Stanford rolls over Texas Southern

The Stanford Cardinal won their fourth game of the year to start the Progressive Legends Classic by beating the Texas Southern Tigers by a score of 97-71. The game was close for the first half but the Cardinal blew the Tigers away in the second half. Below is a summary of the format of the Legends Tournament and the game.

Progressive Legends Classic Format
Stanford is participating in the seventh annual Progressive Legends Classic, which gets underway with Stanford, Houston, Pittsburgh and Texas Tech hosting regional round games this week. The eight-team event, which also includes Howard, Lehigh, South Dakota State and Texas Southern, will be aired on the ESPN family of networks and wraps up next week with the championship rounds at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Following Thursday’s meeting against Texas Southern, Stanford will face Houston (Mon., Nov. 26) and either Pittsburgh or Texas Tech (Tue., Nov. 27) at the Barclays Center. The Cardinal will then host South Dakota State (Sun., Dec. 1) at Maples Pavilion in a regional round contest.

The Stanford Cardinal played the visiting Tigers of Texas Southern University Thursday night at Maples Pavilion. Texas Southern is located in Houston and has about 10,000 undergraduates. The Tigers came into the game with a record of 2 wins against 3 losses and all three losses have been on the road.

Stanford,looking to improve to 4-1 for the season, played a very fast uptempo first half against Texas Southern. The Tigers are led by their 6ft 10 inch center Aaric Murray who is averaging over 20 points per game. The Cardinal took a 51-44 lead at halftime. Anthony Brown led the Cardinal with 15 points

and he had great support from Josh Huestis, Dwight Powell and Aaron Bright. Bright,Powell and Huestis all had 9 points each. The Tigers were led by Murray and Jose Rodriguez. These two accounted for 28 points. Stanford shot 51.4% from the floor with Texas Southern shot just 40%. Rebounds were even at 20 apiece.

In the second half, Stanford’s defense shut down the Tiger offense. Stanford pulled away to lead by 26 points with 8 minutes left in the half. The Tigers’ Aaric Murray and Jose Rodriguez were held to just 8 points total between them up to this point. The Cardinal offense was led by Anthony Brown and the Cardinal had four other players in double figures. Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins pulled all his key players with about five minutes left in the game but TSU could not mount a charge and they lost their fourth straight game. TSU’s Aaric Murray had 28 points in a losing effort and Jose Rodriguez added 24 for the Tigers.

Second game of the Classic will be Monday night against the University of Houston.

Kings send McCallum to Reno Bighorns

The Sacramento Kings made a roster move on Thursday. Rookie guard Ray McCallum has been assigned to the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League. Reno is the Kings exclusive entry in the D-League and is dedicated to developing young talent for Sacramento.

McCallum was the Kings’ second round pick (36th overall) in the 2013 NBA Draft. He had not seen any playing time in the Kings’ 11 games this season. In the preseason, McCallum averaged 3.8 points, 1.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.2 steals and 12.2 minutes of playing time in five games. He did not start in any of those games.

Kings color analyst Jerry Reynolds said on Wednesday’s broadcast from Phoenix that McCallum needed to be playing not sitting on the bench. He will get playing time in Reno.

In Reno, McCallum will be reunited with former Kings training camp players Brandon Heath, DeQuan Jones and Trent Lockett.

The Bighorns open the season on the road in Sioux Falls with back-to-back games this Friday and Saturday.

McGloin to start Sunday’s home tilt against Tennessee

OAKLAND — Matt McGloin will have a chance to add a second win to his career total when he (not Terrelle Pryor), leads the Raiders into battle against the Tennessee Titans Sunday at O.co Coliseum, head coach Dennis Allen said after practice Wednesday.

“This is a production business,” Allen said. “One of the things we’ve tried to create here is an atmosphere of competition. If you go out and you perform and you make plays, you get opportunities to continue to go out and perform and make plays. Matt did that last week. He’s going to get another opportunity this week. We’ll see how it goes.”

