The Kansas City Royals are leaving little doubt about being the dominating team, the Royals  jumped on the New York Mets with early leads and they did so in big hitting fashion with a 7-1 six run game two victory on Wednesday night. The Royals take the two game lead back to New York and the pressure is all on the Mets to get back into the fray but it’ll take a lot of catching up to do.

Game one took 14 innings on Tuesday night in the Royals 5-4 win on an Eric Hosmer sacrifice fly to right that scored Alcides Escobar from third for the winning run in the 14th. The win set the Royals confidence in motion and they rampaged the Mets in game two with the six run win. Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez had a great outing in game one going six innings, six hits, three runs, three strike outs.

Unfortunately for Volquez he found out about his father passing away in the Dominican Republic after game one. Volquez’ father passed while Volquez was pitching game one at age 63 he died of heart failure. Volquez left immediately for the Dominican right after the game  to be with his family.

NHL Podcast with Joe Lami: Canadiens win streak stops at nine; Caps Ovechkin goes for all time goals by Russian NHL player; Preds-Sharks part of the rivalry package on NBCSN

by Joe Lami

SAN JOSE–On the NHL Podcast today the Vancouver Canucks ended an amazing streak by the Montreal Canadiens defeating them 5-1 the Habs streak was stopped at nine. Was the Habs feeling the pressure and pressing? Or were the Canucks just out for blood and wanted to stop the Canadiens at every turn.

The Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin is close to setting the all time goal scoring record for an NHL Russian player. Ovechkin currently has 480 career goals and Sergei Federov is leading by three with 483 all time goals.  Also the Nashville Predators get set with their key players James Neal, Craig Smith, Flip Forsberg, and Roman Josi as the Preds face the Sharks at SAP Center in San Jose on Wednesday night.

The LA Kings are swinging the sticks and finding the back of the nets as they have now won six straight games. That win streak is a testimony which holds true after a rather weak start. The Kings are getting great offensive help from Jeff Carter, Tyler Toffoli, and goaltender Jonathan Quick.

Joe talks on these subjects and much more on the NHL Podcast at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca: Blue and Gold Scrimmage tips off on Friday night at Haas Pavilion

by  Michael Duca

BERKELEY–On the podcast we discuss Cal Bears basketball getting ready for training camp for the Annual Blue and Gold Scrimmage this Friday night at Haas Pavilion. Despite the fact that you can actually buy season tickets for as low as a couple hundred dollars for 19 home games.

This is your one and only opportunity to see the team up close and personal free. It’s starts at 9:00PM the doors open and the scrimmage starts at 10 pm. 9-9:30 pm the team will be signing autographs in the Pavilion Club Room on the first level. It’s just one of those opportunities to see the guys get going against each other.

With Cal basketball you never know what your going to see and I must remind you when I was a young lad there was a player at UCLA known as Lew Alcinder and he was asked who was the best center who he played against in college and he said Steve Patterson. Patterson was his back up that Alcinder faced in scrimmage all the time.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: The changing world of sports coverage

by Amaury Pi Gonzalez

photo credit google abc wide world of sports screen shot

Do you remember: “Spanning the Globe to bring you the constant variety of sports, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat” -ABC Sports(1978) The “Spanning the Globe” part is now more a distant memory in the High-Tech 2000’s for announcers. Why should anybody have to “Span the Globe”when you have it in the palm of your hands on a 3 inch screen.

There was a time when radio stations and/or television stations would travel their announcers, directors, producers-engineers. to the actual locations where a specific sporting event was taking place, i.e. the World Series. That is happening less and less these days. Many broadcasting outlets chose to do the games from a specific location(studio)in front of a television-monitor, therefore the only thing the company will have to pay for is the talent and technical fee to their staffs, saving the traveling,transportation,hotels,per-diem and other expenses. A few years ago at the Oakland Coliseum,  a well known television sports-journalist, with a small camera and a laptop in the press box. He told me he is producing, filming and hosting a report.  Year’s ago that was at least a job for three different people.

