  Instead, it appeared the 49ers had a plan for Wright.

“I think being around any player, you pick up on their tendencies,” Kaepernick revealed when asked if the game plan had an extra wrinkle for Wright.  “You pick up on what you can take advantage of.  There were a couple things we thought we could take advantage of, and we did.”

On both plays, Kaepernick showed his growth that started in the Meadowlands last week in the tough loss to the Giants.  Hitting the deep ball had been the quarterback’s major flaw, but against the Ravens he connected with fullback Bruce Miller for 52 yards and Anquan Boldin for 51.  On the touchdown to Patton, Kaepernick stayed in the pocket and made a play downfield to what he said was his third option.

And most importantly, Kap got it going early, before the boo birds and the doubt could surface.

“Early on, we wanted to get the ball out of Kap’s hands, just let guys have one-on-one situations where we can make plays,” Boldin said.  “Kap did a great job of seeing the field, giving guys opportunities.”

While the Ravens secondary banged up and vulnerable, the 49ers found themselves in a rare situation where their defensive backs weren’t served up as the San Francisco treat.  Since, trading the expensive Boldin following their Super Bowl win nearly three years ago, and then losing Torrey Smith in the off-season, Baltimore hasn’t had enough downfield threats to compliment high-priced signal caller Joe Flacco.  That made Steve Smith’s availability a critical component to Sunday’s game, and the 14-year veteran somehow made it a go.

On Friday, Smith told the Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec that he wouldn’t be able to go on Sunday as a result of the painful microfractures in his back.  The injury suffered against the Steelers forced Smith to miss Baltimore’s last game against the Browns.  But on Sunday, Smith was in the lineup and involved in two critical plays, one he wished he could have back, and another he won’t likely forget.

With the Ravens driving and looking for their first points early in the second quarter, Flacco found Smith in the end zone on a third-down pass play, but the pass slightly behind Smith was bobbled, then dropped.  A catch would have given the Ravens a 7-6 lead, instead they would trail for the entire ballgame.

In the third quarter, Smith appeared to be tightly covered by rookie Kenneth Acker, but came up with an amazing 34-yard catch in the corner of the end zone to trim the 49ers’ lead to 19-13.  Acker immediately complained that the veteran receiver pushed off, but a replay showed how subtle that push was on the fast moving play.

Forsett, who didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday due to an ankle injury, also made it a go, producing over 100 yards of offense on the afternoon.  But despite the heroic performances by Smith Jr. and Forsett, the 49ers held on.

Flacco threw 53 times on Sunday, but misfired on 20 of those and was picked twice.  Acker found himself all alone deep when Flacco gifted him with a ball that he returned 45 yards.  Earlier, Flacco was picked by linebacker Michael Wilhoite.  But what was he thinking on that deep ball picked by Acker?

“I was looking to hit the shot over the top,” Flacco explained.  “I was hoping to buy time on the play and it got to the point where I didn’t see anyone open so I was just trying to throw it away.  I didn’t see anyone down the field, but it ended up being a really dumb play.”

The 49ers won for the first time in over a month, on a day that both Arizona and Seattle lost.  As a result, the 49ers and Seahawks enter Thursday’s big meeting with identical 2-4 records.  The Cardinals, still leading the NFC West at 4-2 maintain a 1 ½ game lead over the idle Rams.  Could the 49ers growth pattern extend for another four days, and against the two-time NFC Champs?

“We’re gradually picking up momentum.  We’re playing better and better.  It’s something that we have to continue,” Kaepernick said.

“We need this win on Thursday.”

FRYS.COM OPEN: Playoff win for Grillo caps off crazy final round

By Jeremy Harness

NAPA – After missing a three-foot putt, it is very tough to come back and re-focus in a short period of time. But that’s exactly what Emiliano Grillo needed to do for his first PGA Tour win on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Argentine came back from two strokes behind – as well as the aforementioned short-putt miscue on the first playoff hole – and beat Kevin Na on the second playoff hole to win the Frys.com Open at Silverado, the opening event of the 2015-16 PGA Tour season, with only a half-hour of daylight to spare.

“There are no words to explain this,” said Grillo, who became a member of the tour five weeks ago with a win in the Web.com Tour finals. “This is the greatest moment of my life golf-wise. It’s been an incredible journey in the last five weeks.”

He was in perfect position to win it on the first playoff hole, after stuffing his pitch shot to three feet while Na was faced with a daunting 50-footer. However, he missed the short putt to give Na, who two-putted for par, a reprieve.

“I hit a perfect putt; I don’t know why it didn’t go in,” Grillo said. “My caddie asked me (if I was) 100 percent, and I said yes. I want to win it.”

Na, meanwhile, failed to capitalize on the second playoff hole. After finding the fairway, he chose to hit his driver from the short grass – the biggest risk-reward shot as there is in golf – and ended up mis-hitting the shot and hooking it behind a tree, leaving him an almost-impossible up-and-down for birdie, which he did not convert.

Grillo took advantage of Na’s mistake and hit his approach shot to about four feet. This time, however, he drained the putt to take the title.

“I hit probably five or six drivers off the deck this week, and I hit it perfect every time,” said Na, who missed his opportunity to collect his second PGA Tour win. “The driver is the only club that’s going to get me far enough right, past the front, where I can have an aim to win.