There is no question that McGloin earned a second start over Pryor for the Raiders (4-6)with his performance in the Raiders 28-23 victory on the road against the Houston Texans last Sunday, not because Pryor is nursing a Grade 2 sprain of his right MCL. Pryor took snaps with the second team and could serve as McGloin’s backup on Sunday.

McGloin completed 18 of 32 passes for 197 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The undrafted rookie quarterback out of Penn State appeared poised, confident and collected in his first career start and looked to be on the same page with his receivers all day. He also finished with a quarterback rating of 105.9, sending Houston (2-8), to its eighth straight loss of the season.

It didn’t hurt that running back Rashad Jennings had a career-day against the Texans, too.

Jennings finished the game with a career-high 150 yards rushing on 22 carries. His 80-yard touchdown run came out of the Wildcat formation, which is his career-long. Jennings has proven to be the healthy workhorse running back that Oakland has needed this year, with Darren McFadden in and out of the line up this season.

Oakland’s defense continued its strong play against Houston, forcing three fumbles (two by free safety Charles Woodson), two sacks and one interception. Cornerback Mike Jenkins led the team with 10 tackles.

The Tennessee Titans (4-6), are a coming off a 30-27 home loss to their AFC South foe, the Indianapolis Colts.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will make his fourth start of the season for the Titans in place of franchise quarterback, Jake Locker, who is done for the season with a Lisfranc injury.

In three starts this season, the Harvard graduate has thrown for 1,012 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions. Fitzpatrick is a pure pocket passer and can get the ball out quick.

McGloin could have his work cut out for him when he faces Tennessee’s 10th ranked defense, led by cornerback Alterraun Verner.

Verner may not be a household name like Seattle’s Richard Sherman or Tampa’s Darrelle Revis, but is quickly making a name for himself. Verner is tied for the league lead with five interceptions (one returned for a touchdown).

Overall, the Titans’ defense is giving up 22.6 points, 213.1 passing yards, and 117 rushing yards per game.

Even though both teams are entering Sunday’s game with identical 4-6 records, this could be one a very competitive game.

Bulls wrangled in by Thunder, lose 5-1

STOCKTON– The San Francisco Bulls (4-8-1-1) were defeated by the Stockton Thunder (8-4-0-1), 5-1. Rob Linsmayer scored the lone goal for the Bulls in the loss.

Stockton took the lead in the first on two unanswered goals in the first by the Thunders James Henry and Landon Oslanski. The second period saw the Bulls try and attack the net more however their motives were thwarted by goalie Brian Foster who after this win improved his record to 7-0-1. Ryan Constant scored the Thunders third goal at 8:48 and caused the Bulls to remove Tyler Beskorowany from the net and put in J.P. Anderson.

Even with Anderson in net, the Thunder continued their onslaught as Matt Bergland scored at 7:51 and James Henry scored his second of the game with 9:56 left in regulation to put Stockton up 5-0. The Bulls Linsmayer tapped in a goal with a little less than two minutes left in the game to squash the shut out bid and brought the finally tally to 5-1 in favor of the Thunder.

The Bulls return home on Friday to take on the Utah Grizzlies for Ghirardelli Chocolate Night.

BERKELEY–Anytime you have a chance to make history and this year the Cal football Bears have made history, they are among the worst team among the FDS in every category and therefore in the long and storied history of the Big Game which is coming up this Saturday at Stanford they are the biggest underdogs ever. Do you want to know what their in store for?

This will shock you but I would tell you to take Cal and points in this game on Saturday and the only way that Cal could be able to beat the spread with their 32 points and their never going beat the spread and hold the score down and the only way your going to hold the score down is to run the football. Their going to actually concentrate on running the football and Stanford is going to expect them not to run the football.