To be fair, newspapers(a dying breed today)have used even stricter measures to save revenue, and today only the large daily publications sent their writers to the actual cities where the events are happening.  Many newspapers just pick up the stories via AP(Associated Press)which they subscribe to, when in the past they would send -at least-one sportswriter to cover the event. When newspapers were thriving, some sent a beat writer and a columnist. Today that is a “luxury”reserved to The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, and maybe a couple of more that still are at least breaking even if not losing money. Making money in print media today is like going fishing for Salmon in the Sahara Desert.
The NHL season got under way just a couple of weeks ago, and one of the richest teams in the league, the Toronto Maple Leafs, do not travel their announcers. For awhile  now the postseason and World Series of baseball, Spanish broadcasts, have not traveled. They would call the games from a studio, in Miami in front of a television monitor and send the feed all over the US and Latin America.  When you see the banner on the screen,in the first inning of each World Series game,on FOX that reads: Spanish Broadcast Available/SAP; the announcers are in Los Angeles while that game you are watching is in Kansas City or New York. There are more teams now that broadcast in Spanish that do not travel their announcers anymore for many road games. I have heard all kinds of “reasons”, like:  “well Wrigley Field is very small, they told us there is no room for us to do the games there, so we rather re-created the game from our studios”. No kidding. In all fairness, sometimes that is true, especially these days when you have coverage from reporters from all over the world and in different languages. The other side of that argument is that technology is such today, that you do not need four trunks of equipment to do a broadcast, like in years past.
The 2002 World Series between the Angels and Giants,  while at Anaheim, I broadcast from a booth separated by a curtain and four different radio outfits who were doing the games
The more and more this is done, the more and more outfits are doing such “productions”, always with one thing in mind, -and one only: to save money. Anybody that has been in this business would tell you: so, what else is new? In sports, the legitimacy of an event is enhanced when that event is covered on the premises where it is happening, not 2,500 miles away inside an air conditioned/or heated(depending the season)studio. While I have done away games in baseball from a broadcast booth and from a television in front of me, I have not worked postseason/World Series games that way.
As a matter of fact the last two times the New York Mets were in a World Series prior to this year, I was part of their history. In 1986 for the old CBS Radio Network they sent me to New York and to Boston, it was a great series, and the last time the Mets won it. In 2000, I was at the last “Subway Series”in New York, the Mets against the Yankees, won by the Yankees, that time for LBC(Latino Broadcasting Company).
We in this business, should not be ungrateful of what we have today, as it may be, because not far away there will be a day where robots will broadcasts games, when there will not be a need for umpires, referees, review guys and official scores would be out of those jobs. In most baseball parks today, there are 45,000 fans, they are all filming the games with their electronic gadgets. I remember a time when I was covering a game, as a reporter, not doing the live play by play, and I had to sign a disclaimer which said It was prohibited for me to film the event or send live radio reports during the game.
A few years ago at Opening Night of a baseball season at Oakland, I met a very enterprising young lady that was assigned as our producer on the radio broadcast. She told me and my broadcast partner she went to school at Villanova, where she got a degree in Social Media. This was the first time I ever heard there were degrees in Social Media. But this is it. When was the last time you wrote a business letter?  Did you ever get a text and not a telephone call from your son, or daughter? There is a new car already that drives by itself, you just sit and watch the road.  There is an “old”car that parks itself, try that in California Street going up the hill in San Francisco, and see how you like it. Less and less people talk to themselves anymore, when was the last time a tourist asked you: “can you take a picture of me and my wife here?” No need for that, you can now take a selfie. How many people say they want their privacy, then they go on FACEBOOK and tell you:  “this is me and my new girlfriend, we are here at the Shreveport, Louisiana, airport taking a flight to New York”.
I hope you like this article, which today and according to the Oxford Dictionary is one of the new words in the English language; it is “awesomesauce”, which means something good or excellent.
See you later dude, I have to Span the Globe.