“The only thing is it was dark, and the ball was above my feet.”

The victory capped off a crazy day at the top of the leaderboard. As Grillo got to the 18th-hole, there was a five-way tie for the lead at 14-under par, but he broke that deadlock by draining a 45-footer for birdie. Na, who played directly behind Grillo and saw the brief celebration, then responded by getting up and down for his own birdie to set up the two-man playoff.

At the start of the day, there were 11 players within two shots of the lead, and by the time the final pairing of Brendan Steele and Andrew Loupe reached the turn, the logjam that was the top of the leaderboard got even more crowded.

Grillo, playing two groups ahead of the leaders, picked up three shots in the first six holes to vault into the lead at 15-under. However, he dropped a shot at the par-5 ninth but got it right back at the 10th before offsetting two bogeys with a pair of birdies, including the bomb at the 18th to put him in the playoff.

Meanwhile, Justin Thomas, who was three strokes back going into Sunday, made a climb of his own and closed to 14-under and almost made a 40-footer at the 18th that would have put him in the playoff with Grillo and Na.

Tyrone Van Asweg started the day four shots back and almost was not able to play due to what was later diagnosed as severe dehydration and vertigo that morning. He was taken to the hospital and was in the emergency room an hour before his scheduled tee time.

“Thank goodness there was a slight fog delay, and that gave me an extra 20 minutes to get here, (put) clothes on, try and get some food, and (get) on the practice tee,” Van Asweg said.

Despite all of that, he didn’t seem to miss a beat once he put a club in his hands. He roared right into the mix with a four-under 68, a round which saw him pick up two shots on the front nine and two more on the back, including a birdie at the par-5 18th to finish at 14-under.

The leader heading into Sunday was Steele, who bogeyed the third and fourth holes but got both of those shots right back when he chipped in for eagle at the par-5 fifth. He then birdied the 10th hole to grab a one-shot lead.

That would not last long, however. His tee shots, which had regularly found the fairway throughout the week, began to go wayward and ended up costing him. Errant drives on holes 12 and 13 resulted in bogeys that dropped him to a stroke off the lead.

It only got worse for Steele, who never regained his momentum and ended up finishing with a four-over 76. This has been a common theme for Steele, who averaged a score of 71.26 in the final round last season.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: SJ Sharks celebrate 25th anniversary

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

SAN JOSE–The 2015-16 National Hockey League season just got under way, and the NHL team for the Bay Area, the San José Sharks are celebrating their 25th Anniversary. Hard to believe, this reporter covered the Sharks even since when they were building their current home SAP Arena in San José, and while they where playing their very first games of their history at the Cow Palace in Daly City. I remember when I was working for Telemundo 48 in San José, reporting from the construction site where the SAP Arena where it is today, and also covering their first game at the Cow Palace, and also their first game at their new arena in San José 25 years ago. A lot has happened during the past 25 years.

History tells us that the San José Sharks were the first NHL franchise in Bay Area history since the California Golden Seals, which -by the way- moved from Oakland to Cleveland in 1976. One of Sports Radio Service’s own, Mr. Len Shapiro has followed the hockey scene in the Bay Area longer than anybody I have known. Len was the assistant Public Relations man for the California Seals, and then the Public Relations man for the last two years in Oakland. Len covered the team 1967-1973 for KPEN radio in Los Altos.

The California Seals were part of the “Second Six”when they joined the NHL in 1967. They played through the end of the 1975 season and the last game was on April 4, 1975 as they beat the Kings. The next team in the Bay Area was the San Francisco Shamrocks and they played at the Cow Palace from 1977 to 1978. They won the PHL title in their first season 1977-78. Wayne “Moon”Rivers was the coach. The next segment of hockey history was the NHL exhibition games played at the Cow Palace and Oakland Arena from 1984 to 1992. The key game was played in 1988 when Wayne Gretzky was traded to Los Angeles. “We had the Kings scheduled to play the Red Wings and we sold out the game in 90 minutes”said Shapiro, today one of the great historians of hockey in Northern California, who continues “The NHL noticed and so did former Seals owner George Gund, who owned at this point the Minnesota North Stars, so when San José got it’s act together and built an arena, the National Hockey League then awarded San José a team”

Like Len says “today 25 years later hockey has a strong hold in Northern California”. It was because of people like Len Shapiro with their knowledge of the game of hockey, his passion and perseverance in promotion of the game of hockey that now the Bay Area enjoys an NHL franchise like the San José Sharks and thousands of fans crowd the SAP arena during their games. In my book he is truly a Pioneer in hockey for Northern California and Len deserves the recognition.

The San José Sharks are celebrating their 25th year in the Bay Area with numerous promotions. The team also extended their commitment to broadcasting all their games on KFOX 98.5FM radio with Dan Rusanowsky at the mic member of the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. While multiple Emmy Award winner Randy Hahn provides all the action on Comcast Sportsnet California.

Congratulations Sharks on your 25th Anniversary and the best of luck trying to bring home their first Stanley Cup.

(Thanks to Len Shapiro, who was there from the very beginning of professional hockey in the Bay Area for his collaboration)
