Offense no where to be found

PITTSBURGH-With newly acquired Marlon Byrd on his way here, the San Francisco Giants offense once again no where to be found.

Aramis Ramirez got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first inning, as he doubled in Sterling Marte for the only run that the Pittsburgh Pirates would need on their way to a 4-0 victory over the Giants before a crowd of 36,671, the 19th sellout of the season at PNC Park.

Jung Ho Kang added another run in the bottom of the third inning, as he doubled in Marte, who reached in his second consecutive plate appearance.

Neil Walker put the finishing touches on the scoring, as he hit a long two-run home run into the right field seats.

Jake Peavy was the unfortunate losing pitcher, as he went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out five.

Peavy’s counterpart on the mound, Charlie Morton pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out eight.

This was Peavy’s first start versus the Pirates since the 2009 season.

Prior to the game, the Giants made a trade and Byrd was acquired by the Giants from the Cincinnati Reds.

“With Hunter getting hurt, even though we have been in contact with a number of options, it really sped up the timetable,” said Giants General Manager Bobby Evans.

Byrd was traded for minor league pitcher Stephen Johnson. The Giants will be the ninth different team for Byrd, and that includes the Philadelphia Phillies on two different occasions.

“He can still cover good ground,” Evans added.

Also as expected, the club placed Hunter Pence on the 15-day disabled list retroactively to August 18 with a strained left oblique, and Nori Aoki was activated from the seven-day concussion list.

Brandon Crawford saw his career-high 13-game hitting streak come to an end, as he went 0-for-3 on the night.