Warriors raise championship banner, drop Pelicans in season opener

By Joe Hawkes-Beamon

OAKLAND, Calif — Talks of a championship hangover for the Golden State Warriors were quickly put to rest behind Stephen Curry’s 40 points, leading the reigning NBA Champions to a 111-95 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans Tuesday night to begin their title defense.

Curry was blistering hot in the first quarter, knocking down seven of his first nine shots, including four 3-pointers, en route to 24 points in the opening period. The Warriors point guard finished 14 for 26 from the floor, with seven assists and six rebounds for his 10th career 40-point game.

The Warriors raised their championship banner and received their rings in a pregame ceremony. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who is out indefinitely while recuperating after offseason back surgery, was on hand and got a huge roar from the sold out Oracle Arena crowd. Assistant coach Luke Walton is serving as interim head coach until Kerr returns.

“This is an unbelievable day,” Curry said. “We would not have been able to do what we did last year with your guys’ support.”

Andrew Bogut had 12 points and five rebounds before leaving the game in the third quarter with a right eye laceration following an inadvertent headbutt from Pelicans forward Dante Cunningham. Bogut was already wearing a protective face mask after breaking his nose during the preseason.

Festus Ezeli chipped in 13 points off the bench, while Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green combined for 18 points on 6 for 24 shooting. Earlier in the day, Barnes and the Warriors broke off talks for a new contract extension but left on “amicable terms” according to Warriors GM Bob Myers.

Golden State never was really threatened by the Pelicans, building a 10-point halftime lead and never looked back. The Warriors dominated the Pelicans on the boards, holding a 56-33 edge.

Anthony Davis, who terrorized Golden State last season, shot just 4 for 20 from the field finishing with a team-high 18 points. Golden State played great defense on the Pelicans center, who scored the majority of his points from the free throw line (10 for 15).

Ish Smith scored 17 points and dished out nine assists for the Pelicans, who had just nine players in new head coach and former Warriors assistant coach Alvin Gentry’s debute. The Pelican were without stars Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holiday and Omer Asik.

Curry had the second-most points by a reigning MVP in an opener since 1963-64, according to STATS. Milwaukee’s Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored 41 on Oct. 13, 1972, against Phoenix.

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Bears need to get back on track after dropping two staright

by Morris Phillips

photo credit google images cal bears logo

BERKELEY–Once again and we say it every week it’s back loaded the Cal Bears (5-2) started this season with easier opponents and now their the gauntlet. The least imposing opponent that they will face this season will be Oregon State Beavers (2-5).  Despite the loses by the Bears the last two weeks  there are more formable opponents like USC (4-3) and Oregon (4-3) coming up.

It’s not just the kind of schedule that your going to have time to feel sorry for yourself  and give Cal credit quarterback Jared Goff and other players said the right things after the game last Thursday against UCLA that they would be ready next week and hopefully that’s the case.

The Bears needs to get back on track and get some wins or it’s not Cal football and the road to the bowl game and it’s Cal football the precursor to the Cal basketball season. The Bears are hopeful that the second scenario is not the case but Cal fans can change their interest quickly if things go south.

by Jerry Feitelberg

PALO ALTO–Washington State Cougars (5-2) Wahzoo to all the graduates out there. The Cougars won a squeaker over Arizona on the road they beat them 45-42 and as you know Mike Leach is the head coach for Washington State. Leach has had a very successful career at Texas Tech.

When Leach was at Tech he had ten bowl bids and in ten seasons when he was a Texas Tech 2000-2009. Then he went over to Washington State and it looks like he’s got them on a winning program this year. It may not be as easy for Stanford (6-1) going into Pullman on Saturday as people might think.

The Cardinal are going for their seventh win and their going for their fifth straight Pac 12 win they’ve won six straight overall. The Cardinal over the weekend played a good Washington Husky team and they beat them 31-14 at the stadium. The Cardinal Christian McCaffrey is something else. He racked up 369 all purpose yards last Saturday.