Their going to concentrate on trying to control the ball on the ground and Cal can’t do that they only have two Pac 12 quality lineman and that’s the problem. These games, these rivalry games can throw everything out the window and they don’t even bother printing these in the racing forms because there is no forms to these games. Remember Joe Kapp’s last game was an 17-11 victory over a Stanford team that was a four touchdown favorite.

Is there any chance for Cal to pull out a miracle and shock the crowd at Stanford with a win answer: I don’t think the band will be on the field.

Cal hoops: Playtime is over the real games start next week in Maui for the Maui Invitational to face some really good teams, the Maui tournament will see Arkansas, Baylor, Cal, Chaminade, Dayton, Gonzaga, Minnesota, and Syracuse, and Cal will find out what a good team really is. This team is doing well going into the tournament they are 4-0 the last time Cal was 4-0 going into a tournament they were riding high and they were fat, dumb, and happy and they went back to Wisconsin and played a Big Ten that just physically manhandled them.

From the time they tried to leave the locker room and until the time they got on the bus to go back home they have not forgotten that and they have brought that and a little bit more focus in the Pac 12. They realize they have a chance to be a really decent team this year. They may not be at the very top pius echelon of the Pac 12 this year looks like Arizona and UCLA are those big teams but Cal is right behind them which means all they need one or two players or wins in winning the league and that’s always been their goal.

Guard Justin Cobbs he was fine the other night after recovering from an injury. The first question we asked Cal head coach Mike Montgomery last Monday night after beating Southern Utah was what did he learn about his team after a game like that? Montgomery was honest he said, “not very much.” Southern Utah was overmatched physically and talent wise from about the time they got off the airplane.

However their coached by a former player at Stanford Nick Robinson suddenly it gave Robinson an opportunity to play a in bigger arena in front of 4,000 to 5,000 people which is more than who their going to play in front of in Utah.

As Curry Sits, Warriors Drop 11th Straight to Memphis in OT

One streak came to an end while another continued on strong in after 88-81 overtime defeat for the Golden State Warriors at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies (7-5) Wednesday night at Oracle Arena. With Stephen Curry sitting due to what is being termed a concussion, the Warriors were handed their first loss in six homes games this season, continuing a string of 11-straight losses to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Klay Thompson dropped a game-high tying 21 points on 9 of 19 shooting, while David Lee added 18 points on 9 field goals in 17 attempts. Andre Iguodala notched 14 assists in Curry’s absence. Zach Randolph scored 21 points to tie Thompson for the game best while pulling down 12 rebounds, most by any side Wednesday night. Marc Gasol also nabbed a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Warriors (8-4) raced out to a 26-16 lead and held a ten-point lead at the midway point for a 44-34 halftime score. Memphis outscored Golden State 25-13 in the third quarter to take a two-point 59-57 lead in to the fourth.

The wild fourth quarter saw the Warriors storm back from an early six-point deficit to chisel away at a 63-57. Thompson capped the comeback with a 3-pointer with 7:20 left to give Golden State the 68-66 lead. From there, the lead would change four more times before the quarter ended in a 75-75 deadlock.

Memphis controlled the overtime session, outscoring the Warriors 13-6. Mike Conley had five points in the extra frame and Tayshaun Prince added a pair of daggers on two contested desperation jump shots that hit their mark.

The Warriors coughed up 14 turnovers to Memphis’ 6. Golden State was limited to only 4 fast break points, struggling without the normal starting point guard against a stout Grizzlies defense.
Another Warrior went down with injury as Ognjen Kuzmic injured his right arm on the backboard during the first quarter. He now joins Toney Douglas, Jermaine O’Neal and Stephen Curry as wounded Warriors.

Golden State travels to Los Angeles to face the Lakers Friday night in a rematch of the opening night 100-95 victory. Tip-off is at 7:30 pm.

Kings beat Suns again, 113-106

The Kings went to Phoenix for the second game of a home-and-home series against the Suns and beat them again, this time by a score of 113-106. The key in this game was to score early and often. In the first frame the two teams tied at 27. In the second Sacramento outscored the home team by a 28-23 margin and in the third tallied 119 points against the Suns’ 12. But in the final period, Phoenix went on a run that had them scoring 44 points to the Kings’ 39, and it was the visitors’ early performance that kept them in the game.

Isaiah Thomas led the Kings with 23 points. DeMarcus Cousins had 19 and a dozen rebounds despite a sore shoulder that developed after he was fouled in the previous night’s game at Oracle Arena in Oakland. Greivis Vasquez scored 13 points and had 6 assists. Goran Drajic led the Suns with 31 points and contributed 5 assists. Miles Plumlee had 7 rebounds.

The Big Game Preview

Stanford California Football

Well folks. It’s time for the Big Game. There are lots of Big Games around the country. On the West Coast, the Big games are UCLA vs USC, Oregon vs Oregon State, Washington vs Washington State but the Big Game that the people of Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area , in particular, are interested in is the 116th renewal of the rivalry between Stanford University and the University of California.

The game will be played at Stanford Stadium on Saturday at 1pm and will be televised on Fox Sports 1.

Stanford, coached by David Shaw, enters the game with a record of 8-2,6-2 Pac-12 and is still smarting from the upset loss last week to USC. That loss may have cost the Cardinal a trip to the Rose Bowl this year. The California Golden Bears are now coached by Sonny Dykes. Dykes is in his first year as coach and his team is having a woeful season with a record of 1-10, 0-9 Pac-12. The Bears have lost nine games in a row and are a 31 ½ point underdog to Stanford.

This game, on paper, looks like an easy win for Stanford. However, records just do not count when Big Games are being played. The Bears will go all out as they have nothing to lose. Stanford, on the other hand, does have a lot to lose as they will not get a top Bowl invitation if they fall to California.

The Bears quarterback, Jared Goff said” No one thinks we have a chance. That’s not what we think inside our team.” That’s a lot of confidence for a young man on a 1-10 team. The Bears can put up points but their defense has been dismal as they showed in a 62-28 loss to USC.

Stanford, on the other hand, is highly motivated since they lost last week 20-17 to USC and Coach Shaw said” Our guys can’t wait to get back on the field.” Stanford does have an outside chance of going back to the Rose Bowl. Oregon will need to be upset by either Arizona or Oregon State and the Cardinal will have to beat Cal and Notre Dame.

Stanford leads the series 58-46 with 11 ties. The first game was played in1892 in San Francisco and the Stanford’s team manager was Herbert Hoover. Stanford has won three in a row and four of the last six games. Lots of strange things can happen in the Big Game. The most memorable came in 1982

when Cal scored the winning touchdown running through the Stanford Marching Band to defeat the Cardinal. Joe Starkey, the voice of the Cal Bears on radio, made one of the greatest calls in the history of college football that day and that call is still played every year to remind people of how unpredictable college football can be and especially in the Big Game.

The winner of the game gets possession of the Stanford Axe. The trophy consists of an axe-head mounted on a large wooden plaque ,along with scores of past Big Games.

The Game will be a sellout and even with the huge point spread, it should be a fun game and Stanford cannot afford to be caught napping and lose this game.

Cal tops Southern Utah, improves to 4-0

Soon after the opening tip on Monday at Haas Pavilion, things went south for the Southern Utah Thunderbirds.

The Cal Bears scored the first six baskets of the game and established an early 14-0 lead.  From there, the Bears cruised to a 75-47 victory to improve to 4-0 on the young season.

“It was 12-0 before we knew it, and we had a hard time coming back from that,” SUU Coach Nick Robinson said.  “We got some good shots, but they weren’t falling for us.”

Robinson was a role player on Cal coach Mike Montgomery’s best and final teams at Stanford, graduating there in 2005.  In a short time since, Robinson has elevated himself to a Division I head coach after several stints as an assistant at various programs.

While Robinson’s rapid ascent is quite impressive, his team’s performance on Monday wasn’t.  The Thunderbirds struggled with the bigger, quicker Bears from the jump.

“We substituted a lot early,” Montgomery said.  “It seemed pretty obvious that they were outmatched.”

“They were flat-out better than we were,” Robinson said.  “(Cal) was more disciplined defensively, they did a great job on the boards, and hit open shots that we weren’t capable of hitting.”

All 13 Bears that suited up got action in the first half on Monday.  And although the frequent substitutions didn’t do much for continuity, it didn’t affect progress on the scoreboard.  The Bears led 33-10 after 15 minutes with the Thunderbirds shooting 22 percent in the first half.

Richard Solomon contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in the win.  Tyrone Wallace had 15, and the trio of Ricky Kreklow, Jordan Mathews and David Kravish had nine each.

A.J. Hess led Southern Utah with 15 points.  The Thunderbirds shot 29 percent for the game and committed 15 turnovers.

Cal sees a jump in competition on Monday when they travel to Maui and open the Invitational against Arkansas.

The New York Yankees Alex Rodriguez feels he’s been targeted unfairly in a way I don’t want to make direct comparison like the Barry Bonds case why? Because he’s a high profile player A-Rod is a name when he was playing even Roger Clemons who got in trouble that transcends sports and most people are not sports fans in this country and you walk in the streets and you ask somebody who is Jonny Gomes? Someone will reply I think I saw him in the World Series.

You say Alex Rodriguez they would say he’s a big star with the Yankees, so here’s the deal baseball wants to crucify him. How much evidence do they have on him? That’s the real question and I don’t think anybody really knows and it might be a game of chicken on whose going to blink first and A-Rod has some of the best attorneys in the world and Major League Baseball has very good attorneys and they have the power with the commissioner which is very powerful with over 30 owners behind him.

So this would be a big battle of epic proportions if this battle goes to court but let me say this and this is just myself, my experience I really believe that MLB and this commissioner wants to get A-Rod out of baseball and with a suspension of the 211 games maybe commissioner Bud Selig thought A-Rod is going to give up but it has backfired he’s not giving up he wants to keep playing and he’s very controversial as we know for all the suspensions for steroids and he’s very talented so Major League Baseball versus Alex Rodriguez right now is 50-50 chance on whose going to win this battle.

Tim Hudson can he stay healthy?: The Giants newly acquired 38 year old Tim Hudson from the Atlanta Braves this week and you never ever heard anything negative and he’s a class act however he’s 38 going on 39 very soon in a few months he’s been hurt a little bit and he’s still recuperating from ankle surgery although he will be in the Giants starting rotation. If he’s healthy and if everything goes right for him it would be a tremendous pick up for the Giants.

When your talking about a pitcher whose 38 or 39 or 40 the same thing happens with A’s pitcher Bartolo Colon he had a great season last year with 18 wins and he’s one of the best pitchers in baseball but he’s going to be 41 in May and the Giants spent a lot of money recently they paid $35 million for pitcher Tim Lincecum, they’re paying Hudson $23 million and there is still a little question mark if this is going to be the Hudson of old.

If he is it would be a very good pick up for the Giants and he would be behind starting pitchers Matt Cain, Madison Baumgarner, and he would be number three right now unless they have Lincecum at number three and the don’t want to sign Ryan Vogelsong to a free agent contract. So the Giants are still looking for maybe another pitcher. Bronson Arroyo could be signed but who knows the Giants could surprise everybody and sign Bartolo Colon.

There’s not too many in free agents in baseball, free agents of value but some stuff is happening as I predicted a couple of weeks after the World Series this stuff develops that the last two weeks in November before and after Thanksgiving day I believe that it’s going to be very busy in baseball and then in December everybody goes home and relax and come back in January and work on the media guides and the schedules are get ready and then your a couple months away from the first pitch.
